These were sleepless nights, and equally sleepy afternoons. The past few days had been a bit if a daze. The noises of the school day seemed dull to the sleep deprived badger. Tori had never been a fan of the cold, the dark eyed girl preferred the hot summer days of Spain, wandering the beach in search of shells and sea glass. These cold dreary days did nothing but leave her feeling drained and aching to get warm. The few hours of sparse sunlight they did have was spent in class, sadly. Winter it seemed was for sulking in the shadows of the season, and for unexpected afternoon naps. The thin girl was still rubbing at her sleepy eyes as she emerged from the dorms. It had been one of those unplanned naps she hated so much, and yet who was she to complain? Sleeping was always a chore, perhaps a few surprise snoozes would help with the dull mood that had come with the short days.

So what did one do when sleep was evasive? Tori liked to wall, and on clear nights the hufflepuff could be found stargazing from the astronomy tower. The stars were predictable, she liked that. It was the walk along the way that had her anxiety rising. Night was a dangerous time where the dark engulfed everything and shadows danced from the corner of one's eye.

The common room seemed quiet, just the crackle of the fireplace. Even so the tall girl paused in the last step, toes hanging precariously over the edge while her weight sunk into her heels. The badger was but a wisp, hiding beneath baggy cloths and a thick blanket wrapped around her shoulders. For a split second the brunette thought she would be on her own. That is until obsidian eyes came to rest on a familiar silhouette. The badger smiled, “Benjamin.” She chimed quietly before closing the distance. Benjamin was a nice boy, and she had come to enjoy his company. Tori had learned through their interactions though that he was a bit reserved when it came to doing just about anything. The hufflepuff reminded her of a puppy, a shy one that needed to be coaxed and gently pushed into things that might seem scary.

Through the dark she could see his face through the flickering flame. Was she predictable? Did the boy already know her plan? She didn't give him the chance to say no, gently grabbing the boy by the wrist and pulling him towards the door. Much like taking a scared puppy for a walk, “walk with me.” It wasn't the walk itself that scared her, just the dark. Having someone come along gave her confidence, drowning any hesitation that might have surfaced moments ago. The former head girl kept a hand on the boys wrist, in case he thought of trying to run and hide. Really, Tori needed him as much as he needed to get out more. “Do you mind if we stop by the astronomy tower, it's such a clear night?” the Spaniard inquired even though they were already in route, it was always polite to ask. If nothing else had stuck with the Isley girl from her upbringing, she at least had manners.

Benjamin did not avoid sleep - and sleep also was not avoiding him. Yet he sat on one of the armchairs close to the fireplace in the common room, struggling through the pages of his Potions book - and several other books about Potions - in order to finish the essay that had been homework for tomorrow. One did not have to ask whether it was going well or not, as there was a concentrated and yet mildly panicked expression on the boy’s rather soft features while he was tapping the pencil he used to write down his thoughts against his cheek in an unsteady rhythm. Pencil was easier to erase than ink, and he knew that he would erase half of what he had written down as soon as he took the time to reread his intro. His fingers ran through his messy curls, gripping onto them for a second before he let go again. There was rarely stress relief in pain, and he quickly resigned to bitten on his thumbnail again.

The badger flinched as someone called his name, almost expecting to be scolded for struggling through homework so shortly before it was due. He was not a procrastinator, he just took longer than most to finish one assignment after another, always lagging a few steps behind while he was following others. His blue gaze wandered towards the girl who was standing there, a small and timid smile tugging on the corner of his mouth as he recognised Victoria Isley. She had not always been with them, had transferred for reasons Benjamin did not know and never desired to ask her for, but she had always been nice to him - and that made him trust her, just like a puppy trusted whoever was petting it regularly.

Before he came even as far as to greet her, the delicate girl had wrapped her fingers around his wrist and gently dragged him along, leaving him no other chance than to abandon his unfinished homework and obediently follow her, a slightly questioning expression on his face. Walk with me. Maybe Tori just did not like being alone in the dark, so he merely shrugged and smiled, trying not to think too much about the fact she was holding onto his wrist like that - almost as if she was keeping him from running away. It was not the feeling of being kept in place that made his cheeks turn to a soft shade of red, but the implied intimacy that reminded him of holding hands with someone. Not that he ever held hands with someone apart from holding onto Rosalie when they were still children.

Not that he had ever thought of holding someone else’s hand than Rosalie’s, either. But Benny was also used to being dragged to places, never protesting and rarely questioning other people’s purposes. He simply trusted in them not to do him any harm, and so his head shot up as Victoria asked whether a stop at the Astronomy tower was okay for him. Slowly, Benny nodded. “Are we watching the stars?” he asked, rather redundantly. What else were they supposed to do at the Astronomy tower, anyway?

