Title: Apples And Oranges
Description: Lucy

Kelan Tryst - February 19, 2010 09:25 PM (GMT)
Kelan was sitting in his room, looking out at the walls in a state of complete boredom. Softly, the fifth year whistled o himself, unconsciously calling his pet owl, Chistery, to the window. When the beautiful brown and white owl flew in and perch on the frame of the four-poster bed, Kelan smiled and got up. There were treats for his young bird locked in his trunk somewhere, so the boy went digging in the trunk, jarring his neatness into chaos as he tossed items out.

"Ah ha!" He smiled as he pulled out the treats. Chistery cooed softly as Kelan gave his feathers a good rub. The treats quickly caught the birds attention and as Chistery ate, Kelan thought about his state of boredom. What could he do without having to leave his room?

Then it hit him.
Send a post to a friend.
He knew exactly who he wanted to send it to the moment the idea struck him.

"Hey, Chis, I got a job for you. Can you take a quick post to Lucy for me?" He whispered to the bird. He grabbed a piece of parchment and wrote a quick note.

QUOTE

Hey Lucy,

How've you been? I'm up in my room bored, but not really in a mood for large crowds that frequent all my favorite places, so I figured I'd write. Chistery has a tendency to claw so watch out for those.

I saw you in DADA... who was that guy you got flamed for passing notes with? I've never seen him before. Of course, given how I don't socialize much that only makes sense.

Bored in the Tower,
Kelan Jae

Tapping her quill lightly on her cheeks Lucy couldn’t help but wonder how long she had been staring at her present line of parchment; had she been sitting here for an hour, two, maybe three? Ok so really it was only a few minutes but still with a despairing huff Lucy set her parchment down next to her on her bedside. Curling her feet up Lucy looked around her empty dorm for a little distraction, not to mention a few moments to rest her eyes from her awful homework. Sure she could have been down in the library, common room, or wherever but she felt sitting up in her bed seemed like as good of a place as any to try and get some work done. Not to mention the chance of nodding off for a quick nap in between too.

Just then Lucy heard a soft tapping on the window next to her bed. Curious Lucy turned her head sharply to see a brown and white owl sitting on the windowsill with a letter. Strange, she hadn’t expected anyone to write her – and more importantly that wasn’t her owl either. Getting up Lucy quickly opened the window and snatched the letter from the owl. Smiling to herself, it was like this tower could hear her need for a distraction after all.

Lucy,

Owls are rather viscious birds aren't they? The little blighters are always trying to harm someone. It must be their peculiar fashion of showing affections.

Bored out of my mind is a rare state of being for me. Unfortunately, I happen to be in that state right now.

Ah, DADA not so bad, but you know me, Mr. Curious. McAdams seems a bit rough around the edges, but I think she's just really passionate about her subject... and a tad uptight about it as well.

I wondered if he was a Gryffindor. I couldn't really tell because I didn't look at him much, but that makes a certain amount of sense now.

You know, honestly, I have yet to have a lesson here that I could consider remotely near normal. Of course, I've lived a good chunk of my life in the Muggle world, so all of this is strange to me.

My stupid git of a bird bit me,
Kelan

Lucy,

Owls are really misunderstood birds, I think. It's probably why they are so viscious. They just want us to understand. Muggles have dog whisperers, don't they? Why hasn't anyone attempted to be an owl whisperer?

Well, I suggest that you simply avoid passing notes in that class. (laugh) Alright, I agree, she's uptight. How does anyone deal with an uptight professor though? Get and stay on her good side.

Somehow, I doubt that she is reading our minds right now. That's just obssessive. I think she is only that way in class.

Most of the people back where I come from just find it all strange period. Summer before third year they gave me a single room at the orphanage so the strangeness doesn't effect anyone else.

I just filled the room with books.

Poor Muggles. Just don't understand do they?

Gave the bird a treat, he's happy now,

Kelan

PS

Using the word Muggle is unnaturally natural to me... Hmmm.

Lucy,

I must agree with you there. That is quite a radical concept. People who talk to animals just seem a little off their rockers.

(grin) Who doesn't pass notes in History of Magic? Even I do, and I like the class...sometimes. But, I imagine McAdams is one of those professors who just kinda hates you once they hate you and it'll take ages to change their mind. I feel a bit sorry for you if that's the case. She's kinda scary. (smile)

The books don't bother them as much as the subject matter kind of throws them off. I've got a whole shelf full of books just about the Potter years... and a good chunk of stuff about Voldemort's first war. It's interesting when the nurses come in during their rounds. They all stare at the books that say "DARK LORD Vol (insert number here)" then look at me as though I've lost my mind.

I just laugh at them and wave my wand in a ridiculous fashion.

Ha. Sadly, that's about as rebellious as I get.

Glad Chistery's in a better mood now,

Kelan

Lucy,

Wouldn't that be a concept? A spell that allows you talk to animals? we've got spells that turn you into animals, why not have one that lets you talk to them? Hmmm.... Sounds like fun research.

Too true about the note passing. No one can go through seven years of HOM without at least one moment of insanity.... except maybe the professor.

(laughs at rolled eyes not that you can hear me)

Aw, shucks, don't feel too bad Lucy. I'm sure if you keep the note passing to nil and do grade A work in the class (which we both know you can) you'll be fine.

