Thanatos Helstrom knew that the incident had not been an accident; someone purposefully pushed him off the banister of the grand staircase as he was walking back to his common room after Charms class. He was in the midst of making his descent down the stairs when he felt a pair of hands on his back shove him roughly until he fell over the edge and plummeted towards the floor. Fortunately, while the boy was absolutely inept at flying with a broomstick, he was not so hapless that he could not soften the fall with a well-timed spell to transfigure one of the portraits into a sofa to cushion his fall. Considering how the boy still had fallen from one floor above, it meant that an injury was almost inevitable. He was left with a sore left arm, which was a pity because that was his wand arm. He was absolutely pitiful when it came to writing or doing wandwork with his right hand.

It was one of the rare times Thanatos was caught off-guard. He supposed it was bound to happen if he was in a large group of people. It would be difficult to pinpoint the culprit; Thanatos did not have reflexes fast enough to soften the fall and locate the culprit. He had to choose one or the other and it was clear that he’d prefer avoiding more damage than was necessary. There were only a selected handful of people that he suspected had caused the incident, one being his stepsister. With his stepsister, it was apparent that the Slytherin was focused on furthering her own gains, but Thanatos never pegged her as someone evil enough to be able to push her own kin off the stairs. No, he surmised that it must have been someone else who had bad blood with him. During his sixth years at Hogwarts, Thanatos was careful about provoking other people. His adoption into the Helstrom family taught him that people could be very scary when it came to matters concerning money.

Even when a crowd gathered around the dark-haired boy, he shrugged off their concerns and darted away. He avoided staying in large groups of people; the attention did not suit someone like him, who was more than happy to watch in the sidelines. He supposed that a visit to the Hospital Wing was definitely needed unless he wanted to walk around with an injured arm the rest of the day. He kept his eyes trained on the people around him this time. He wasn’t going to get injured again so quickly. His sneakers dragged heavily against the carpet as he began to feel more pain from his swollen arm. Already, he could see the beginnings of a bruise. Black and red spread across his elbow. He sighed, glad that Dr. Viktor and Lord Vader were safe in his backpack.

As he saw the faint outlines of the Hospital Wing, he felt relief that he wouldn’t have to walk with an injured arm for longer now. As he was about to walk inside, he paused. If he remembered correctly, the Deveaux girl (or was it Devaeux-Carroll, he couldn’t recall) was currently training there as an intern. The Deveaux family were yet another wealthy and traditional almost pureblood family. Rumors always spread in high society; even if the Deveaux girl did not realize it, her background story was a popular topic in some of the social circles. Part of it was because she was in the “family of heroes.” She was halfblood, born from a pureblood witch and a Muggle man. Her mother passed away, leaving her and her brother in the care of the Muggle man. Thanatos found something inherently sad about her lack of a mother figure, but maybe it was because he never knew his birth parents growing up. While he had never talked to the girl personally, he noticed her during the formal events. Even if she did not have the love of her mother, Thanatos could tell that she was very much loved by her grandfather and the pale boy he later found out was her younger cousin, Elias Deveaux.

Thanatos had been instructed by his stepparents (his benefactor and technically his grandfather said nothing) to befriend the Deveaux girl. She was a valuable connection. His stepparents also hinted that he might try to capture the fair lady’s heart, for if a marriage was formed, the Helstrom family would be linked to the family of heroes. At those words, Thanatos could only smile and laugh. His family was ever the amusing bunch and too eager to exchange an innocent girl’s happiness for their own personal gains. He supposed it was only a matter of time that his family would stop using him in favor of his stepbrother to court the Deveaux girl. He wondered why they hadn’t already; it wasn’t as if Thanatos was the favored son; he had been adopted. The Helstroms were constantly finding ways to kick him out of the family. He figured it was another plan to get him kicked out, as usual. Maybe they planned on telling the girl that he only chased after her for monetary gains.

Still in his thoughts, he pushed past the entrance and strolled into the Hospital Wing. His arm was beginning to hurt even more, so he did not want to wait too long.

