The chatter of the Great Hall surrounded the young man as he ate his meal; a breakfast full of eggs, bacon and orange juice. Not to mention has browns. They were probably his favorite part of the whole meal. Doused in extra ketchup. The whole thing was had been a part of meals at his father's restaurant as a kid and people had stared in disbelief at him then - which was no different than the way his housemates glanced at him in disbelief now, before turning their noses away. Teenagers were some of the most judgmental people on the planet - JR knew this, but the way he saw it, the world as a whole wasn't much better anyways. People were always looking for flaws and often times, found them in appearances even before they got to know the person they were looking at.

Wasn't that the reason that JR made sure his scars were glamor charmed day and night? With how itchy shirts were, keeping one on all of the time were not going to happen - but at the same time, if he showed the world the cursed lines inked into his skin for the rest of his life, the young man would be subjected to judgement for the rest of his time and Hogwarts and beyond. As someone who endured the pain of the injuries as they were burned into his skin because he looked like the spitting image of his father, JR knew the world was judgmental and harsh; didn't care about the individual behind the pain and suffering.

Which was why the young man valued the few friends he had - Sammy, Kiss, Erik, Helene, even Liam to a certain extent. He was someone who tried to make friends wherever he went - tried to make small changes in the world whenever and wherever he could - wasn't that how he had met Erik in the first place? Now they were bound together by a bloodline JR had never expected and this was hard for him to deal with; at the same time it was also exciting as hell. There was fear of course, but there was also excitement. JR the ship of family had sailed; passed as his brother had died. Maybe there was hope after all.

His fork hit the plate with a soft clang, as JR put it down to pick up his drink and take sips. His piercing green eyes scanned the room as a whole as he swallowed the juice, pausing as he thought he saw her. It was a trick of his eyes, a wish come true from the depths of his heart to see her. He blinked a few times, looking around to see if anyone else had seen the girl at the door of the Great Hall before looking back. His heart sank, even as his shoulder blades relaxed. It hadn't been hurt; he didn't need to get worked up over this. She was a figment of his imagination or else Kiss would be headed towards the Gryffindor table right now.

Yet, she was no longer there and it had only been a memory of her coming into the room that had hit him. The young man sighed softly before picking up his fork, trying to eat again. Except that now, breakfast wasn't quite as appetizing as it had been a few moments ago - what he really wanted was his long time best friend to come back from whatever hiatus she was on. Not that the lion could blame her - he had walked away when hardships came. JR could only hope that whatever was happening in her life, Liam was holding her close and that eventually, the love of his life would come back to his life.

The Great Hall. You wouldn’t think that the thought of it during a meal time would give someone pause as they were getting ready for their day, make them hesitate while they were pulling their hair back from their face or tugging a pair of pants on to their body. You wouldn’t think that it would cause that same person to seriously reevaluate just how hungry they might be and whether or not they could just nip in to the kitchens later, when the elves weren’t so busy and less people were milling about. You wouldn’t think that the thought of the Great Hall would make a small pit form in a person’s stomach because they knew that there were going to be people there that they both longed to reconnect with and still also wanted to keep at arm’s length because it wasn’t the time or place to get in to any details. You might not think all of these things, but all of these things were all that Kiska Ferdenova could think as she looked over herself in the mirror.

A worry line creased her brow but, other than that, the remainder of her appearance was the same as ever. Wild blonde hair tucked into place, light blue eyes that just looked tired, slender frame that was perhaps just a little thinner than usual, nondescript Hogwarts uniform with pants today, instead of the traditional skirt. I don’t feel like wearing a skirt and that is final. For a fleeting moment as she studied her face, there was a flash of something that passed over it – frustration? Anger? She wanted so badly to feel like herself again, having not felt that way for a long time. The days where careless fun out on the lawns or being sprawled out in the library reading a good book or sneaking at night to the kitchens felt like forever ago. Like a different lifetime, almost. It was like looking in to the window of a shop that was closed; she could look in to the window and see what she wanted, but was forever waiting for the shop to open so she could get it.

Blowing out a soft breath, Kiss gave herself the usual nod of ”Well, this is as good as it’s going to get,” and grabbed her robes in one arm and slung her bag over the opposite shoulder. Tucking her necklace in under her shirt and vest, the girl departed her dormitory and common room, moving in a way that could only be described as ‘moseying along’ to the Great Hall. Even before she was near it, she could hear the faint sounds of happy chatter and shouts and they grew louder as her feet carried her closer. Coming down the last of the stairs before the room came in to view, the Gryffindor sort of hovered at the doors while others continued to file in around her. Her eyes were trying to rove both the Ravenclaw and Gryffindor table for specific faces – when they didn’t find the one they were looking for in the blue House, they instead looked to the table for her own.

It took little time before she spotted him. Even from where she stood, the lioness could clearly see the food he had before him, no doubt doused in his favorite condiment. She recalled that the Gryffindor boy really could put food away when he tried; that is, when he remembered to eat in the first place. And he had always been willing to try anything that she had been able to concoct up. There had probably been times when whatever had been concocted was pretty awful, and he had gone right along with it anyways and… Her breath caught in her throat then, stalling her thoughts. Maybe he had sensed her looking at him, Kiska would have no way of knowing. But in that moment, his green eyes looked up and found her blues and the same pull, the same desire to go to him hit her once more. She shifted her weight, a foot poised to take a step before he was blinking around the room as though having seen a mirage, and hesitation immediately stopped her.

Not here, the girl thought, shaking her head as she slipped back out in to the hall. Her heart was racing for a myriad of different reasons, but an idea had started to take shape and was rooting itself firmly in her mind. All it would require was a basket, a note, some baked goods, and what felt like a whole lot of courage for the next time she saw him. There would be a next time.
