How could anyone stay inside while the sun was painting the lawns in the brightest colours, and flower petals were raining down on the students’ heads like snow in April? Njord had been itching to leave the castle ever since he had woken up, yet it had been too late to take a walk as classes had started early - and he was dutiful enough not to miss his morning classes because he wanted to give in to his low desires of enjoying nature’s call. That would have to wait til later when he was finally allowed to change out of his robes and slip into lighter clothes again. Njord had never deemed the temperatures of Scotland as too daunting, as he was used to colder winds and longer winters in Narvik, where the wind often felt like a knife slicing through his face and yet like a soft caress at the same time. There were days when he missed it, missed home as they had traded it for something less magnificent in the end. But there had never been a moment in his life when he had questioned the decision his parents had made before he had even started to attend Hogwarts, well aware he would have ended up in Durmstrang instead, where Herleif had learned all those things he was so proud of.

Wrong pride was a reoccurring theme in the Nilsson and Vikernes families, and the Norwegian had long since stopped trying to change anything about it. Instead, he focused on the things he truly loved - the way the sun was painting images of light onto the grass and how the trees threw shadows on the lawns. His path was guiding him through the castle, but it seemed like fate did not want him to feel the warm breeze on his face today, instead just drawing him into a different direction - the communal common room, for a change. It was brightly illuminated with sunlight as well, as no one had bothered to draw the curtains close. The fireplace had not been used for a while now, ashes scattered inside and no fresh wood placed beside it to be thrown in non-existent flames. Njord’s sunlight-filled gaze wandered around, and it was almost like the rays of sunlight with dust dancing in them were guiding him straight to the disgruntled and yet familiar face of Archibald Munn.

It was still somewhat of a mystery how they had become friends - but it was a fact that they were friends and that Njord’s constant mission was to charm a smile on the snake’s disgruntled and grumpy features. How could one always look like one’s cat had just died? Deep inside, the Norwegian understood - yet he did not wish to think about all these things that were hidden somewhere in the back of his mind as well, of weights of heritage that made shoulders slump and heads bow down. This was the fate so many pureblood children shared, and some simply handled it better than others - Archibald was handling it rather badly, if the tenseness of his shoulders was any indication. Without touching him, Njord could see how tense his friend was, and it made him sigh a little before he approached, announcing his arrival with a softly hummed “Hello, Archibald.”

Then it was only a matter of seconds before he stood behind the snake, hands resting on the boy’s shoulders and gently pressing down. There was knowledge running through his veins that he did not know where it was coming from - but Njord was going to use it like a gods-given gift, much like the dreams that had been haunting him lately und much like he accepted everything life was offering him. He squeezed those tense muscles, humming a quiet “Relax” without stopping what he was currently doing.

’Relax’ was most definitely a word which did not belong in the vocabulary of Archibald Munn. He understood it’s literal meaning, he understood the concept, yet the boy had never believed in such a thing as relaxing. Oh no, that was for slackers, for the good-for-nothings and for the loafers, for those who brought shame upon their families and made people shake their heads in disappointment. People like Archie, for he would never ever dare even consider indulging to such selfish desires. Did he sometimes feel like throwing everything out the window and spend the rest of the day napping? Yes, of course he did, yet he would never dare admit it, as the only short moments of rest he ever allowed himself were those drinking precious tea or spent at the greenhouses.

It had always been that way, and it would continue to be despite anyone’s saying, for since the moment of his birth he had been handed responsibilities, tasks, and expectations that felt like heavy chains wrapped around his chest and constantly attempting to suffocate life out of him. Another of the things he would never admit, as to the world Archibald was perfect - always so neat, always so calm, always standing with pride and acting unaffected. Too bad not all people were as easily fooled as others, tongue clicking as he heard his name being hummed, grip on the book he was holding tightening as his gray eyes turned to stare at the familiar sight of Njord Vikernes, much alike the looming clouds of a storm. He had planned on reading for one of his classes, but he should have known better than to be able to do such thing at the Communal Common Room.