“Hello, is anyone around?” he asked, feeling exposed without his dolls that he used to talk to people. He was an excellent ventriloquist, but with his left arm in such a state, he was unable to hold his plushies.

The silence of the empty Hospital Wing had been droning on in Tori's ears for the past hour. It wasn't exactly an uncomfortable silence, yet she winced at every sound she made, turning to the door to the matron's office to see if she had disturbed anyone. She knew she just needed to relax, acclimatize herself to the place and then she'd be fine. Still, her giddiness at just being here amplified her nervousness at messing up badly enough that she'd be sent out and so she strove to keep every noise as quiet as possible, not even talking to herself as she set about her tasks.

She sat at a desk in the corner, carefully removing bottles and jars from cabinets and taking their inventory. The quill scratching against her parchment as she wrote sounded as a roar in her ears every time she started a new line. The small clink as she placed an item back in its proper spot was like a cymbal crashing to the young hufflepuff. Certainly she was the only one who heard the noises as such, anyone who came in probably would only hear the faintest of sounds from her corner, yet she strove to place each jar back as softly as possible.

So involved in her task and consumed by her fears of being too loud, she didn't even notice the door open. That was hardly a surprise however, since the hinges were oiled by her earlier and no longer squeaked. The girl had just dipped her quill into an ink pot when someone called out to the mostly-empty room and she jumped, her hand toppling the glass jar over and allowing ink to flow across the desk.

"Oh!" She gave a startled gasp and quickly righted the ink pot before more of its contents could be freed. "Oh no, stop that," she chastised the ink quietly as she snatched her paper from the desk before it could be soiled further. On top of a small cabinet to her right was a tidy stack of clean washcloths and her hand wavered in the air before grabbing one and placing it on the spill. It would be fine to use one, right? The ink would wash out the same as anything else, so it wouldn't be a big deal, yes? She carefully set her list down next to the rest of the washcloths and finally turned her attention to the new arrival.

Tori was rather surprised to see the Helstrom boy standing there, his voice completely unfamiliar to her. Though they were in the same year and had at least known of each other for a few years prior thanks to family events, she had never actually heard him speak. Oh, she certainly had witnessed his ventriloquist act and she'd heard the voices he used for his dolls, but they sounded very little like how he actually did. Though she had never once made an attempt to actually talk to him, perhaps she would have known that if she did.

'Stay away from the Helstroms, Victoria. They're a purist family and will only cause you pain,' her grandfather had reminded her before every social event where a Helstrom was bound to appear. She had feared what her grandfather would do if she disobeyed that rule, especially as he was usually so open, so she had always obeyed. Even at Hogwarts she never made any attempt to befriend this boy (and to be fair the puppet thing really did wonders to keep people away). Yet now he was here, in the Hospital Wing, meaning he clearly needed some help, and it was her job to help. In fact, she had been practically bouncing at the idea of someone coming in for help just this morning.

"Hi, sorry about that. Can I help you at all?" She put on her best smile, moving up from behind the desk and pulling a chair out from against the wall so he could sit down. Honestly, the ravenclaw had never struck her as a bad person, yet she still felt a chill at just the thought of the rest of his family. She had seen his siblings both inside Hogwarts and out and with them she felt she understood why her grandfather was so strict when it came to interacting with the Helstroms. She pulled her hoodie close across her chest as if keeping the cold at bay, yet the room was hardly what one would consider cold with large windows allowing the warmth of the afternoon sun to come in and soak into the stone.

The Helstrom boy was familiar with the smell of Muggle hospitals, but he couldn’t remember the first time he had been introduced to the scent. In the earliest memory he could recall, he was simply known as a kodomo no nanashi, an orphan without a name. As far as he could remember, he had been living on the streets of Tokyo by himself. If he had Muggle parents, then maybe the first time he was introduced to the strong sterile smell and white dull lights of hospitals was when he was born. He imagined his mother would have been taken to a hospital when she knew it was time.

