The lake was not one of Paisley's favorite spots on the castle grounds, but it also was not her least favorite. As the Winter came to a close, the lake would often become a hot spot amongst students. Some would find themselves jumping in, swimming with the creatures that inhabited. Others would simply sit at the waters edge, admiring its fine beauty. The way the light trickled down across its surface, illuminating the faces of those in its path. On this particular evening, the lake was empty. The temperature had not ripened to its normal Spring temperature just yet, for Spring had only officially begun only days prior. Students were just starting to enjoy the fruits that came with this season, while others were still wishing for cooler days. Paisley was a fan of warmer climates, so she immediently took advantage of the new season. This was her chance to enjoy the lake before everyone else took the hint and found themselves being called to its icy surface.

Now Paisley was not someone who often broke the rules. On the contrary, something like that would likely drive her anxiety up to an extraordinary level, and one that would be both dangerous to her physical and emotional health. Instead, Paisley was trying to get some time outside before the curfew hit, and she would find herself in trouble with the groundskeeper. Her initial thought was to head out to the stables and talk with some of the horses, but after reaching about fifty feet from the stables, she saw the signs of other students in its stalls. She wasn't entirely in the mood to talk to anyone, so she decided against it. Instead, she went to the place that she had originally decided to go to; the lake.

Walking up the lake, the Hufflepuff girl brushed a piece of her strawberry blonde hair behind her ear and sighed. Kicking off her flats, she dipped her big toe into the lake before quickly taking it back with a quick giggle. Of course it was cold, why wouldn't it be? Spring had only just begun, not long enough to warm the water up yet. She instinctually brought her arms around her, holding herself as she stared across the lake, slightly blinded by the sun setting just beyond it. Something about its beauty called to her. It reminded her of a simpler time, when her parents brought her to Italy on vacation. Paisley must have been only ten or eleven, because she hadn't started Hogwarts just yet, but she knew she would be there soon. Paisley's mother brought her over to the waters edge and just sat there, as she held her daughter and stared off into the distance. It was a quiet moment, but one that she would never forget. She didn't often talk to her mother about her job, or really, anything meaningful at all. They were strangers, for the most part, and yet, Paisley knew that she loved her. Her mother had never harmed her, nor said a mean word to her. That's why it made it hard when she passed away. It also made things complicated, because she never really knew enough to miss her.

Her legs began to grow heavy, and Paisley found herself sitting on the cold earth, bringing her knees to her chest and resting her chin softly on top. She held her legs close to her chest, as if she were freezing in the cool evening air. Her hair was messy, and her sweater was one two sizes too big, but nothing out of the ordinary for the sixth year Hufflepuff. She hadn't noticed anyone had approached her. On the contrary, she was completely lost in her own mind.

Even if JR was not running as often from conflicts, it was still programed into his very soul that the lion would run mile after mile, daily. In the last few years it had been to soothe his mind, to stop the panic attacks from coming more often than not - and this still happened, but JR was also learning this was not the answer to coping with emotions and life in general. The soles of his tennis shoes were permanently worn, even when he bought new ones, it was only a matter of weeks before they were etched with the earth, dirt collected on them and worn in as they hugged each foot. It was the best time of the year to run in his opinion - winter was no longer hugging the landscape as much and the birds were singing more. It was nice that the air still had a little bit of a bite to it, if only because then the young man wasn't dying once the run was finished.

Sometimes he met people in the middle of his runs; other times it was peaceful and quiet. Since meeting the Gryffindor Prefect at a time when JR should've been in his dorm, he tried to wear out his body and mind before the curfew hour came, whenever possible. There were still nights the young man was unable to sleep, but coupled with Chance, his kitten, to hold and be draw comfort from and his friend - girlfriend - Kiska, who had started slipping into his dorm room to seek comfort of her own, the lion tried to stay in his dorm room at night more often than not after curfew. It was just better not to run into the other lion anymore, JR vowed.

A peacefulness had settled along the grounds and currently, JR was nearing the lake. How many times had he run the same looping pathway, day after day? He had met people near the Quidditch stadium, on the lawns, in the courtyard, in the Forbidden Forest, at the lake; the faces swirled together to make a collage in his mind and the young man smiled slightly. His pace was steady but not super fast at the moment, his long legs carrying him on the pathway that was so familiar. A sigh escaped the lion's lips, content within himself. Kiss was home, Erik didn't seem overly upset to be his cousin, Sammy had named his kitten - all of these things were good. In fact, they were so good that a part of the young man wondered when the shoe would drop and he would be hit in the face with something hard, the way it had happened when he had come face to face with the Gryffindor Prefect.

Shoving those thoughts from his mind, the young man blinked his piercing green eyes, noticing the figure by the lake for the first time. It seemed to be a girl, with the way she was positioned and the longer hair - not that he was judging, his own male best friend had long, flowing hair - but this was JR's first impression of the silhouette near the lakeside. Coming closer, he knew it was a girl for sure, but he also knew that it was not someone he recognized. This was not unusual, with how many students inhabited the castle.