Truth be told, he did not mind it, faint smile curving his lips and softening his expression for mere seconds. “Njord. You could just call me Archie, as everyone does” the snake commented, tone soft and somehow emotionless, the whisper of a cold breeze. There were few he called his friends, few he respected and few with whom he enjoyed conversing. How he had become friends with Njord was almost a mystery, though he did appreciate it, as the presence of the Norwegian often came as somewhat soothing and it almost made Archie forget about all his worries for those short moments. The name, however, did not, as being called Archibald often only served as reminder of all that which was expected from him, of the burden that came with carrying the name of his family’s founder. Yet those were things he would most definitely not explain to the badger.

The next set of actions stunned him, watching Njord until the boy was no longer in his line of sight, body instantly tensing up at the touch, a quiet squeak leaving him in surprise as his cheeks were momentarily reddened by a gentle blush. Personal space had always been valued by the snake, recoiling at anyone’s touch, and he would have moved away at that moment too… but he didn’t, as even he could agree there was enjoyment to a good backrub. Not like he had ever received one before anyways, though that one did certainly feel heavenly. Lips pressed together, gaze wandering over the room for a second, as if looking for something to distract him. Soon, it found the fireplace, watching the scattered ashes as sunlight danced on them, as if the most delightful of analogies. Not like Archibald Munn would ever compare himself to something as filthy as ashes.

"Thank you." he muttered, somehow short of breath and quiet.

There was something about shortening names that took the grace out of them, as if cutting down the syllables changed the value of a name - which was odd, as Njord was not the strongest believer in the values of names in the first place. He knew they carried meaning - it mattered to be the son of Ulrikke Nilsson, it mattered to be a Vikernes. At the same time it blemished him with a past, a present and a future his conscience could barely deal with, and in the end, names were a curse more than a blessing. Eventually he only disliked nicknames because his own name left little room for shortenings, as well as his brother's. Yet as considerate as Njord was, he slowly nodded at his friend's remark, tentatively echoing "Archie" to taste these two syllables on his tongue like freshly picked cranberries, like lemonade he prepared with his own two hands rather than trusting - or bothering - the house elves with it. "I will remember," the tall Norwegian added with a soft smile, hoping he would indeed remember not to call the other boy by his full name in the future. Patterns and habits were often harder to abandon than the badger would like to admit.

It was not all there was about Archibald Munn that differed him from others, and Njord knew. He had noticed from the start, but he also related to the burden of a name and a fate placed on someone's shoulders. He himself might be the second son, the replacement in case Herleif was going to fall from grace - yet no one had considered that he could be the one who turned out all wrong, who made questionable decisions that did not harm anyone and yet spited everything his name stood for: the heritage, the traditions, the profession. It was all tossed aside by those small rebellions of not eating products coming from animals, from saving rather than slaying creatures - up to a point where he had been the one to safe the mermaid his father and brother had caught from the basement of the Vikernes mansion. If anyone knew, he would be disowned by now - but it was a well-kept secret only Gretchen and him knew, and he would take it to the grave if he had to.

The squeak - quiet, yet noticable - drew the tall young man out of his thoughts, sunlight-filled, warm eyes meeting the back of Archibald's head with a brow furrowed in barely suppressed confusion. He had not been aware the snake could even produce such sounds, yet the change of breathing patterns and the way the muscles seemed to smoothen and somehow relax under his hands were enough of a motivation to continue the unannounced and unexpected service. Njord wanted his friends to feel good and comfortable, more than he wished comfort for himself. But sometimes his actions derailed a little in the way they came promptly, acting instead of bothering with long explanations. There was no one to witness the short and well executed display of innocent affection, so Njord was not affected at all while his eyes wandered towards the window, treetops in the wind visible from where he stood, dancing and losing leaves in the process.

Thank you. A small smile appeared on Njord's lips as he kept massaging the other's stiff shoulders and neck, hands barely touching skin and rather resting on the fabric of Archie's dark t-shirt - guarding what little privacy there was to such touches, although he was aware both in the muggle and the wizaring world, men and women offered massages for money, in the most sterile and clinical way possible. This was not it - it was not intimate either, yet the careful affection between two friends. He did not give backrubs to everyone. Without pausing, Njord finally picked up the thread of conversation to fill the silence before it became too awkward to bear. "What were you trying to do before I interrupted?"