If his parents weren’t Muggle, then maybe the first time he went into a hospital was when he inadvertently used magic in a match against his sensei. At the time, the boy did not know what magic was; he was just trying to best his mentor, but that was when things spiraled out of control. A simple wave of his sword had sent the man straight into the wall. Blood colored his sensei’s chest. The next few seconds had been the longest; it felt like an eternity before the boy saw his sensei’s chest heave and the boy knew his sensei was still alive. Sometimes, he wondered if that was the reason why he failed at Defense Against the Dark Arts despite many hours of practice. It was karma.

Or maybe, it was when he first met Erebus Helstrom on that fateful winter night, when the boy had been starving and desperate enough to rob the first man he saw. Instead, he saw a dying man who was severely injured. Despite the burn in his stomach and the blisters on his feet, the boy carried the man all the way from the Tower of London to the nearest hospital.

A soft exclamation followed by the sound of spilled ink momentarily broke Thanatos out of his reverie. He caught sight of a petite girl sitting at the counter, frantically trying to rid her parchment of what looked to be like an excessive amount of black ink. He wondered if his words had startled her. That had not been his attempt. He opened his mouth to speak before his eyes caught sight of her light auburn hair and her freckled face. Even if he had never exchanged a single word with the girl in his entire time at Hogwarts, he recognized Victoria Deveaux-Carroll. He took a step back involuntarily, placing his right hand protectively over his stomach.

Despite his family’s plans for the Deveaux girl, he had no intentions of joining in on their tomfoolery. His conviction was stronger with the girl so close to him. He was close enough to see the small curls in her hair--her hair was as frizzy as he imagined after observing her a couple of times at formal events. Tori was a real girl. Surely, his family could not expect him to harm her. He turned his dark eyes to the ground, preferring the sight of white tiles to another human face. There were drops of red on the porcelain tiles. His injured arm felt strangely wet. When he wrapped his fingers around his left arm, he noticed there was fresh blood and some dried blood that caked around his elbow. Thanatos mused that someone would have to clean that up. It was probably her because it looked like she was the only person on duty.

“I tripped and fell over the banister of the Grand Staircase and onto my left arm,” said Thanatos, his voice rich and vibrant. The ability to morph and manipulate his voice stemmed from having a strong voice in the first place. He was staring the bear-shaped hood of her jacket. Thanatos didn’t know what he was expecting, but he wasn’t expecting this. Bear-shaped hoodie, bear-themed flats, and even a bear-shaped necklace. It felt like the Deveaux family were constantly attending fencing and dueling competitions. He figured someone as good as fighting as the Deveaux girl would wear something more...menacing. She reminded him a soft teddy bear plush.

“Sorry, I got blood on the floor, but once I can use my wand again, I’ll clean it up,” said Thanatos, finally showing her his bruised and apparently bloodied arm. “Are you able to fix it?”

A brow quirked and a skeptical look crossed the redhead's face. "You fell over the banister? How did you manage that?" The words were barely out of her mouth when she realized she should probably not have said them. "I'm sorry, you don't have to answer that," she sheepishly tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and looked down at her feet. She wondered briefly if she was the only one able to feel how heavy the air in the room had become. Was it because she was alone with Thanatos Helstrom, against ever wish of her grandfather, or was it because because she had never learned to think before speaking?

His words gave her a welcome distraction from herself and she looked back up at him with a smile. "Don't worry about the floor, it's no big deal." He really couldn't be as awful as her grandfather feared if he was worrying about having to clean up, could he? That thought comforted her a bit. She pushed her sleeves up and went over to the sink, washing her hands in the warm water as she called over her shoulder for him to sit down in the chair she had placed by the desk. Tori moved haltingly, glancing around almost as though she did not know what she was looking for before her eyes found a small basin. She grabbed it and shoved it under the the flowing water. It felt awkward, needing to think about what she wanted to do, the movements she had imagined herself performing smoothly and without flaw since childhood being new to her body.

