It was an overcast afternoon, much to Arabella’s disappointment. She longed for the sunshine after such a harsh winter, as a chill had settled in her classroom that she couldn’t stamp out. She found herself once again thanking whatever deity was in charge of classroom assignment. Lord help her if Ghoul Studies had been held in the dungeons instead of the third floor.

Despite a less-than-sunshiny start, Arabella was looking forward to spring classes. Spring was the season of rebirth and growth, and she was determined to make that so. For herself and her students, if she had to.

Kathy, the possessed porcelain doll that Arabella brought to class every day, sat in her usual spot on the desk. A sign next to her read: ‘Please don’t touch me! If I can look with my eyes, so can you!’ Another sign on the other side of the desk read ‘Bee Happy’—a gift from Arabella’s grandmother.

She hummed to herself as she wrote instructions on the blackboard in large, flowing script:

‘Good afternoon and welcome to Ghoul Studies! Please seat yourselves wherever you desire and we will begin class momentarily!’

The door to the classroom creaked open, and Arabella turned to greet the first student to arrive with a large grin.

“Hello there! As the board says, seat yourself where you’ll be most comfortable, and we’ll get started once everyone else arrives and gets settled.”

---
Hello everyone! And welcome to spring term ghoul studies! Please summarize your posts at the end here and if you’d like your student to be late for whatever reason, please wait until I’ve replied with Arabella at least once. (I'll give it a week and a half before doing so.) Thanks for signing up, and I look forward to seeing you all here!

Choosing to partake in Ghoul Studies had been another spur of the moment decision that Kiska had made at once and thought more deeply about later. Truth be told, the concept of ghosts and other beings was one that was alarming to her – and yes, even though she was part of the wizarding world and was very much aware that ghosts and the like existed. You just couldn’t quite grow out of childhood habits, especially when it came to being frightened of something. Oh, and also pranks that older siblings would like to play on the younger ones to make them cry and seek out their mother in the middle of the night. And four older sisters meant the pranks could get imaginative and enhanced with magic that a little kid didn’t understand. Hard to forget moments like that.

But maybe this class would help to put the little-kid fears to bed, finally. Sure, Kiss had encountered the ghosts around the castle – how could you not? – but she hadn’t ever actually interacted with one. Sort of just edged around them in the corridors. Maybe learning more about them and how some still lingered in their world would do her some good?

Slipping in to the classroom on time, Kiska offered the cheerily-dressed professor a smile as she entered, moving to one of the middle rows of seats. She wasn’t exactly a front-row kind of girl unless it was in Care of Magical Creatures, and yet didn’t quite like sitting all the way in the back, either. The middle was a good spot to sort of remain inconspicuous and while still being able to see what may be happening up front. Books and scraps of parchment for note-taking weren’t sprawled out across a desk space meant for two, as they had been carelessly done in Ancient Runes just recently. A nod to her uncanny ability to dwell on past and inconsequential situations, Kiss had kept the belongings she tugged out of her bag to one side of the desk so another student could take a seat if they so desired. Or maybe nobody would want to. It wasn’t like the girl was a reliable source for answers on this subject.

Making a face at herself, the Gryffindor directed her attention towards the front of the room and her gaze again traveled briefly over their professor before near immediately dropping to the doll on her desk.

Great. She had signed up to take part in a horror movie.

Kiss is a scaredy cat when it comes to supernatural type related things, okay? She’s pretty sure that doll is planning some method of death just for fun, but probably she’s just overreacting.

Kit had been fairly liberal when it came to signing up for extra curricular classes. Being in his third year meant he could sign up for them, and Ghoul Studies had seemed so terrifyingly interesting that he'd had to take it. Plus the added bonus of the classroom being on the third floor.

It was a good day for the little lion boy. His OCD had fallen on the back burner for the time being, and his compulsions had fallen to a whisper instead of the usual deafening roar. Winter break had been awful, but it was always hard around the holidays. But spring had been stride after stride for Kit. He hadn't gotten stuck on the stairs once, and he'd been early or right on time to all his classes. Ghoul Studies was no different, as Kit walked through the doors at nine minutes till.

The classroom was empty, save for Kiska, Kit's housemate. She was older than him--in her final year, if his memory was correct. The third year rarely socialized above his year unless they were siblings of his friends, or friends of his siblings. But Kiska was a familiar face, and the French boy worried that she might be the only other Gryffindor there.

Kit plopped himself down beside her. His mind whispered at him that he was in the "Wrong Seat", but he placed his book bag on his desk and gave the older girl a small smile.

"Hello, Kiska," he said in a quiet voice. He didn't want to disturb the atmosphere. He'd save that for someone more boisterous. "Have you taken this class before?"

------

Kit is in a good mood and pays little mind to the decorations in the classroom. Instead he sits down next to @Kiska Ferdenova.

The doll was a lot harder to ignore than one might have initially thought. Or maybe it was just difficult for Kiska to ignore because it seemed rather out of place in the rest of the room. It certainly looked innocuous enough, but there was that sense of otherness about it that drew unexplained attention. And, being that this was a Ghoul Studies class, it wasn’t exactly a stretch to think that there was something wrong with it. The girl’s brow furrowed a little as she studied the object, realizing that she was putting a lot of thought in to something that did still have the potential to be absolutely nothing. Maybe it was meant to unnerve first years in to behaving until they were a bit more experienced. Yet here it was, unsettling a seventh year instead. Where was some of that Gryffindor bravery?

Her gaze lifted away from the doll as a boy seated himself next to her. A smile automatically spread on Kiska’s features by way of a welcome while she pondered on his name. His face was a familiar one from their common room… Christopher, maybe? That sounded right. Almost. He was a year, or perhaps a few years, behind her, wasn’t he? Well they didn’t share a year so he would have to be younger than she was... Glancing back up towards the front at his question before back to her new companion, Kiss shook her head and also kept her voice lower. “Not a single class in my life. And the jury’s out on whether it was a good idea to start now. Have you ever taken it and can you tell me if the doll has ever cursed someone?”

Kiss is still obsessing about the doll because she doesn’t have anything better to do. She does start to chat with @Christophe Devereaux, though, trying to remember his name properly before actually using it.