If there was something Archibald Munn had understood from a very young age, that was exactly the power of a name. His family had never been the kind of pureblood lineage that was feared, that people spoke about in soft whispers over the protective crackling of a fireplace. Still, they were most certainly respected, as their members had held positions of importance in the Ministry of Magic for generations and not a single bad thing could be said about the Munn family. They were well liked, esteemed, and over the years the boy had grown all too used to the compliments people had to give regarding his mother’s duty in the Wizengamot or his father’s work as an Auror, both of them being well known, specially the latter. He had always been proud of it, as he had never been given a reason not to, and pride in their family was something taught to every Munn from the very day of their birth.

This was why it was all so overwhelming, why he tried so hard, because with all of his father’s accomplishments and achievements, much more was expected from Archie. Honor the ones who came before you and do better in order to please them. Such was the nature of being a Munn, specially the heir, fated to have a thousand eyes constantly judging his every move -eyes of the past and of the present too. He could make no mistakes, no wrong turns, for his sister had already stained the memory of their generation and he had the duty of fixing such a tragic mistake. People likely didn’t know, as it had all been covered and hidden, much alike most of the problems in his family, yet it still mattered to him, because he knew, and no one could ever take that knowledge away from him.

There was no such thing as trying too hard, no such thing as overachieving, because all Archie really wanted was to please his father after all that had happened, to work as hard as he did for the Munn name and to bring good things upon it. And so, he studied, he got good grades, he never got into any trouble, and he did everything in order to succeed at that school, no matter how much time it took or how much stress. All because he loved the Munn family, all because he idolized his father and wanted to be like the man someday. But things never seemed to come as natural for him as they did for his father, and in a world where he struggled with every stepped he took moving forward, he truly appreciated those friends who were there for him and somehow helped him deal with the burden. That was why he smiled at the nickname, as it felt so much more personal and true than the name which belonged to the founder of his family, that which reminded him of all the things he was supposed to be yet was far from ever becoming.

The gentle blush still covered his cheeks as Njord continued to give him a backrub, eyes closing for a second as he enjoyed the sensation. Somehow, he knew they were similar despite dealing with things so differently, and he knew that the badger understood even when no explanations had been given. It almost made him feel ashamed of being so easy to read, wondering if he was weak for so easily being stressed and overwhelmed by all of it. Sometimes, it really felt like it, his confidence shattered into pieces and being left for him to slowly pick it up and glue it back together as he had done more than once over those years. “Hmm? Read. I found quite a great book on Tasseography for future reference on my last visit to the library.” Archie answered, honest and truthful, as he had no reason to lie about such matters. Then, a brow was quirked for a mere second.

“How about you? As much as I do appreciate this, I doubt you came all the way here looking for me.”

There was a time when Njord had wanted to make his parents proud, to live up to the two family names resting on his shoulder just the way his brother Herleif did. But then, everything had changed. He had started to question the doings of his family, the heritage that had been placed upon him and the future that was lying ahead - he would not be given a chance, as the only way through all of this was to adjust to the laws and orders that only counted in the circle of the family. The young man was still keeping the name unblemished, even though his portraits had been banned into the basement and his opinion barely counted when stated at the dinner table, gazes getting exchanged as soon as he entered a room. The way he chose to live and all his decisions had been twisted into something that was allowed to be mocked and ridiculed - and it made the Norwegian enjoy his time at Hogwarts more than his days spent at a home that was never quite as much of a home as Narvik had been.

Moments like this were when he felt at peace, a deep and all-consuming tranquility that spread like a fever in his body - yet it was the kind of fever that healed and cleaned, not the one that killed. Watching Archibald’s reactions was pleasant, and Njord was attentive enough to consider stopping the small exchange of affections as soon as the snake would get uncomfortable - as Gods could choose whether they wanted to give or take their gifts away again. The blush came as a surprise, something he had not expected - and for Archie’s sake, he chose to ignore it and simply continued, a true believer that skin contact could do wonders, that it healed and cleaned just as well as a fever or pure fire did. The boy was like butter melting in the sun under the badger’s hands, and he had to admit that he was not used to such reactions when he touched someone. Not that many were in his favours to receive backrubs, as even hugs were often limited to Sunwoo, one of his dorm mates. He had not been raised with too much affection, and yet he had observed and watched those around him, picking up their habits when they appeared to be enjoyable.