The tap squeaked as she turned the faucet off but she didn't wince at the noise this time. It felt safer to make noise now, probably because someone else was here and they had made noise first. "As long as it isn't broken I should be able to help," she assured him as she grabbed another clean washcloth and pressed it down to the bottom of the water-filled basin. With care to not spill too much of the water she lifted the brass container up out of the sink. She took slow steps over to the desk to set it down on a clean section close enough to the dark-haired boy that she could access it as she worked.

The badger took longer than she probably needed to in pulling over and positioning her own chair, trying to figure where she could sit to have ample light without needing to stretch too much to get the washcloth and without being too close to the ravenclaw. This really wasn't how her daydreams had gone at all. Feeling more awkward than ever and just a tad impatient with herself she finally settled on a spot and sat down.

She hesitated again, once more her perfect vision of the future being shattered. Should she just take his arm to check it over or ask for it? Would it be weird to ask? She chewed on her lip as she desperately tried to remember how her childhood doctor's bedside manner had been but she had so rarely seen the man that it was to no avail. She was taking too long again. "Do-do you mind?" She nervously motioned at his arm, her cheeks turning a light pink. She would definitely have to get better at this. She would rather it be before any other classmates needed assistance but she had a nagging feeling that it would only improve with practice.

He supposed Victoria asked a reasonable question. If Thanatos wanted to make it seem as if he had fallen down due to his own mistake, he would probably need to weave a much better story. From the suspicious looks the Deveaux was giving him, he didn’t think the excuse “I tripped over the carpet” would cut it. Unfortunately, he didn’t think he could make up an elaborate story on the spot without sounding like a blabbering fool without the aid of his two puppets. Sometimes, he wondered if people laughed at him for still playing with dolls at his age, but it rarely crossed his mind because despite his shyness, he couldn’t care less about what most people thought of him. Still, he couldn’t help but feel nervous at lying to the girl in front of him considering he needed her help in healing his arm. Instead of an explanation, he returned her look of skepticism with a sheepish smile. Fingers gripped onto the left sleeve of his sweater gingerly to avoid further agitating his wound.

The initial fall was painless. At the time, the Ravenclaw had been too caught up with saving his own life to worry about something as insignificant as pain. There was also the crowd of people who surrounded him in concern after the incident. He had just wanted to get away from the prying eyes and hushed whispers. Now that he was safe, his senses were returning to him with a vengeance. The dull pain in his left arm had evolved into a throbbing pain. A part of his sweater was soaked in what he assumed was his own blood. All it took to confirm was the smear of red on his fingers. Suddenly, Thanatos was glad he had at least thought to transfigure the painting into a sofa because otherwise, it might have been his head suffering the same damage.

When Victoria reassured the boy that the bloody marks on the floor was okay, he nodded hesitantly. Secretly, he wondered if she was used to people walking in with bloody injuries. It looked like she was operating on some kind of hospital protocol as she washed her hands in the sink. He suddenly felt foolish for mentioning the blood.

But her words were gentle and lulled him into a near doze. Either that or it was the loss of blood that was causing his light-headedness. He was reminded of warm afternoons spent in Tokyo. If he was back in Japan, he might have been eating lunch with his sensei and playing games afterward. Lazy eyes watched the water flow out of the faucet. The sound of running water relaxed him more than any other sound in the room. Aware that he was staring impolitely, he turned his gaze to the floor. “Um thanks. I’ll still clean it up later.”

Broken. That was a scary word, as he had no clue as to whether or not the bones in his arm were shattered. There wasn’t any horrifying crunch when he landed but he wasn’t qualified to make such a claim. It was the Deveaux girl’s responsibility to decide whether or not his arm was broken. It didn’t help that he found her uncomfortable. It wasn’t her fault. It was how she acted compared to her family. Thanatos expected a more commanding presence than what she was presenting at the moment. When a Deveaux entered the room, it was very apparent. Thanatos could still remember the first time Auhert Deveaux made his way into the hall of the Acheron manor. The man was merely walking, but his composure called to Thanatos’ attention and he could not look away.