The night sky was full of unwritten tales of tragedy, it was always occurring all around them. It just wasn’t as noticeable when such things were happening lightyears away. As rebellious as the Isley girl was, the brunette had never been hard to please. Tori was a girl that enjoyed the simple things, a childhood full of stargazing by night and combing the beaches for seashells during the day. It was easy to get lost when thoughts of a simpler time scurried to the front of her busy mind. Long days walking the beach and finding colorful little shells had been followed by nights of pointing out clusters of stars to her brother - or anyone who would sit with her-- until the sleepy girl would fall asleep. The curtains near her bed were always open, allowing the soft cosmic glow to be her nightlight. As the years had passed it had become obvious that the girl’s interest in stars would not be just a phase, as her interest and knowledge simply grew. As it would turn out, stars in an essence symbolized balance, and balance was something that had grown scarce in the Spaniard's life this past year. Now, more than ever she was clinging to the comfort of her childhood.

Out of the corner of her eye the badger could see the soft glow that touched the boy’s cheeks. The poor thing was blushing, and Tori didn’t even know what she had done to elicit such a response. Were they going to watch the stars? Smiling gently Victoria nodded as her obsidian gaze fell on the older boy. “I’ve always liked to stargaze, ever since I was little.” Tori chirped quietly into the night, “sometimes such things as stars and the galaxies, no matter the distance, are easier to relate to than people.” It was true, and the girl was even a bit envious of the nightly companions. Stars were born and died based on a principle of balance, pressure exerted onto certain elements would force the atoms to fuse their nuclei and thus a star was born. Such beauty could come from pressure, and yet without balance between inward and outward pressure the star would self-destruct and die. If so many stars in the sky, in the galaxy could keep balance why could she not? It was a question that the girl had spent hours inwardly debating, dissecting even as she pulled apart facts until nothing made sense anymore.

The blanket had begun to slip from her slender shoulders, causing the girl to drop Benjamin’s wrist as she pulled the soft, fuzzy blanket back up. Luckily, the timid puppy like Benji didn’t dart off the moment she let go of him. Tori had to wonder if the boy perhaps secretly liked getting out and doing things, even if it took someone dragging him along. “I also collect seashells,” the girl added before gently nudging Benji with an elbow. “What about you? What does Benji like to do for fun?” It was a sincere question, what made Benji Flourish tick? Did he like long walks on the beach with champagne, or fetching tennis balls by moonlight? Who knew, and the only way to find out was to ask, or to start throwing tennis balls to see if he would fetch.

When thinking of the stars, Benjamin’s thoughts darted towards the glow in the dark stars that had been sticking to his walls when he was a little boy, until his mother had found out they were keeping him from sleeping instead of lulling him into a land full of dreams. The stars made him think of the picture books full of the stories of the constellations, the tales of Orion the Hunter and the Cassiopeia, of the Dragon in the sky and the Pegasus. He had always enjoyed being read to, the stories engraved in these constellations the only thing that kept him paying attention to Astronomy. Did Victoria love these stories too, or was she more interested in the scientific side of the stars, in theories of black holes and supernovas, dying stars and comets? Benny did not know, and he also did not pause to ask any of these questions. If the girl wanted to talk, she would start speaking sooner or later - they always did.

Benny had been right, almost surprised as Tori started talking beside him, and he turned his head to look at her, a quiet smile on his lips. He remembered summer nights lying on his back in their garden, a gentle breeze brushing through the stems of grass around him, and the constellations so clear and close that it had always felt like he only had to reach out to pick one up. If he could have picked a single star from the night sky, Benjamin knew exactly who he would have given it too, wrapped in crisp paper and decorated with a satin bow around it. But picking stars from the sky only ever worked in books and movies, unless they fell from the sky all by themselves to reveal their true natures of being beautiful, glowing girls - just like in Stardust.

But the boy was drifting off, only returning to the here and now when the warmth and pressure around his wrist was done. He gazed down, for a moment feeling a little lost, as if he had lost the anchor that kept him tied to the reality of the moment, but then he just let his arm hang down, gazing at Tori who was adjusting her blanket again. How wise of her, to bring a blanket along after all. Then he gazed around, only to make sure they were walking in the right direction, as the way to the Astronomy tower was a long one, past ancient armors and talking portraits which made him almost as uncomfortable as house elves did - almost, because the portraits were still just drawn people, not real enough to cause any harm.

Benji. Only Tori called him like that, and he liked it, as it was different from the nicknames he was usually given. But the question she had asked was harder, almost too hard to answer. What did he like to do? He sometimes played Quidditch, but he did not exactly like it. Benny liked reading poetry, but that was nothing he wanted to talk about. “I like sleeping,” he replied hesitantly, almost voiced as a question too while he was staring at his shoes. Compared to stargazing and collecting sea shells, that sounded even more boring and terrible.