Hugs and gentle touches on an arm were always comforting, showing without a word that one cared about the other - and even this backrub just showed that Njord cared for his friend, that he wanted him to relax instead of slowly breaking underneath the burden that came with carrying such a prestigious and well-known name, one that could not be tainted and needed to be held up. It was what connected them, even if they rarely spoke about these things. Some things simply did not need to be said out loud in order to be understood, and their friendship was working in different ways. Both appreciated the silence as much as well-placed words. Finally, the snake’s words wavered through the room like fading smoke, and Njord tilted his head. “Tasseography? For Divination?”

It seemed like there was more than just their heritage and upbringing connecting them, as both boys were rather fond of the subject - even though it was most likely out of different reasons. Njord paused, his fingers coming to a halt as well as he considered to ask what had been burning on the tip of his tongue for a while now. If anyone knew - or understood - those odd dreams he was having lately, it would be Archibald Munn. But did he trust the boy enough to ask such a question and share such an intimate fact? “I planned to go for a walk, but I changed my mind. Archib- Archie, I mean. Can I ask you a question?” It sounded so official, as if he was about to make a proposal while all he wanted to do was to finally find a way out of his own mind, which was tricky enough on most days. “It might be personal.” His fingers picked up their work of kneading his friend’s shoulders and neck again, still careful and gentle, yet with the right firm pressure to loosen those stiff and tense muscles.

Friendship was not something Archie gave to people easily, while he could be pleasant to talk to if he so desired and even appear charming at this event or the other, he never quite got to trust most people enough to let them get close to him. Yet there were still those few he liked talking to, those people he wanted around and cared for, those whose flaws he could forgive and would never dare judge, those who in some way or other managed to bring happiness to his life. In many ways, Njord was one of those people, and while both boys may have seemed completely different at first sigh, Archie was appreciative for all those small things they shared, and of how the badger just seemed to understand things without the need for him to do much explaining in the first place. He had never been one to rely on people, and lowering his guard so much around someone other than his brother was most definitely something that only occurred rarely.

Physical contact was also something that Archibald didn’t give easily, ever since he was a child he had been against most people touching him, frowning and slapping hands away out of mere instinct. He couldn’t really explain why, but those were the walls he built to distance himself from others. it wasn’t really a matter of pride or of feeling superior to any of them, but simply about the way he was, distrusting of most and only allowing some those small privileges. With Athelstan it had always come naturally, taking his younger brother’s hand in his whenever necessary, embracing him and holding him, and even gently hitting him whenever he was acting overly stupid. Even as they grew such things had not changed much, and such was the affection and the trust he granted those dearest to him. Such was the trust which allowed him to feel comfortable as Njord’s hands were on his back, even if it all had come as sudden and unexpected.

Though while nothing about it was uncomfortable, it was still not something he was used to, and perhaps that was why he looked down as the question was asked, or why those rose colors that were so unusual of him remained on his cheeks. “Yes, though it is also out of personal fondness for the subject, I have always found it more interesting than most Divination methods. I suppose that must seem quite predictable of me, huh?” Archie commented, a quiet chuckle leaving him despite the fact that his mind was filled with thoughts of how upsetting his uncle would find that statement. After all, the man was a seer and quite set on following the Celtic traditions of their family - something that the snake fully agreed on, but he was allowed to have hobbies of his own, wasn’t he? Or at least have them as long as they didn’t interfere with his role as heir of the Munn family.

The sudden pause came as a surprise, wondering if Njord had decided it was time to put an end to all that and feeling almost sad. Archie might have never admitted it to anyone, but affections given by those close to him always came as comforting and were always welcomed, even if it was just a simple hug instead of a rather amazing backrub. It might be personal. His brows furrowed lightly at the sudden formality of the request, yet his ever present curiosity was there, lips pressing together for mere seconds before having the tension fade away as the kind massage was resumed. “Of course you can. You should know that without a need to ask for my permission, Njord” he responded, tone as soft and calm as always despite his own curiosity. Whatever it was, it seemed serious, and Archie’s mind wandered over what could it be bothering his friend to bring it up in such a manner.