It was apparent with the way she fumbled with the spilled ink and the tap on the faucet that she was different from her grandfather. He would have offered to help her carry the water basin over, but he didn’t think he would be of much use with his arm in such a state. When she took a seat at the table, he followed suit. He had to admit he was curious. He was used to having his wounds heal over time. He only went to the Hospital Wing this time because it was the most reasonable action to take.

When it was apparent that the girl was just as awkward as Thanatos, he held out his left arm just enough for her to have access to it. It still hurt just to move it, but he dealt with it. There were worse things in life than pain. She looked nervous and he wondered if it was because of the rumors spread by his stepsiblings. This was the one time his stepsiblings’ rumors would help because as long as she remained suspicious, the plan would fail miserably. Not that he planned on going through with it. “Not at all, Miss Deveaux.”

He watched the shadow of a tree from the outside dance on the floor tiles before he realized he needed to call her by her full name. “Miss Deveaux-Carroll.” He hoped she wouldn’t be offended by his mistake.

It was only seconds before he realized he made yet another blunder. “Pardon my manners. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Thanatos Helstrom.”

She wanted to insist that he really didn't need to worry about the blood, but he did seem adamant on cleaning it up later so the hufflepuff dropped the subject. She did, however, note that the Helstrom heir looked increasingly nervous at the thought of his arm being broken and she gave him a gentle smile. "Don't worry. If it's broken I'll get someone who can heal it," she assured him in a soft voice, hoping to soothe his worry. She knew the spell needed to fix a broken bone, but she had never tested it on a live person before. Even in practice she only managed to perform it correctly six out of ten times. It was over half, but still not at a percentage that she was comfortable enough to try it out on the eagle.

Tori took his arm in her right hand, using her left to push his sleeve farther up and away from the injury. There was certainly a lot of blood, but the cut itself didn't seem to be too bad. Already it was bruised and she was positive that if she pressed her fingers against the skin there would be some swelling. She reached out to test the theory, then paused as she remembered her need for bedside manner. "This is probably going to hurt a bit," she warned him, looking up into his face briefly before focusing back on her work.

She could remember doing something similar to Elias after one of his fencing practice sessions when they were children. He had twisted his ankle but toughed it out in front of their grandfather and later she had to convince him to let her look at it. It had only been a minor sprain but it was the first time she had actually gotten a chance to play at being healer. Her fingers moved in much the same way as that day, pressing gently against the skin to check for swelling or abnormal bumps. There was a difference though in that this time she knew what to feel for.

She hadn't even noticed the name by which he called her until he corrected himself. She found herself blinking in surprise and looking up at him again. He was already watching floor though and she smiled to herself and focused back on her work. But again he surprised her and she let out a small giggle as he introduced himself. "I'm Tori, but I suspect you already knew that." Just as she had already known his name before he said it. "It is a pleasure to meet you though, Thanatos." They had never formally met, for knowing each other for years. But she was really starting to believe that he wasn't nearly as awful as her family insisted. That wasn't to say she wouldn't be wary about being around the other Helstroms, just that this particular one seemed alright.

The red-head wasn't sure if he even really was a Helstrom. He had sort of appeared one day among the others at some event, being introduced as such. But he looked nothing like the rest of his family and they seemed rather put-out by his being there. She knew the rumors that he was the heir to the Helstrom estate though, but had not paid attention to any others besides that. Her grandfather would know for certain but just the thought of asking him would be trouble as he'd want to know what prompted the question. Perhaps Eli knew? He would be safe enough to ask. Or even Anora Chevalier.

"Can you hold your arm out like this?" She let go of him as she asked and held her left arm straight out in front of her with her palm down. "Then go ahead and make a fist, and release it," she opened and closed her hand in demonstration. Once he had done that she moved on to the next step. "Alright, now open your hand and rotate your arm so you palm is facing up, close your hand again and bring your fist up to your shoulder." She demonstrated again, going slow enough that he could follow her movements.

