Aisling shifted nervously on her feet as she stood outside Jacian Turner's office, hugging her notebook to her chest. She was hoping this session wouldn't last too long, as she'd been given a lot of homework, and having this session would only restrict her reading time further. Did she really want to do this? She knew she had to. She'd gone six years without getting help, and soon she wouldn't be able to afford going on any longer. But she was still stressed, and she was pretty sure getting counselling sessions would only add to her stress, which would make her more anxious, which would add to her depression, and add to her stress. It was a vicious circle.
And then there were her parents. What if they found out? She knew exactly what they'd say.
'Trying to get help? Pathetic. You're a filthy half-blood. Beyond any help.'
Aisling shook her head and dug her fingernails into the palm of her left hand, drawing a little blood.
"I know it's a vicious circle, but if you're ever going to escape from the circle then you have to get help, and right now this is all the help you're going to get." The voice in her head told her. It was funny, the small voice was probably her best friend. It reminded her of Evie.
She let out a deep sigh and reached up with her left hand, gently knocking on the door.

It was almost difficult to hear the knock at his door - the former Gryffindor might not have if he had been listening to his turntable - however, he had been expecting his next student and sat quietly going over other notes he'd made so far that day. Jacian hadn't seen any files or reports yet on this Aisling Howard, and didn't recognize the name, so this would be a session literally starting from scratch and so he was braced for anything. The timid knock was his very first hint of the student's personality and almost on reflex he relaxed his demeanor with practiced ease. Standing from his chair he walked to the door and opened it gently. What greeted him was an older student, very short blonde hair, her notebook hugged to her chest, weight shifted a bit awkwardly, anxiety was plain to see.

"Aisling, I'm guessin'?" he greeted, his voice calm and even his Scottish brogue was softened. He gave a smile and stepped back, motioning for her to enter as he didn't think there would be another student just happening to show up at the same time. There was a faint crackle from the woodstove about halfway down on the left-hand wall, on the right was a desk scattered with papers and books - some open and some closed - as well as an empty tea cup. The wall that held the door was lined with three bookshelves and one chair, the latter directly left as one entered. Between the corner shelf and the stove was a small side table with a tray of tea things and a stack of small wooden crates propping up his record player. In front and to the side of the woodstove, respectively, was a leather settee and armchair. There was an old looking bicycle leaning against the far wall beside a coat stand and the folding panels that separated his personal space from his office were pulled completely shut. The air in the room held the distinct scent of black tea and bergamot that meant earl gray, to those who knew their teas, mixing with the much fainter scent of wood smoke.

Jacian himself was on the shorter end of average for an adult male, a waistcoat hanging loose over a collared shirt matched with jeans that looked a bit worn. The ginger facial hair at his chin was well-trimmed contrasting his plain brown hair that was a bit shaggy and unkempt, what was most noticeable, however, were the bright blue eyes that shared the pleasant smile at his lips. "Feel free to have a seat, m' name's Jacian, it's nice t' meet you."

Before Jacian had opened the door, Aisling had been on the verge of turning around and walking away. She wasn't one hundred per cent sure she wanted to share her problems with a Professor she'd never met.
What if he didn't get it?
What if he judged her?
What if he was like her dad?
The questions thundered through her brain, and she had to resist the urge to not scratch up her hand, as her left palm was already a bit bloody.
She relaxed a bit, though, when the Professor greeted her. He was only a couple of inches taller than she was, and his voice was soft, indicating he wasn't loud and boisterous. She let out a deep breath.
"Y-Yeah." She whispered, running a hand through her hair. "I-I'm Aisling. Th-Thanks...th-thanks for seeing me." She murmured with her slight Irish accent.
She stepped inside the office and looked around, her light brown eyes scanning the room from behind her glasses. It reminded her of her own bedroom back at home. Modest and austere. It felt quite comfortable. She moved over to the sofa, shrugged off her bag and slowly sat down rigidly.

First thing he noted with her speech was that she was either just extremely anxious or given particularly the hang up on the beginning "th" sounds, that she had a stutter - which very well could be solely due to anxiety. Closing the door lightly, he stepped to his desk and collected his teacup, while she took in the sight of the room - not that his office was terribly impressive. Then as she settled a bit stiffly to a seat on the couch he moved to the tray of tea things. "You dinnae happen to fancy earl grey?" he asked, as he refilled his own cup, with her affirmation he flipped one of the cups on the tray and filled it as well, carrying them both as he walk over, handing Aisling hers before he took a seat in the armchair to the side of the settee.

"Ay, so, ye dinnea 'ave to be nervous - though that's easier said 'an done I ken." He took a moment, bringing his teacup to his lips, to blow over the surface of his tea before taking a drink. The pot kept the tea just cooler than too hot to drink, the last he wanted was to have his students burn their tongues. The scent of the tea was refresh in the air of the room as it had faded some he'd poured his last cup and he found it relaxing. He'd thought of having some herbal sorts before however they weren't quite as universally liked than the staple black teas, and while he wanted the students to relax he didn't want them to outright fall asleep when they usually still had a day of classes - those herbal teas always made him sleepy.

"Did ye have a specific reason for wantin' to come talk 'te me or should we jist start with the basics?" Other than what he had observed he really had nothing to go on and it was usually best not to try guessing. If she didn't have specifics for seeing him he'd likely be driving the conversation and building the information about the girl layer by layer. It was always easier when the student just started talking, getting current matters off their chest, as that usually meant he only had to direct the subject on occasion but mostly let things run forward naturally.

Aisling set her notebook down next to her and held the cup under her nose, breathing in the aroma of the Earl Grey tea. It was by far her favourite drink, beating coffee. It made her relax even more that it was something that she had in common with Professor Turner. The warm air from the tea caused the lenses of her glasses to steam up. She took a long sip of the tea, then wiped the lenses with her sleeve.

"I th-think we sheould j-just start with th-the b-b-b-..." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "B-basics." She murmured.

Aisling really had no idea where to start. So much stuff was swimming through her head. There was the situation at home with her dad and step-mum. There was the death of her step-sister. Her childhood in the slums of Dublin. The death of her mum. Her sexuality which she kept a closely-guarded secret.

"Yeah." She nodded quickly, snapping back to reality. "The b-basics."

Jacian waited for the girl to answer, sitting back in the chair, but not slouching. So immediately, he guessed that there was likely a lot going on or had happened in her past, if she was seeing him but couldn't pin point any list of topics. Normally, the former lion would have been taking notes during their conversation, however, with how anxious Aisling was, he thought it might not help her feel more comfortable - who really likes knowing that things that they're saying are being written down to be studied? So, for this session, as he expected there would be more if his instincts were right, he would simply sit listen and direct the topic as needed. The stutter itself could probably be helped with some speech therapy work - which, honestly, he wasn't too knowledgeable about - but maybe helping with some with her anxieties might also help it at least to a mild degree. She didn't bring that up as a main topic though, so it wasn't as likely that her speech was her main concern, so for now he wouldn't bring that up. Though he did make a mental note to see if there was anyone in Hogwarts that was more knowledgeable on the subject.

"Alright, then, basics it is," he replied with a calm smile, before he took another drink of tea. "So, I'd bae guessin' since ye came to see me that somethin' is bothering you, that ye may 'er may not be able to put yer finger on. How are you feeling generally - eating, sleeping, are ye about to focus on yer school work?" It was easy to focus on day to day things, if someone wasn't able to bring themselves to eat or sleep, that certainly was easier to admit than any possible causes. And usually once the student started talking, it was easier to move into more complicated subjects.