Fate had its odd ways, as if the Norns enjoyed deliberately knotting wrong patterns into the threads of destiny they were holding into their hands. Yet at some point, they had braided the delicate threads of Archibald’s and Njord’s life together, even though the badger did not know when this moment had passed. For once, he was not disappointed in how his life was going. Then again he was accepting towards most situations in his life, no matter how many obstacles were thrown in his way in the end. He would step around them or move them aside, yet he would never let them stop him from following his heart more than following his mind. With Archibald, Njord was sure that the young man followed his mind more than his heart, and eventually it was the reason why their friendship was working out so well: they completed each other in different ways, almost like two halves clicking in place after they had been separated for aeons of time.

If it was for Njord, it could always be like this - intimate friendship moments shared in the dusty communal common room as long as it was abandoned, only brightened by the weak afternoon sun that was shining through the windows. Almost as if the Gods were fondly looking down on them in this second, giving their blessing while his hands still worked on the snake’s muscles, and Archie’s voice filled the room as he spoke about the subject they were fond of. I suppose that must seem quite predictable of me. For a moment, the tall badger paused and tilted his head, before he joined the low chuckling and shook his head. “Was that a pun, Archie?” he asked almost teasingly while his digits kept digging into the boy’s shoulders, only stopping as he was granted permission to talk. It would be impossible for him to make his friend relax when he was tense himself, shaken to the core by the past few months.

He moved, his shadow falling upon the table and the couch before he seated himself - and the cushions almost looked like they belonged in a dollhouse when Njord was sitting beside them, too tall to fit in an environment with frilly pillows. Tall hands were folding into each other, kneading fingers while his sunlight-filled gaze was settled on these specks of light rather than on Archibald. Helping others was so easy - all he had to do was to listen and offer advice, to give a hug when it was required. This was different. This required him to speak up and spill his soul into someone else’s hand, to share something that his mother had always dismissed when he had told her about those weird dreams that seem to come true every now and then. A child’s fantasies, nothing to take serious.

“Sometimes….sometimes I dream. And when I dream, these dreams come true. Not always. But, it does not always happen when I sleep. On some days, I feel it during the day too - it feels like my throat tightens and my stomach twists. Archie, I do not know what is happening. But I am scared. I am so scared….” There it was, the confession he would have never dared to make in front of his family as he buried his face in his hands and shook his head, incapable of voicing any more emotions towards the problems he had been enduring for so long now. It did not feel right to share it - and yet he did, feeling slightly relieved while at the same time expecting Archie’s reply anxiously.

Destiny’ was a strange word, a confusing one, one that as a child had been wrapped in magic and mystery. He remembered sitting by his uncle’s side, being told stories of ancient times, tales of their deities and of their ancestors, all while intricate symbols were drawn on the ground. Knots. The representation of the interconnectivity of things, of how everything was related, of infinity - because to them destiny was never a lineal thing, because knots saw no end and no beginning. And his destiny? Well, that was one complicated knot, a path so perfectly laid for him to follow and never stray, yet a path not even he could clearly see in the fogs of the future, even if other people claimed to know where he should go next.

Had him befriending Njord been a matter of destiny or him fighting against it? It was hard for Archie to tell, as sometimes, when he looked at his friend, he could not help but remember his family’s hate for the Norse because of those lands that had been stolen all those centuries ago, his father’s dislike for the Nilssons because of all the obvious rumors that existed about them, and all the things that were supposed to keep him away from the Norwegian boy. Yet Njord was different, he had always been, and somehow they had fit together ever since they met, growing close despite all the things that were supposed to keep them from doing so, and how could such a thing not be the work of destiny itself? All in all, Archie loved his friend, and his eyes widened at the sudden accusation, light laughter leaving him in return. “I suppose so, although I did not even mean it that way” he admitted then.

That carefree moment of laughter didn’t last for very long, and as Njord walked towards the table, Archie’s gaze followed, suddenly all too aware that this would not be some easy or light conversation. He followed, taking calm and slow steps before sitting close to his friend, grey eyes never leaving the badger as he was watchful of every move, of every slight change in demeanor, something he had grown all too accustomed to do when in the presence of the people he actually did care for. But as the words came, they had not been what the snake had expected -if he had even been expecting anything in the first place- and concern filled his gaze while he bit on his lower lip, all too vivid memories suddenly filling his mind when listening to Njord’s concerns. Somehow, he found himself hugging his friend, arms naturally wrapping around him despite the fact that he had never been one to often comfort others unless it was his brother, and, on the most rare childhood occasions, his cousin.

