As much as Brandon loved Hogwarts and thought of magic as being superior to what he had known his whole life, there were just some things a muggle-born Gen Z had a hard time living without. In Brandon's case - the Internet. He was pretty sure his long-eared owl Barnaby was absolutely exhausted and fed up (can owls even be fed up?) with him asking his parents to send the daily muggle newspapers to him. He didn't like feeling out of the loop with that part of his life, alas, electricity just refused to work in Hogwarts.

He could live without it, sure, but besides the news he also missed all the music he'd saved up at home. If only he could get a simple MP3 player work at Hogwarts, he'd be over the moon. But how to fight against magic? This had pestered him for months. Summer was coming closer with large steps and he wanted to have a player full of music ready by the next term, so he abandoned his solo football practice for long hours in the library.

It was a Friday afternoon, right after his classes. He'd ran to the library to go back to his spot in the back. Several large tomes were already on the table, waiting for him to continue his research. He threw his backpack down in the corner, opened the largest tome,, called "Magic and Muggle inventions, Part 3 - Construction" and started leafing through. A magic quill was hovering next to him, ready to write down his words, but so far there were only sighs of frustration. The quill tried its best to write those down, too.

He ruffled his hair, untied his Hufflepuff tie and turned a page, his head sinking down into his hands. His stare grew vacant as time went by and soon enough he was staring at a moving diagram of the inside of a wizard camera. He wondered, if it was even possible and if it was, then this is the reason why he wasn't sorted into Ravenclaw.

It was a Friday afternoon near the end of term, and the whole castle had spring fever. Ronan could feel the restlessness buzzing off his fellow students and even some of the professors, each one of them anxious in anticipation of the upcoming exams, and itching for the freedom of summer.

The Ravenclaw had his own reasons for feeling anxious, exams being the least of his worries. He could sense the tension building in his neck and shoulders, the energy both directionless and inexpressible. His fingers fumbled over the cool fabric of his robes, plucked at the collar of his shirt, and tugged at the hem of his sweater until he caught himself fidgeting and gave his hands a firm, silent scolding. He forced his hands to fall still, curling them into fists and crossing his arms over them. He watched the toes of his shoes as he counted his steps to the library, head bent forward, expression blank and focused, likely giving all those he passed the impression that he was in far worse a mood than he actually was.

Because, really, despite the nervous energy running in tracks beneath the pale surface of his skin, Ronan wasn’t in a bad mood at all. On the contrary, he had just completed a practical evaluation in Muggle Studies where he executed a flawless performance operating a muggle toaster. He left the evaluation with a swelling pride in his chest, and a lightness in his step that translated into the way he walked leaned slightly forward onto his toes.

Ronan bounced and wriggled all the way to the library where he welcomed the quiet stillness of the air. Without hesitation, he worked his way to a wing tucked off to one side of the room where he knew the books on mechanics -- muggle and magical alike -- waited for his eager fingers to strum their pages. But once he got there, an unfamiliar sight brought him to a sudden, jarring halt.

There was another boy sitting at the table in the section. It wasn’t that unusual to find other students loitering in this corner of the library, but it was unusual to find them there on a Friday afternoon. It was even more unusual to find them seated with their eyes glazed over, jaws hanging slack, staring down at their open books with the intensity of someone determined to set the page on fire with the sheer force of their gaze alone. And yet, that was the scene waiting for Ronan when he arrived.

Standing where he was, the Ravenclaw dropped his eyes from the stranger sitting at the table. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, teeth sinking to bite into the soft flesh of his bottom lip. Should he say something? Turn and leave? Or pretend like he didn’t see the boy sitting there?

Moving slowly, Ronan took a gamble. He began edging around the table towards one of the bookcases. Maybe if he moved slowly enough, the other boy wouldn’t notice him. Maybe if he prayed hard enough to Merlin, he could grab the book he wanted and slip back out from the section without having to acknowledge the boy at all.
