Name: (FIRST AND LAST NAME ONLY!) John Prentiss Sutton
Age: 18
Year: Seventh
Bloodline: Pureblood

Appearance:
Prentiss is tan, lanky, and scruffy -most of the time-. He likes floral print and combat boots. He’s unassuming in that he looks like a marshmallow but is the kind of guy who would have no qualms busting in your kneecaps with a baseball bat and remaining perfectly jovial about it.
Personality:
Prentiss is a passionate boy. His heart is full of things, and passion is both positive and negative. When he loves something, he loves with his whole heart, and when he despises something, the hatred he feels can only be matched by how much he loves something else. The people he claims as his friends and family and found family, he will endeavour to protect with everything he has. While he may sometimes seem foolish, Prentiss is not naive. In his mind, his naivety is the root of why he’s in Mimi’s care, and his mother is deceased. He also knows that his father’s family wants him back, and that he’s not safe, and that’s why Mimi requested he finish the latter half of his schooling in Britain. That part of his family is not one that he wants to interact with much at all, at least not in ways that most people would deem healthy. His rage burns deep, as deep as his love flows.

He’s a good friend, and a very proud child, and more often than not, he’s the one egging his friends -and cousins- on with a well timed “How ‘bout you ain’t gon’ do it?” It’s for this reason that both Wilder and Chae had more injuries than he did growing up. He’s a “hold my beer” type of daredevil, but typically only after someone else has wiped out first. Jittery and almost hyperactive at moments, he’s always the first to propose an adventure, the one to push everyone further, and definitely the one to tell the others not to wuss out.

All work and no play makes Prentiss a dull boy.

His focus has never been on academics. Now, don’t get me wrong, Prentiss might be a young man from the South, but he’s educated. He’s intelligent enough that he could coast on his intelligence by just regurgitating everything stored in his memory banks, but he’s also the type to default to busting his butt to work on what he’s talented at than to just cruise like rolling down a backroad with the top down. Mackenzie Sutton won’t have one of her babies slouch just because they’re capable of it, and hard work has been instilled in all thirteen of her grandchildren from the moment she got her hands on them. He’s good at anything that lets him get dirty, and has had an inclination toward working with magical plants and animals since his very first displays of magic. As such, it’s not really a surprise that he does his best in Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology. Some of this knowledge transfers over to Potions, which is largely what makes the class enjoyable for him, but he’s not in it for great grades and accolades. John Prentiss despises people who flaunt their intelligence as if it gives them merit, and is part of the reason why he downplays his so much. He definitely inherited his mother’s love of nature and value for life. In terms of classes that are less natural-born talent, but still come to him quite easily, Prentiss also has a particular propensity for the Dark Arts. Not Defense Against, but just Dark Arts. Hexes, Jinxes, Curses… he learns them much easier than he learns how to defend against them. It’s a strange duality that he’s trying to navigate, the love of life but the ability to wreak havoc on it so easily. He’s very conscious to choose the former before the latter.

While there are many good things about Prentiss, there’s also a lot of bad. It happens, sometimes, orphaned kids becoming problem children. Protective and proud, Prentiss is the first to resort to violence when defending people he cares about. He started out with biting around the kindergarten age, and progressed from there to hitting. Mackenzie removed him from elementary school and channeled his rage issues -sometimes triggered by the littlest things- into Quidditch to keep him out of trouble. Still, despite tools in place to keep him from exploding at random moments, John Prentiss is a fighter, prone to getting punchy. He’s not ashamed to say that he may or may not have taken a beater’s bat to a Thunderbird student’s kneecap in the middle of a quidditch game, but his defense is that the bludger was right there, Professor. Nevermind the comments that kid might’ve made about his saintly grandmother. (Nobody’s allowed to speak about his family like that. Nobody.)

Ultimately, until provoked in some way or another, he’s a quiet boy who just wants to scrub fire crabs and lie in the grass for as long as the sun is out. He loves his grandmother’s cooking, would kill for a decent glass of lemonade, and he’d do anything he could for the people he loves. He likes soft things, soft moments, and soft people. He’s closest to his cousins, Chae and Wilder, because of their unique circumstance in life, the lots that were cast for them. He’d go to war for them if he could, and could probably take out a number of people on his own if he had to.
Character Background:
When Juliette Sutton met Aime Esprit, she was under no illusions about love. She knew full well that this would end in heartbreak, in disaster. She had been always good at reading people, and of a darker bloodline than the young Sutton one, Aime proved to be as cold and heartless as the alligators that his family so easily twisted and bound to their will. The affection he showered her with faded quickly to apathy, a back and forth cycle of sweetness and cruelty when she got the strength to try to leave.

It wasn’t until she became pregnant that the nature witch found the strength to leave. She sent word ahead to her mother that it might be a while before she heard from her again, something that was hard for Mackenzie Sutton to hear as the family had always been so close.