I like sleeping. The boy didn’t seem entirely sure of his answer, those shy puppy dog eyes were on his shoes and Tori couldn’t help but to smile. Benji’s answer had planted the image of a shaggy dog lounging in front of a crackling fire in her mind. It was a nice image, the tall girl thought maybe lounging in front of the fire would be nice. It would have been warm, and maybe even a bit peaceful in a way. Sometimes it felt like she would never be warm again, like winter had caused all the warmth in the world to fade away. But Benji had warm eyes and a soft soul, and if that didn’t give someone hope, well Tori didn’t know if they’d ever find it. It gave the tall Spaniard hope; hope that someday the ice in her bones would melt away and allow spring to bloom once again. It could happen, perhaps it didn’t always feel that way but the badger kept reminding herself that even through the darkest of nights the sun would still rise in the morning.

“Aww, well I’m glad you have something you enjoy.” The badger cooed, a bony hand gently patting the Benji on the head as if she was dealing with an oversized puppy instead of a shy hufflepuff. Puppies and the house of Hufflepuff seemed to go hand in hand, or at least that was what Tori had observed so far. Walking through the common room was like daring to venture through the pet store, puppies of all shapes and sizes. Some fluffy and cute while others were boisterous and busy wrestling over a shredded teddy bear. If Benji was all fluff and no bark what type of puppy would she had been? Something with long legs and a loud mouth, perhaps some sort of hound dog such as a greyhound or a whippet. Tori didn’t think a ballerina's body translated well into the canine world, it didn’t even always translate well in the girl’s own world. Too more room for imperfections, like blemishes on fine china, it suddenly becomes worthless.

The ballerina thought that maybe she was the same height as the boy beside her. For a split second the girl pursed her lips, obsidian eyes flicking to the top of Benji’s head as she wordlessly calculated. That hair is deceptive, the badger thought, it was hard to tell who was the taller one out of them. It might not have been, but the girl was going to call this one a tie. Sometimes Tori found herself quietly considering everyone as a potential dance partner, and Benji was no different. It didn’t matter that the thought of the boy pirouetting down the halls was ridiculous, and Tori would have placed a bet that voicing such an idea would have made the sixth year blush. Again. Benjamin Flourish did not have the presence of a dancer, no instead the boy seemed to sink into the wallpaper with hushed ambiance. Even so, it was something Tori liked about him, that no matter what the hufflepuff would always be the quintessence of placidity. With a quiet smile Tori linked arms with the curly haired boy, gently pulling him into the direction of the astronomy tower. Thoughts of a fictional Benjamin Flourish dancing through the halls of hogwarts had the Hufflepuff silently smirking to herself. Who knew, maybe that was why the boy was always seemed so tired.

From his bedroom at home in Monmouth, he could see the stars, as he enjoyed sleeping with the shutters open wide. The bright daylight in the mornings did not bother him, as it seemed like Benjamin Flourish could sleep no matter under which circumstances. He liked falling asleep with the imprints of the stars still visible when he closed his eyes, tracing them in his mind like other people might be counting sheep. Benny had a harder time imagining sheep than he had thinking of the constellations up high, those very constellations Tori and he were about to gaze it. The familiarity of the situation made him willing to tag along, and her guidance was the kind of reassurance the boy was yearning for - Victoria Isley was someone who wanted him around, who enjoyed his company enough to lead him all the way from the Hufflepuff common room to the Astronomy tower. How late was it? Where they breaking curfew already? Benny did not mind enough to ask her, as his voice would only ruin in the peace of the moment.

When she reached out to pet his head, Benjamin’s eyes widened a little, but he did not protest. Instead, he offered the girl a timid smile. Being with Tori was never exhausting - she was nice and calm, almost soft - yet in a way, she felt odd to him, almost like a china doll with the tiniest flaw on its porcelain face. It was like something was going on with Victoria, yet Benny did not have the guts to ask her for it. He assumed that if someone wanted to share a secret with him, they would do so in one way or another, without him ever prodding them. She had enough motivation for the two of them, while all Benny had to do was being there. He was complimenting other people more with just being around instead of shining himself, and it was the kind of life he enjoyed the most.

Their linked arms felt soothing and familiar too, and they climbed the stairs up to the Astronomy tower. It was almost irritating how quiet the area was, with not even cats straying around. Maybe they were cold, just like Marbles preferred staying in Benny’s bed during winter rather than chasing around the castle. Whenever he left, he just ended in Rosalie’s dorm instead anyway, so the badger never had to worry about his cat. He was the one to push the door open when they reached the top of the tower, a gentle but cool breeze greeting them, while starlight fell through the windows and made the stone ground appear like a lake of liquid silver.

The sensation of the floor feeling solid still almost surprised Benjamin as he walked forward, still more following Victoria than offering any enthusiasm himself. “Shall we sit by the window?” he asked quietly, wondering whether it would be too cold - but then his blue gaze fell on the blanket his friend had brought along, and all the small worries were wiped away as if she had taken the hem of it to clean his mind off all those thoughts. He gazed to the windows again, amazed by the clear winter sky. Yes, letting Tori take him here had been a beautiful idea.