“Right. I’ll take your word for it,” said Thanatos, in response to her reassurance that his arm would be fixed. He found his particular set of words polite and most importantly, safe.

Up until this moment, the thought never occurred to him that he couldn't risk angering the Deveaux girl. Word would get out somehow. The wall had ears. He wouldn’t be safe even in the confines of the Hospital Wing. His stepsiblings would find out and report back to his stepparents. While Thanatos was accustomed to disappointing his stepparents (otherwise, he’d have been kicked out a long time ago), he was aware that provoking someone as important as a Deveaux would have its consequences in high society.

Thanatos grew up as an orphan without the lessons in etiquette and decorum that Victoria would have been subjected to as a child, but it didn’t make him any less capable or aware. Despite how harmless Victoria presented herself, Thanatos was not naive to the typical personalities that cultivated in a hostile environment often found in rich, pureblood families. He saw it first-hand in his stepsiblings, who grew up scheming and believing that everything in the world was theirs to take. It didn’t mean that he wanted her to turn out into the typical spoiled heiress. If he could have it, he’d preferred if everyone simply got along.

He tensed up when he felt her fingers on his injured arm, telling himself that she was there to help. He needed to trust her. When she told him it might hurt, he merely smiled and nodded in acknowledgment. Pain was nothing that he couldn’t swallow. Back at his sensei’s dojo, there was even a time when he sliced through his thumb in his haste to sheath his sword. That had been a bloody incident that resulted in a really swollen and painful thumb for the entire month. The scar was sitting on his thumb still; it was a thin straight line that cut across. Looking at his bruised and bloodied arm, he supposed this wasn’t too far off. He wondered if it would scar similarly.

“Tori is short for Victoria, right? I wasn’t sure whether to call you by your first name or last. I grew up in a place where honorifics are important.” It was only after he said the words that he realized it might seem as if he was insinuating she was rude for calling him by his first name without his permission. He smiled to show that he was not offended. “I don’t mind being called Thanatos or anything else for that matter. You can call me whatever you like.” He was aware of how fast he was speaking, barely leaving space between each word. Thanatos wondered if the girl thought he was an awkward person, which wouldn’t be an unfair assessment but not the impression he wanted to give. His eyes wandered to his backpack, where his two dolls were. It was troublesome to talk without them.

He briefly wondered if it would be okay to take out a book to read during the examination. While Tori’s presence was inviting, he preferred to have something else to stare at other than his bloody arm or her face. Eye contact was difficult, no matter how much he practiced in the mirror. However, he decided against it when the Hufflepuff instructed him to follow a series of steps that had to do with moving his injured arm around in certain positions. Thanatos was able to make a fist just fine with his left arm. The hardest part came with bringing his fist up to the height of his shoulder. It took him longer than he would have liked and it hurt a bunch, but he managed it in the end.

He watched the shadow of the trees from the outside again before his gaze inevitably settled on the drops of blood drying on the tiles of the Hospital Wing.

Was it her imagination or had the ravenclaw's reaction to her change? It seemed like his short words were trying to be more polite, as if he was uncertain of her intent. It must be her imagination, because that's exactly what was going through her mind. Had he known she would be on duty today? Was this some ploy devised by his family to gain some inkling at the darker secrets of the Deveaux family? Not that she was privy to those secrets. She could discover them if she wished, but she did not wish to know.

While the Deveauxs were her family and she did love them, she did not feel a true part of their family. The rules, the classes, the appearances she had to make, their easy influence. It was all too much for her. She would be much happier as a Carroll, simply the daughter of an author and literature professor. The Carrolls weren't a big name. Nobody expected anything from a Carroll. Any bearing the name of Deveaux, however, had to be a gryffindor, had to be a duelist, and had to be involved in law-keeping in some way. She was none of those things, and would be quite content to keep it that way. Yet that was still expected of a Deveaux and people still looked to her to be a skilled duelist with aspirations of being an auror, and that made her uneasy with herself.