What's so bad about DADA anyway? It's my favorite among them all... well that and Runes (despite my ability to often suck at it).

Actually, strangely enough, they're all very much aware of magic, although they don't understand it. According to my adoptive parents (the caretakers of the orphanage that is) I'm not the first wizard to have ended up there. Some of the nurses remember other children like me. I've stayed the longest though.

Still, phrases like "DARK LORD" and "BLACK MAGICIANS" or my personal favorite "THE EVILS THAT ALMOST RULED THE WORLD" do tend to frighten even the most hearty person. My copy of "FORBIDDEN MAGICS" mysteriously disappeared.

Guess they didn't like that one too much.

I suppose my taste in books is a little strange, but the whole Potter thing just intrigued me so much I got everything I could on it... Over the years, that's been a good chunk of stuff. It's a really small collection of books though. Only twenty-five I think.

Wishing for more books,
Kelan

Lucy,

Yeah, for all our magical prowess, sorcerers aren't particularly inventive folk. I guess that's something we have in common with Muggles. Quite comfortable with things they way they are. Only an imaginative few like to change things.

If I were an animagus, not that it will be a skill I aim for, but if I were, I'd be an Eagle... They are the most awesome of predator birds. They fly the highest, hunt the best, and are truly the big dogs of the sky.

Honestly, you pretty much have to work twice as hard to get back on any professors good side, if you really think about it. I just suppose twice as hard varies from teach to teach.

I'm a fan of learning, this is true, but there is just something about DADA that I enjoy above them all. I don't really have the wand for it, but somehow it works for me. Transfiguration and Charms are okay by me though. Care of Magical Creatures... well, I love animals really, but not that much. (laugh)

It is quite unusual, which is why I think my birth parents took me there. Somehow, I don't think my being there was pure chance.

That book was a BIOGRAPHY! How was I to know they'd freak out on the title alone? It had a good chunk of info about Grindelwald and Voldemort, as well as other dark wizards and witches. Bellatrix Lestrange had a whole chapter to herself. Thoroughly insane, that one.

Well, I've managed to keep my collection mostly intact by hiding them in drawers I rigged with false bottoms. The books without questionable titles stay out in the open, but the books that are particularly special to me stay hidden.

I got smart after they took that book.

Lucy,

I do not agree with untapped potential. That's like forgetting to try, and people who do not try simply irritate me.

Ah, a patronus.... I've never done one. I don't even know how. You'd think I'd've learned it by now, but.... nope, I guess I missed that lesson. It shames me to say that actually given my love for DADA.

Awww, shucks, Lucy, you've not got to miserable. It's really not all that bad. Or at least try not to let her know you hate it. That'll just make it worse on you. At least, that has been my experience.

DADA professors do have a tendency to make it seem like their class is the only class that's important, but I suppose that's because its the only one that can really help you in an immediate life or death situation. After all, if a werewolf is after you, do you really have time to make and force it to drink a Wolfsbane potion?

The Muggles at the Orphange never ask. To them I fit into one of two extremes: a freak or a cool guy... The majority leans toward the freak.

Hey Lucy, I just had a thought... probably a stupid one, but I'll ask anyway... Do you think you could show me how to do a patronus? I'd be interested to see what mine looks like.

Kelan

(OOC: hey, sorry for the wait, I've been busy with a show at school. And I just thought of that patronus thing as a plot type thing we could do just for fun...)

Lucy,

Most people with potential, that acknowledge it, don't have the brains to use it. It's the people with the brains that don't even try that irritates me.

No, DADA really is a class that is enjoyed totally by preference. It just happens to be mine. But I suppose, since one day I'd like to be an Auror for the Ministry (I know, such a cliche dream) , I have to have some enjoyment of it.

The class I am not looking forward to is Potions. I really don't have the wand for potion stirring, so that class will really challenge my skills.

The place I come from is very curious. Only now do I realize how much.

I'm ready whenever you are. I really want to learn how to do one. I just haven't yet. It would be interesting trying to figure out why it takes the form it does. I mean, everyone's patronus has some sort of emotional connection to them right? It's just intriguing to wonder what mine will be.

It's rather intimidating magic though, even for me.

I'm thanking you in advance for showing me how to do one though.

((Cause I thought going to the RoR would be too cliche! hahaha))

Kelan Tryst - March 13, 2010 10:49 PM (GMT)

Lucy,

You know, I honestly think a lot of people want to be an Auror because it seems to be very adventuresome. Kids like to have big prestigious adventures planned in there future, you know. I think we all want to have our name known when we're dead. I suppose that's why it isn't necessarily cliche to want to be an Auror. I don't care about the prestige and praise... I just want to be able to help people who are defenseless. No one, and I mean no person good or evil, should EVER be taken advantage of.

But that's me on my soap box so I'll get off it now.

Yeah the OWLs do seem like they're going to be pretty tough. I am eager to take them though. Hopefully, I'll get high enough marks to take the NEWT level classes next year, especially in DADA and Potions... Eck, Potions.

Speaking of DADA, how about that paper she wanted us to write? That was an interesting assignment for the first day. Usually its, "read this chapter and be prepared for a pop quiz." or "Try not to hurt yourselves practicing this spell." The essay thing was kinda unusual.

Tomorrow in Classroom 11 sounds good. I'll see you there.

Kelan

PS
Thanks again for helping me, Lucy.