John Prentiss Lorde Sutton was born deep in the bayou, far away from both the prying eyes of muggles and wixes alike. Juliette’s propensity for atmospheric magic allowed her to hide herself in swamp miasmas and preternatural fog, enough to keep her from murderous Esprit eyes. She was desperate to keep her son, to raise him away from everything that she had grown up with, and send him to Laveau Academy for Magical Arts when he was old enough, but it was dangerous. He grew up a happy, sweet child, unaware of the dangers not only of his home, but lurking just beyond the shadows. His first bouts of magic came around the time he was five, and were much like that of his family’s propensity, the boy marching around their modest vegetable patch, little lord of all he surveyed, with a juvenile gator in tow as if hypnotized.

Juliette packed him up and fled to her family’s home as quickly as she possibly could. Too young to really understand, Prentiss was only quelled by the fact that there were two cousins the same age as him. Wilder was far more gregarious, though he exhibited a lot of self-control for so young, and Chae -”Honey, this is Lindy”- was much softer than their rowdy cousin, preferring to play quietly in the dirt, but not above pushing Wilder if he kicked it in her face. He fit. He wasn’t lonely anymore. He got to see his mother smile.

But the things that are gold cannot stay.

The thing about leaving the swamps and the protection that they gave her despite the risks they carried was that the moment she left was the moment that Aime was able to find her. Ambient magic fades away when you return to civilization, people so disconnected from nature that they aren’t apart of it anymore, but for someone like Juliette, who lived and breathed ambient magic, the deeply rooted magic that kept sequoias growing strong and swamps as long-lived, the lack of ambient magic surrounding her made her a homing beacon.

That morning, stormclouds were on the horizon, and she could feel in her bones that she was standing on a precipice that she wouldn’t come back from. Her mother, wise beyond her years even for a witch, was careful to keep Prentiss and Wilder away from outside, warding them as best she could as Juliette marched out to meet her death.

The duel on the Sutton property was, in a word, incredible. AIme Esprit would not leave without his son and Juliette’s life for taking him. Juliette would lose her life before she let that family take her baby. Both skilled wixes, either one of them would die there, or they both would. The fighting carried into the house, the sounds of spells and screaming reaching young ears. Juliette took three Cruciatus curses before Prentiss joined them outside. In a fit of panic, he managed to escape his grandmother’s grasp, unsure of what he would do so small and without a wand, but he couldn’t just let this strange man claiming to be his father hurt his mother like this.

Prentiss took the fourth Cruciatus that Aime threw, throwing himself in front of his mother. The action would forever leave him with hypersensitivity and jitters, but it fueled his mother with the ferocity she needed to get back up and keep fighting. Planting herself firmly between her incapacitated son and his father, Juliette Sutton fought and fought and fought until she won. Her resilience and her wand’s superiority outlasted Aime, killed by his wand backfiring as he tried maniacally to end the fight once and for all and take his son. All Prentiss really remembers is his mother collapsing next to him, and the next moment, she was gone. The stress of the battle was too much for her heart.

Prentiss was never the same. He clung to nature to remember and honor his mother, he hated his father’s family at large. But Mackenzie made sure he grew up knowing the woman that his mother was, and the man that she would’ve wanted him to be. Juliette’s legacy was what ended with him sorted into Horned Serpent at Ilvermorny. He grew up with numerous attitude issues, but clung to family; that was what had kept his mother fighting so long, and ultimately what saved his life nearly a decade ago. Emotional reliance on his cousins would help to keep him balanced, but he still had hair trigger reactions. It wasn’t until he was sixteen that Mackenzie suggested that maybe he go overseas to be with Lindy, that maybe not being so distant from her would help him, that he could look out for her better if he was there. He agreed after a long discussion about it with Wilder, and subsequently transferred to Hogwarts to finish out his education.
The Sorting Hat is placed on your head. What are you thinking at that moment?: “Well, I’m here. Mimi wants me to look out for Lindy, so I’m going to look out for Lindy. But I swear, if you put me with those uppity green kids, or the Gryffindors, Hat, you and I are boutta have some problems.”

Full Name: John Prentiss Lorde Sutton
Blood Status: Pureblood
Sex | Gender | Pronouns: designated male at birth | cisgender boy| he/him
House: Hufflepuff
Year: Seventh
Age | Birthday | Sun Sign: 18 | 2 November | Scorpio

Appearance:
The first thing one may notice about Prentiss is that they are both tall, and tan. They're darker than the cousins that flank them more often than not, Chae's freckled porcelain and Wilder's freckled peach. Their eyes are a bright brown like cocoa powder, shot through with splinters like that very same powder being mixed into dark chocolate bars. More often than not, there may be ash like bags under their eyes, or the rich bruise of a black eye. If their face is not carrying some injury, then Prentiss has to be having a poor week.

One may notice how their dark hair goes through frequent changes, from a fohawk fade to a buxxcut and then back again. At times when the calm child seems particularly frazzled, you can tell by the state of their hair. When on the longer side, it may sometimes look as though someone has tried to tear chunks of it right from their scalp, leaving it a terrible mess. Prentiss has developed an anxious habit of tugging on their hair as though to tear it out when stress levels peak.

For feeling as though they're going to fall apart as often as they do, JP still manages to look very well put together. Their grandmother may have raised a disaster of a problem child, but at least she taught them to dress well.