Her desire to please her family was at odds with her desire to be herself. In her actions and her words, she convinced others that she was going to become a healer; and yet every time her grandfather gave her that disappointed look when she failed in her dueling lessons, she felt guilty for her dreams and wished she could change her heart in order to please him. In order to live up to the wishes that everyone had for her.

But this, inspecting an injury and helping to make people feel better, this made her happy. She was comfortable in this room smelling of disinfectant and soap. People who came in here needed her in a way nobody would ever need her as an auror. In a way that was different from how her father and her cousin needed her. And she could actually help, she could fix their problem with only a little practice.

Victoria. That was something only her family called her. "It is, most everyone calls me Tori though." Her mother had called her Tori, her father still called her Tori, and at times even her brother called her by the nickname. That was her name. Victoria had probably only been chosen to give credence to the name Tori. As far as she could remember her parents had never called her by her first name, only ever by Tori. The young hufflepuff truly did prefer the name Tori. She would never protest, though. The name Victoria would leave someone's mouth and at most she would give a small frown and crinkle her nose.

Another smile as his rushed words. Perhaps he was simply nervous. He really was injured, so this was probably not some unhanded Helstrom scheme her grandfather consistently warned her of. Her eyes watched his arm as he moved it, noting the spots where he seemed to be struggling. "Good news, your arm doesn't seem to be broken." She let her words sink in before continuing. "From the bruising and swelling I'd say you tore a ligament. I can heal that up when I heal the cut, but I'll have to clean it first to make sure nothing's in the wound."

She pulled the washcloth out of the bowl, ringing the excess water from it before gently beginning to wash the blood from his arm. It would have been so much easier if he had hurt his right arm. Tori was left-handed herself and it felt like she was trying to work across at least one of the two of them no matter where she placed herself.

The silence was also starting to bother her. It wasn't the relaxed silence of two friends who had no need to fill the space with noise but were content to just enjoy one another's company and it wasn't the professional silence of a doctor treating their patient. She didn't have enough experience for it to be the latter. It was a heavy silence that was getting heavier and her nerves were beginning to jump again. It needed to be broken, one of them needed to say something and before she had fully considered the need to talk, the words were already out of her mouth.

"You have a very lovely voice, you know. I was surprised when you spoke earlier."

Tori,” said the dark-haired boy with a perfect Japanese accent, “generally means bird in Japanese. However, depending on how you write it, it might mean ‘in the heart.’ Either way, you have a beautiful name, and I'm sure you have some other meaning associated with it.” The words flowed out of the Ravenclaw’s mouth confidently. Despite his tendency to stumble with the most mundane of sentences on a daily basis, it was clear that Thanatos was comfortable with explanations that did not involve himself. The smell of disinfectants wafted through his nostrils. He noticed Tori’s little movements, the way she carefully maneuvered herself to avoid getting in his way while still trying to clean his wound. She was gentle, he noted, much gentler than his sensei who would forget that he was handling a wound sometimes. To make her task harder, it looked like she was also left-handed. Not wanting to make her life anymore difficult, Thanatos tried to stay as humanly possible. He didn’t know where to look, so he settled on his left arm this time. Dark red blood smeared across his elbow. How exactly did he walk around for so long without realizing his arm was bleeding?

The silence was not uncomfortable for him. There were days in which he did not get to speak to anyone at all, so he treated this moment the same as the other times. Besides, considering he was definitely not going through with his family's plans, there was no ulterior motive (for now) to consider. He didn't have to act too friendly. Thanatos genuinely wanted his arm healed, even if it meant having to sit silently in a chair while he held his arm out awkwardly to allow the healer to clean away the dried blood. He was watching the sky outside the window, now, when Tori suddenly spoke up. His eyes flew over to the fidgety girl. He blinked.

Was she nervous?