“Njord” he spoke, and his tone was soft, kind, as gentle as the breeze that would sway treetops at those forest of which he was all too fond. “It will be alright, I promise” Archie added, and he meant it, even though he had no right to promise such thing. Then, he took a deep breath. “I have this uncle, Aldous Munn, he’s a seer, it is something that has ran in our bloodline for generations, I suppose. He is a bit eccentric and growing up around him was the craziest thing, but he is our family’s tradition keeper, and he would always tell us all these stories and warn us about things. The point is, one of those things were dreams, and he always told us to be watchful for the ones that seemed strange, for the ones that came true, and for the ones we thought meant more than what they should have meant.”

For a second, his lips pressed together, unsure of how to make his final statement without increasing his friend’s concern. “I think there is a high chance to may be having visions. But Njord, even if such is the case, you are aware that you don’t have to figure all of this out alone, right?” he asked then. And his gaze found the badger’s face, because in the end, that was the best way someone like Archibald Munn could say something as simple as ‘I'll always be here for you if you need me to be’ - words all too cheesy to ever dare speaking them.

Njord had grown up to deal with all those small issues all by himself, as those times when he had shared secrets that meant the world to a small child with his cousins had been long gone. They barely talked to him any more, apart from Sindre - and even the badger was disappointed of him at times, although he showed such emotions in less radical ways. Most of the Nilsson children seemed to be strangely subdued, drained of everything that was too obvious and too loud, with the shining exception of Preben who was always heard before he was seen. No matter how much disdain his relatives were showing towards him, Njord still loved them - but he could not trust any of them with the dreams that troubled him at night, as he was sure they would react just like his mother: brush his worries off and tell him he is overreacting, because he was imagining things - and had he not always been such a sensitive boy?

Opening up to someone was dangerous, because despite his gentle nature, the Norwegian was still cautious with whom he shared his deepest fears and whom he trusted in the end. He had little to lose, and yet worlds could fall apart if someone stabbed his back. It was the pain of betrayal that he feared - the same emotion that had haunted him when his portraits and photographs had been banned into the basement because he was no longer a son his parents could be proud of. Njord Rasmus Vikernes, family disappointment, cuckoo’s egg in the nest. The young man had never wanted to appear weak, and yet he was shaking in this moment, body tensing up as Archibald’s arms wrapped around him. He was well aware that his friend was not quite as affectionate, and the gesture came as a shock, shaking him to the core while he was still holding those burning tears back.

It will be alright, I promise. He wanted to believe his friend, wanted to nod and agree - but it was hard when those dreams were so strangling, and when there was no one to share these dreams with. But then, everything changed. A seer. There were no such things in their families - at least not that Njord was aware of. His parents did not speak about odd family members too often, already concerned enough that their own son would one day be counted to them as well - the ones whose names were erased and portraits banned. Before the badger could stop himself, he swung his arms around Archie and returned the hug - and then those tears he held back for too long started following as he leaned his forehead against his friend’s shoulder. “D-do you think I might be a s-seer? How c-can I b-be sure?” How can I be sure I am not going mad? It was what he wanted to ask, and yet he did not, overwhelmed by his own emotions and the other boy’s offer to help him through this.

“Th-this is n-not your battle. I shouldn’t h-h-have…,” Njord started, immediately apologizing for pouring his problems into the snake’s hand. It was weak and obnoxious, and not at all how he had been raised. Yet for the first time in a while, he did not feel like he was on the edge of madness. Visions would make sense - they were something the Gods always used to those who were blessed with the power to receive them. Völvas used to read the signs the Gods were giving, and their visions had been appreciated by those who wanted to take a glimpse at the future. But Njord could not quite see why he out of all people should have been blessed with such a gift - a gift that felt more like a curse the more he thought about it. It helped to lean against Archibald, to inhale the familiar scent of the other boy while being held - and in this moment, Njord regretted that he had not shared his concerns earlier.

