As it turned out, spending time in the kitchens to create a meal or treat of some kind as often as Kiska did had served as a benefit for her this evening. Several afternoons earlier, the girl had spent a few hours with apples and cinnamon and flour up to here for JR's basket and the thing had been too small to fit everything the recipe had yielded as delicately as she had wanted to pack it. That had meant, in addition to a plate of them being left for the elves in the kitchens, several additional apple turnovers had made their way back to the Gryffindor common room and had sat very temptingly on a bedside table in her dormitory. They were being picked off one by one by the girls she shared her dorm with, but there were still a few stragglers that hadn’t yet been devoured. And having these extra stragglers was where the benefit part came in.

You see, there was a younger Gryffindor boy that the girl had been giving her attention to, as he had seemed out of sorts as of late. And Kiss was a sucker for someone who needed someone else to pick them up, brush them off, and shove a pastry at. That was sort of what had happened when Kiss had been waiting for him in their common room with a small plate in hand, perched on the edge of one of the armchairs as though her strike were something to be afraid of. Please don’t attack me with a pastry. She was certainly lame enough to laugh at her own jokes, and had done so until William had entered the room. Upon seeing him, the lioness had stood, taken his hand and put the turnover it to it, had looped her arm through his with a declaration of “We're going to raid the kitchen tonight,” and off they had went. Or, rather, off she had steered him. He had naturally put up with whole protesting show, but little was a match for the girl when she was determined on something.

What the boy probably didn’t know was that she was very determined to deflect her attention and efforts on to someone else, rather than herself. She was one who liked to give attention to others – it filled her with some sort of emotion she couldn’t quite put a name to. It made her feel good, too, when the spirits of that other person or persons were lifted with her antics. In spite of his protesting, Kiss was pretty sure that he was actually appreciative of her essentially taking him hostage and chiding him to just “Eat your dessert" when he started the grumbling again. The focus on another person was also a way to keep her from spending more time than she wanted dwelling on her own thoughts and feelings. What a mess those had been lately. Up, down, left, right, backwards, upside down… If it was a direction, the young woman felt like they had traveled that way. It was getting better, no doubt made better by her interactions with people throughout the castle, but still crept up on her more frequently than would have been ideal.

At least sneaking them around didn’t prove to be terribly difficult a task in comparison to emotion juggling; other students were in bed like they were supposed to be and the Prefects seemed to be monitoring other parts of the school. That meant there was little need to be tiptoeing around like bandits and they were able to walk normally along the corridors and staircases, though Kiss didn’t dare try to strike up much of a conversation here. Voices echoed something horribly off of the cold stone walls and there was going to be plenty of time for chitchat shortly. Very shortly, as a matter of fact, as that old portrait of fruit came in to view. Tickling the pear with the hand that wasn’t currently wrapped around William's arm, Kiss stepped back as the portrait swung forward to allow them access into the room beyond. Satisfied that her companion probably wasn’t going anywhere at this point, she slipped her arm from his and climbed through.

“Cookies? Chips? Crackers? Pies? Ice cream?” the girl inquired, looking to William over her shoulder as she ventured to the fridge. It had been awhile since the lioness had displayed a take-charge attitude and it felt really good to slide back in to it now. “What is your go-to when you want to get a little nuts and worry about consequences later?”

He wasn't sure what he expected, seeing her perched on the red armchair like the cat that got the cream and the whole fucking cake as well.

A part of him wished this wasn't going to be about him, that it would be a matter of nodding in greeting and moving his ass to the safe confines of his dorm room while she waited for her actual victim to smother in love and pastries. Another part, nestled deep in the tangle of emotions that was his heart, wished it was. A callout for William Theodore Pierce to stop the bullshit right now and get a grip on his life like the grown-ass teenager he was supposed to be. A triangular piece of food suddenly shoved in his palm wasn't gonna solve every problem, Billy wasn't stupid nor five, but maybe it was a start. So kiss had stood from her spot on the couch in what seemed to be record time and, indeed, made a move before Billy could even think about making a run for it.

She was smart, or perhaps she had just gotten good at knowing him. Which was a scary thought nevertheless.

Nobody was allowed to know Billy Pierce. None of his friends knew about him mom, or that life before England. Every aspect of Brooklyn: the gang, the constellation painted above his bed, the key around his neck; nobody was allowed to know. Not one of his friends in Britain knew that his favourite dish was chowder, its smell early in the morning enough to get him as excited as a child on Christmas day. Just his mom and him, no dad in the picture, was something he had been able to keep behind closed walls for years on end. Billy had resembled a prison when arriving at Hogwarts at the age of eleven: his emotions, wishes and memories held in the tight confines of his chest until the right person arrived ready to spend ages picking locks. Kiss had been one of those people, although over the years she had felt more like the girl making sure the outsides looked nice, never bothering to search for the treasures within.

Billy was okay with that.

She didn't pry, just swatted his hands away when they got too sticky for other people's belongings. Her motherhenning shoved him full enough with food until his stomach was the force dragging him down, rather than a horrible mood pulling the corners of his lips towards the earth. It was kind of like hot summer evenings in Brooklyn, when his mom just didn't know how to cheer him up besides shoving a bowl of cavity inducing cereal into his hands swapping potatoes with donuts for dinner. Scolding herself for being a bad mother all the way to Sunday, she would only forget about it upon seeing the small smile worming its way back onto her son's features as his face got illuminated by yet another episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reruns.