Still, the young woman seemed cold and as he neared, his pace slowed because his fingers were already fishing for his wand from the pocket of his black sweatpants. A warming spell would do, the same one JR had casted upon Erik many moons ago, the night they had met. A smile relaxed his features as he whispered the incantation, shrugging to himself when the thought came too late that the girl might not want his help.

Paisley continued to stare out to the lake, and general sense of calmness overwhelming the normally anxious and self-conscious sixth year badger. It had been a few stressful months, some days filled with tears, and other filled with questions for lack of good answers. Recently, things had gotten a bit hazy at home. Her mother had passed away only months previously, and still she wasn't a hundred percent sure exactly what had killed her. Why did magic not have the same affect on her mother than on others? Why couldn't magic save her? Paisley didn't have the answers, nor had she had the courage to ask her Father, who probably wouldn't have answered her anyway. He had thrown himself into his work, following her passing. Not that this was any different than normal days. But, he was obviously hiding something, right? Why wouldn't he try to ease his teenage daughters mind about her mothers passing, if he wasn't trying to hide something? Was he trying to protect her? Or was he trying to protect his dead wife? Paisley wasn't sure. It was all so fuzzy.

Warm, now it was warm.

And suddenly Paisley grew a bit nervous, turning around to figure out who or what was the source of the sudden warmness that she was now feeling. It wasn't that she was cold, not entirely. Maybe she was a little, but she was hugging herself for some comfort, rather than the warmth that she was providing her. It was then that she noticed the rather taller, unfamiliar looking boy, somewhere in the distance, but close enough for her to see that he had his wand out, holding it next to his black sweatpants. Why had he decided to do this, if in fact it was he who cast the charm to keep her warm. Paisley gulped for a second, realizing that she was staring at the stranger, before turning her attention back to the lake and hoping that she wasn't making a fool of herself. After all, she was quite good at doing that.

A few more seconds went by, before Paisley felt the unnerving feeling like she couldn't just sit there. She had been spotted, for lack of a better term. Should she just leave and pretend that she was meeting someone? 'Oh hey.. I uhm, forgot my jacket?' And just walk away from the stranger? Or should she just wait and try to strike up some conversation, not that she was good at doing such things. Paisley was a bit of an awkward girl, clumsy on most days, and sweet at heart. As much as she meant well, she often came off as an over anxious teenager who needed something to calm her down. Maybe that was why she found herself more comfortable with being a fly on the wall, rather than the decoration that everyone talked about. She had spent six years in this castle, and she was still unfamiliar with half of the people she walked past on any given day. Was that her own fault, or theres? She wasn't quite sure.

Thats it, she had to do something.

Pushing herself up from her position comfortably near the lake, she strolled over to the stranger confidently, but looking much more like an angry toddler, then the striking girl that she was attempting to be. "I was fine, you know." She said quickly, trying to sound angry even though she wasn't. She then began to stroll pass him and tripped. Yes, that's right. She didn't trip over something, but her own two feet, landing face first on the earth, maybe two feet away from where she just told the stranger off if you could call it. With an awkward low sounding groan, the Hufflepuff girl stayed positioned on the ground, with her face about an inch deep in the dirt, hoping that the stranger would walk away before she had the pleasure of feeling embarassed even more than she already was.

Typical Paisley.

When would he learn that not everyone wanted accepted help the way that Erik had? Or the way that Kiska and even Liam accepted and enjoyed at times? The way that Madeline, Aki, and some many other had accepted and thanked him for? For each and every person the young man helped there was probably two or three other people that had not accepted his help, although the person who always stuck out in the lion's head was Erik's boyfriend. Even though it was ages ago, it was also like yesterday, that JR had found them in the Gryffindor common room together. Since that day, he tried to stay clear of his roommate.

At the same time, there was mixed feelings there because of the fact that Erik was dating the other seventh year boy. Now, as he was being talked at by the girl whom he had just sent a charm towards, the young man saw flashed of Quincy's angry face in his mind. He knew why it mattered so much that Quincy didn't like him and it had everything to do with the fact that his best friend was in love with the other seventh year boy. Even if he and Erik didn't talk much about it, JR knew that.

Before he could think of a response to the young woman who was apparently upset with his warming charm, she was in the squishy mud on the ground. Brow furrowing, his brain almost trying to play catch up, JR shifted on his feet, trying to help her. "Don't worry about it," he smiled at the girl. "I swear I won't tell anyone." Letting her arm go where he had had been holding her in order to try and help, the lion tucked his wand back into his pocket, fingers fidgeting a bit in his pocket with the tool that had once introduced him to the wizarding world.

"And I'm sorry," he apologized to the young woman, eyes going from her to the lake. "I just... I see people and sometimes try to help them before asking. Even if I shouldn't." The excuse sounded lame even to his own ears. JR scanned the lakeside; it was a place where he found peace and happiness, if only because the young man had some great memories with his friends and even girlfriend at the lake from the time he was much smaller and a first year. Looking back to the girl, he shifted his feet, fighting the urge to "help" by using a cleaning spell on her clothing, but deciding that was not the best choice. "Anyways," he gestured with the hand that wasn't in his pocket, back towards the lawns. "I can be on my way again."