When the Munn siblings were young, life had always been good and happy. In many ways they had been innocent, for they had lived in a perfect world where all bad things were just tales and legends. No terrible events had occurred in their lives, at least none which they were aware of, things like their parents arguing seemed natural and it was not something they questioned. At the age of sixth, Archibald discovered that life wasn’t perfect, for their aunt had been lost - gone in the seas, drowned by dreadful creatures. He remembered crying back then, and the fear and confusion that existed until his father had made it all better, he remembered the pain in his uncle’s expression, as well as in that of his younger cousin Aisley. Eleven years had passed, and a part of Archibald was sure the girl still had nightmares about the events of that Summer evening.

Aldous Bedivere Munn was a seer, he had had more than one vision in the past and he was a respected member of their family because of the gift that existed within him. Being a seer was something to be proud of when one was a Munn, yet not even the ability to see the future had allowed Aldous to prevent the demise of the woman he loved. Such were the grim things Archie thought of as he listened to Njord, holding his friend close while distant memories kept coming to mind. In no way could the snake understand what his friend was going through, and he would not pretend that he did understand, but he could hear the fear in the badger’s voice, and knowing that he was crying brought pain to his heart. Archibald Percival Munn did not care about many people in the world, but he loved the few friends he had, and he hated to know Njord had struggled and suffered so much without telling him about it. Was it hypocritical and selfish of him to think that way when he too had his own struggles? Most likely.

For a moment, Archie was quiet, because being quiet was always easier and he needed to gather his own thoughts on the matter. Fingers kindly digging in his friend’s blonde hair while his other hand rested on Njord’s back. “I can only assume based on what you have told me. There are always people you can talk to about this, and if you don’t want to talk to anyone then we can figure it out together. I know I may have no right to say this, but you don’t have to be afraid, because at least you are not alone in this anymore.” Archie spoke with a soft and quiet tone, and he meant every word, because even if he knew there was no way he could understand what it was like to be a seer, he still wanted to help Njord in every way he could.

He knew what it was like to pretend to be alright, to lie to people and smile. He knew what it was like to carry burdens and to have too much pride to rely on anyone for advice. Yet, ever since they met, Njord had been there, and he had always made it so easy to rely on him and lower his guard. In many ways, they friendship had always felt like some sort of safe haven and he wanted the badger to feel exactly that. “Of course it is my battle, because you are my friend, and is that not what friends do for each other? I cannot understand what you are going through, Njord, and I likely will never be able to understand. I may not be the best person to go to for advice when it comes to any of this, but I will be here for you regardless, even if you don’t want me to be.” It could have been the Munn within him that spoke, the one who was loyal to those around him and wanted what was best for the people he loved, or it could have just been Archie’s very own nature, the one that valued those close to him more than anything in the world.

There must have been a connection, a logical explanations why Njord’s gift - if one still wanted to call it a gift - was brushed off as him overreacting, exaggerating his migraines and dreams instead of taking him to a proper healer who might have found the reason for it earlier while the Munns seemed to handle such things differently. He knew that their families did not get along, and he knew better than to give away he has grown close to Archibald Munn out of all the people he could have chosen from. If his cousins ever noticed, none of them had spoken about it yet - and even if they would, Njord was not going to deny it. In many ways, Archie was a better person than a lot of his family members together, no matter what last name he carried. He was kindhearted and understanding, he was loyal and loving to those he cared about. Many things could be said by those who never got to know this side of the Slytherin, but Njord knew that Archie was good - at least he was good for him, like honey applied to chapped list and cooling balm on sunburn.

He did not want to be weak any more and he did not want to cry, and so he forced his breath to steady again while feeling Archibald’s fingers in his hair, inhaling the other boy’s scent, honey and hibiscus and all those other things that could not be named. “Who can I talk to? What do I have to do next?” he asked, because the tall Norwegian did not know if seers had to register, much like werewolves and animagi. Did it even matter to anyone but himself that he could take glimpses at a possible future? All too well Njord remembered the afternoon when he had woken, nightmares of a blood-drenched Sunwoo having ripped him out of his nap. There was no promise that he would not get dreams - no, visions - like that of his friend, too. “Your uncle...do the things he sees always come true?” he asked finally, his voice still so shaky while he finally dared looking up again, his palm wiping over his warm eyes.