Kiss' arm linked into his, a ritual as old as girl scout cookies. So this was what being touch starved felt like, huh.

Now, at Hogwarts in the Gryffindor common room as well as the hallways, everything was quiet. No loud music during colourful action scenes mingling with the dedicated crunch crunch of his sugary dinner. Only whispering portraits staring at two students that were supposed to be sleeping hours ago. Billy knew this road, knew to turn right at the portrait of a bard dressed in flamboyant greens with a voice like honking cars. Still his feet let Kiss take the lead, guide them through the maze of chilly hallways and cold to the touch walls, until the tapestries gave way and were swapped for a big fruit bowl portrait. He knew how the pear would giggle, and still wasn't quite used to the weirdness of it all just yet. No matter how awkward he felt, what mattered was what lay beyond: a room so full of treasures his younger self would've been equal parts jealous and excited until both erupted into one annoyingly loud child.

Present Billy believed he had grown up, and kept quiet as his feet shuffled around on the tiled floor. With both hands safely within the confines of his trouser pockets- untouched pastry abandoned on one of the counters, the boy just shrugged as a last act of careless self-defence. "I-" I Don't was what he wanted to tell her but the small ripple in his stomach, undetected by most ears but very much there, was what made him rethink his plan of action. That and her enthusiasm, her need to care for this little half-being creature thing called Billy Pierce. Maybe most of his friends had stopped caring for a kid no longer human, but perhaps it wasn't the end of the world to let someone in again.

"Does this place have Lucky Charms...?" Truth number one. There was no mention of his mother, not yet, just the hesitant feeling in the dark room of Trust. "...Funfetti cake? I guess?"

Lucky Charms. Kiska couldn’t remember the last time she’d even had a bowl of cereal, let alone the specific one her companion mentioned. She recalled her brother loving the stuff, but the girl had not been a fan – there were never enough marshmallows, the mostly good part of the cereal, and they had a weird almost condensed powdery sort of consistency that stuck in your molars besides. Her nose wrinkled as she considered it, but that was what Billy wanted. It seemed like such an ordinary thing to desire in a place like this… but would this magical kitchen have it? Her expression turned thoughtful as she peered in to the fridge at the assortment of condiments and fresh ingredients that were housed there, trying to determine where the best spot within the vast array of cabinets would be to begin the search. Really, any one of them. The odds that the correct one would be picked the first time were slim; having learned where the baking ingredients were years ago, Kiss hadn’t explored much of the other cabinets. Or, if she had, she’d forgotten what their contents were designated to be. Now was as good a time as any to refresh the memory and learn new spots for things, right?

“I don’t know that I have ever seen Lucky Charms here,” the Gryffindor admitted, finally shaking herself from her thoughts and closing up the fridge before moving around the kitchen to her first stop. Cereal would be considered a snack of some sort, right? Demetri sure seemed to treat it that way, deeming it suitable for all meals of the day. So it only made sense to go to the cupboards that housed the crisps and pretzels and chocolate-somethings. Perhaps they would at least give an idea as to the right direction to continue in. Billy was a tough cookie to crack – no, no, nut, not cookie, or that phrase made little sense at all – even in spite of her continued efforts. It was a good thing the lioness had a whole lot of practice in the art of patience and perseverance; just ask JR Zerner, who, after years of not speaking to her, could be considered a friend again. Of course, it had been brought to the point of emotional exhaustion and quite nearly being over for good, yet they had reconciled and were in a better place now for it. Thus far, Kiska couldn’t quite get a read on whether this particular Gryffindor was simply putting up with her shenanigans or actually enjoyed them. But she had vowed to find out.

The first cupboard turning out to be a dud, Kiss turned to look to the lion and offered up a smile. “Want to help rummage through the cupboards? Or at least nab the ingredients for some funfetti cake from the third cupboard from the right, there. Flour, vanilla extract, sugar, baking powder, probably salt, and I’m pretty sure they have rainbow sprinkles in there, too…” No sense in him just watching her pull open cupboard after cupboard, right?

She was on her third one now and noticing a trend; the lower cabinets had shelves that were situated too closely together to be a suitable hiding spot for cereal boxes. In opening up one of the upper cabinets just to see, the suspicion that was starting to stir was confirmed. Spending more time looking in the lower spaces would just be a complete waste of it, as the uppers were the ones with the shelving spaced out much more. At least Kiska had thought to look now instead of after going through each one of the bottom cupboards, looking up to the ceiling in frustration, and determining there was just no Lucky Charms in the cards for them today. She was trying not to let it show, but the possibility of not being able to find what specifically Billy wanted had dredged up an emotion that the girl couldn’t quite put a finger on and immediately wanted to shove away. It felt so normal to be rummaging around in the kitchens again, gathering food and ingredients. It felt so normal to be asking an unwitting assistant to help in locating said food and ingredients. With months having passed that felt anything but, any sense of normalcy and ‘before’ were going to be clung to.

Rein it in. The mental chiding came on its own and she sucked in a breath to ease the tightness in her chest, moving the stool that the elves must have used to reach the counters over to the next set of cabinet doors. Opening them up, her expression changed from tense to triumphant and she brandished the box of sweet cereal to Billy. “Found some!”