In his discomfort, it seemed that he neglected to notice Tori’s discomfort. That wouldn’t do. His sensei would be appalled at his selfishness. Ignoring the pain in his left arm momentarily, he leaned down to unzip his backpack and reached inside to retrieve one of the two dolls. Dr. Viktor showed up in his right hand. Black button eyes stared back at Thanatos, as if questioning him why it was only now that Thanatos decided to take him out. It was only his imagination because he knew his dolls weren’t real, even if he never admitted it to other people outloud. When she complimented his voice, he nodded in recognition but otherwise did not say anything in response. Normally, he would have ignored most compliments in favor of keeping quiet either way. It was an old habit that he could not quite throw away.

He plopped Dr. Viktor on the table until he was right next to Tori. “Sometimes, I animate my dolls with a spell. I didn’t do it today, so my dolls won’t be able to talk unless I talk for them. Except, it’s difficult when my left arm is bleeding.” He poked lightly at Dr. Viktor’s button eyes, a thoughtful expression on his face. Forming sentences were hard. He wished there was a way to show someone his thoughts instead. After a moment, he said, “Everything has a voice and a soul.”

He referred to the beliefs he was taught in Japan about animism. “...Back in the orphanage I stayed at, whenever I had time, I made dolls for the other kids. I suppose it reminds me of home.”

Thanatos didn’t say thank you for her compliments, but he told her a little bit about himself instead.

Tori was simply short for Victoria, a name meaning 'victory,' or so her grandfather had told her. It was probably pulled from some distant relative for how sweetly it rolled off the tongue, there was the possibility it was some sort of symbol of what the Deveauxs were; a family of fighters who always won (she doubted that was what her parents had chosen the name for). Being a bird sounded more agreeable. Rust always seemed fairly happy and she was a bird. She had also gotten a letter from someone the other week who seemed more interested in being a bird than a person. Perhaps she should consider it as well.

If she was a bird she wouldn't have to worry about living up to expectations. She wouldn't have to worry about what Eli thought of her or what gossip her aunt spread about her. She could simply just exist and nobody would care one way or the other. Not that she believed they truly cared about her, but as a bird they wouldn't expect anything from her nor would they try to find faults within the 16-year old.

She blushed at her careless words and turned away from Thanatos, rinsing the washcloth in the basin and wringing it out again. When she turned back he had grabbed one of his dolls and placed it on the table next to her. She glanced at the doll before turning back to her work.

Orphanage. So he really wasn't part of the Helstrom family, at least not truly. He did bear their name however, and he was raised among their children. There could be no guarantee that he wasn't exactly like what her family said, but what was a family anyway? Just a collection of people who bore your name and shared your genes. It didn't mean that they liked one another or cared for each other, and while she knew her family cared for her, it didn't mean they were always right.

"Wands have souls. I don't see why anything else couldn't have a soul." She dropped the now-bloody washcloth into the basin, watching the red swirl around and dye the water for a few seconds. She really didn't expect there to be anything in the wound, but it was always best to be sure, she reminded herself as she inspected his cut. Satisfied she removed her wand from the holster on her hip. "Episkey," she pointed the tip at the cut and watched the flesh mend together.

"That should take care of the cut as well as any torn ligaments." She stood again and grabbed a clean washcloth, a small jar and some bandages. "The bruise will heal best with this salve," she set the jar on the table as she took her seat again. "You'll want to leave it on for two hours, if the bruise is still there afterwards feel from to come back and we'll reapply it for you." She gently dabbed at his arm with the washcloth to dry it before opening the jar. The smell of lavender mixed from comfrey wafted into the air and she dipped her fingers into it. The light heat from the cayenne peppers was noticeable at once and she smoothed the salve over the bruise before wiping her fingers off on the washcloth. "You should be able to use it now, but try not to agitate it too much until it's fully healed." The redhead wrapped the bandaged twice around his arm, just to keep the salve from rubbing off onto his clothing or anything else, before announcing him complete.