With a deep and exhausted sigh, the young man tried to straighten his posture again, to breathe calmly and to stop crying. His features relaxed just a little at Archibald’s words, and a large hand reached out, softly landing on the other’s cheek for a moment. “I want you to be there. I wish I had spoken to you earlier, but I was sure...that my family was right, that I was overreacting. Thank you so much.” His voice was still shaky and rough, and hiccup threatened to emerge immediately as he had not finished yet, but he did not wish to let go off his friend just yet, needed to feel the warmth and the familiarity of two boys who were not even supposed to be friends, leave alone having come so close in their rather short time together.

Time had never meant a lot to Njord. After all, he had known his cousins for a lifetime, and had many childhood memories of them - yet two of them barely spoke to him any more unless necessary, and Sindre disagreed with his views all too often. Something told him that Archibald was not going to abandon like this, that they would lost as friends. It did not always take a vision to be so sure of the future, and finally, a small smile fought its way back onto the badger’s face as he stared at the snake beside him, so full of gratefulness he could not quite express with words.

Archibald hated keeping secrets, hated hiding the truth, especially when the truth was being hidden from the family he loved. But his friendship with Njord was a secret, one he had to keep, for he knew all too well his family would never approve of such a thing - not even Athelstan did, and that was painful enough already. Why did he bother so much for a single person when there were plenty of other people in that castle he could befriend? Because not everyone was like Njord, and Archie could not blame him for belonging to the family he belonged. He knew Njord did not agree with much about his family, did not get along with most of his relatives at the school. Those were things the snake had learned overtime, and as much as he may have been judgemental he was also understanding, and he understood that the Norwegian did not deserve to be hated over something that had never been his choice to begin with.

At first he had been reluctant, of course he had, because throughout his life he had been taught nothing but to be wary of people like the Nilssons, but eventually it had resulted impossible for their friendship not to flourish, as often Njord seemed to understand him better than even his own brother. For Athelstan, Archie had to be a role model, perfect and never falling under the pressure that came with being the heir of the Munn family. He had learned that he could relax with the badger, breath, and stop pretending like all those expectations did not place a heavy toll on him. It was the trust that existed between them, the same trust that made Archie hug him and whisper promises of safety. “First of all, breath, no good will come from actions taken in the middle of distress and panic. I..I don’t know who you could talk to, maybe professor Kalisa would be a good option? I could talk to my uncle about it, maybe you could even meet him, I’m sure he could provide some answers, although you know he will likely be very reluctant about it” his response came as an honest one, whispered in a soft tone as his hand slowly traced circles on his friend’s broad back in a soothing manner.

Your uncle...do the things he sees always come true? Archie’s grey eyes narrowed at the question, and for a moment his expression was impossible to read, all worry and concern fading away as he thought of an answer which would be truthful and not as painful as reality. “Uncle Aldous rarely speaks of such things, I once asked him about it as a child, and he said he only saw what the gods allowed him to see, and told what they allowed him to tell. He’s...very cryptical like that” A gentle chuckle escaped him at the memory, for his uncle’s words were often puzzling, and they often confused him even now that he was no longer a child. “I do know the visions he has are not joyful ones, my cousin has told me as much, but somehow he’s always cheerful and smiling, and...I think that deep down I admire him for that” Archie admitted then, for it was true, and there was warmth to his voice as he spoke of his family, much alike the kind heat of those campfires they would sit as children around while listening to his uncle speak of their deities.

He stared back at Njord once the embrace was broken, smiling faintly at his friend despite his own surprise as the badger’s hand touched his cheek. It was something intimate, and with most people he would have slapped that hand away without even thinking about it, but instead Archie reached out, placing his hand over that of his friend and squeezing lightly for mere seconds before letting go once again. “I will be here as long as you want me to be, Njord.” he responded. This time it was him who touched the other’s cheek, brushing away tears with kindness as his gaze never the warm one of his friend. Those were the things others rarely saw, the things that they did not speak of, moments meant to stay in that room away from the eyes of anyone who wasn’t trusted. Archibald really did love his friends, and the last thing he wanted was to see one of them in pain. “You have nothing to thank me for, because I know you would do the same for me if I ever were in distress.”
