School projects required more decent clothing, because Madeline was not exactly enthusiastic about getting frog brain and snail slime on her most precious dresses during doing this Potions homework together with Liam Andrews. At least he was one of her housemates so it had been rather easy to catch him in the corridors and set up a date for these happenings - and he did seem rather nice, so Maddy was not worried when she walked into the abandoned classroom, tables cleaned recently with the scent of soap still in the air. For sure there had been a class of first years at work before, because they often made a great mess. Maddy loved Potions, and it was one of her best classes, so she was actually looking forward to spending an afternoon in the gloomy dungeons. Her heels were clicking on the stone ground as she walked, a soft hum accompanying her as she dropped her bag onto the desk at the front, reaching for a black hairbow and carefully tying her hair up so it would be out of the danger zone as well.

“Herbicide was the potion, right?” the eagle asked instead of offering a greeting to her housemate, offering a smile to Liam before she started taking out a cauldron and her book, a copy of Magical Drafts and Potions. The girl pushed the sleeves of her shirt up and smoothed down the ruffles of her tulle shirt before her black stiletto nail over the ingredients list stated on the page, squinting a little through heavily painted eyes. “We need lionfish spines, flobberworm mucus and Horklump juice. Together with the standard ingredient, but that’s a given anyway,” she said cheerfully and walked towards the ingredients cabinet, dark eyes wandering over the piled up spider legs and frog eyes in jars, the mermaid scales and the pearl dust, the ashwinder eggs that were kept in a frozen state to keep them from setting the whole castle on fire.

Skilled fingers reached for the jar with the lionfish spines, as well as the bottle of Horklump juice and the - oh. “The flobberworm mucus is empty. Buuuut good news - there are still some flobberworms in here!” Maddy chimed and carried the ingredients back to the table, batting mascara-covered lashes at Liam before reaching into her back again, retrieving her own personal mortar and pestle in order to get started. “Now, would you rather retrieve the mucus or crush the spines?” Madeline raised the jar that was filled with the latter, shaking it so the spines rattled against the glass. Her eyes were bright in excitement as she looked at her current teammate, long and dark fingernails tapping against the table while she was waiting for a reply from the boy.

Sometimes the ingredients at Hogwarts almost seemed harmless compared to what they had at home - then again, the Poes’ home was full of things they most likely shouldn’t be having, and she could not exactly go out and boast with it all, even if she wanted to. Instead, she was keeping her mouth shut and looked expectantly at the older eagle, twirling a single loose strand that had slipped out of her hairbow around her finger while she was waiting.

Let's get down to business played in the young man's head as he was greeted by his fellow housemate. At least this partner would prove to be one that wanted to actually do the potion rather than complain about getting her fingers dirty or something. Liam had a great many partners in his seven years at Hogwarts, including those girls that didn't want to break a nail, boys that expected Liam to do all the work simply because he was an eagle, ones that didn't talk to him at all, ones that were horrible at whatever class they were in at the time and Liam would have to redo their part anyways, but this was already proving to be none of these types of partners. It seemed that the fellow eagle actually was willing to do the work to get the grade and did not want to deal with any funny business at all. This was good. Liam wanted to get the potion finished and out to the lake before it got too late.

His fingers wrapped around the strap of his bag and Liam set down the bag in an empty chair next to the table that Madeline was working at. Blue pearls gazed at her, then at the book that she had brought out before he could even reach for his. A smile played at the edges of his lips. Was it that the girl was in a hurry for some reason, or that she was serious about her studies? For some reason, the young man dressed in faded jeans and a light green polo shirt guessed that it was the latter. Maybe it was just an air that the young woman had about her, or maybe it was the fact that she was a fellow Ravenclaw. "It was," he finally replied, moving to set her cauldron completely up. He had brought his own, but what use was it unpacking his when for once one of his partners had actually come prepared?

Situating it over the fire that he lit, the young man looked back towards the young woman that was situating ingredients on the table. It wasn't often that he was found in the dungeons, but brewing potions was definitely one of the few reasons to find Liam Andrews in the darkest and gloomiest part of the castle where no sunlight could reach his skin. As his eyes settled on her once more, he was struck by the fact that his companion for the day wore more make-up than most of the girls that he knew and briefly, he wondered what Nasha, the mermaid that lived in the lake would think of the item. "I'll take the spines, if you want?" His answer came out as more of a question as the pearly blue eyes landed on her long fingernails, wondering which the girl would rather do.

He was happy to have a partner that actually gave a damn about their schoolwork that the truth was that Liam didn't truly mind which he was asked to do. It seemed that the young woman was going to take command of this project and as long as she was going to brew the potion correctly, who was he to mind? Liam was laid back enough that he appreciated this, when he could, as long as it didn't screw up his grades.

It was not hard to find people with the same enthusiasm in the house with the eagle in its emblem, and yet it was sometimes surprising. Whether Madeline knew if she was overwhelming or not was yet to be found out, yet the boy she was supposed to work with seemed to be alright with her taking the lead, and she gave him a smile in return. They would not need two cauldrons as long as both of them did the same amount of work, and she was positive that Liam was going to help her as far as his expenses went, even though she did not know how far that was at this time of their encounter. Instead, her tulle skirt busily swished behind her as she moved through the classroom, heels clicking as if she were a secretary witch in the Ministry of Magic. Potions were - next to Herbology - her forte, she was comfortable with the situation and eager to get started.

When Liam stated which of the two tasks he wanted to take, Madeline quietly decided that he was no gentleman - because wouldn’t a gentleman have taken the gruesome work of retrieving mucus from a flobberworm instead of crushing the spines? Fortunately, she did not mind, and smoothly, she handed over the jar with the spines inside towards him, finding that they would make quite an adequate jewelry if only combined with the right gems and chains. Maybe, she would buy some for herself and use them during the next holiday, as she was currently too busy with a less pleasant work. The girl looked down at her fingers, rubbing them over her skirt for a moment before reaching for her wand.

A simple spell coated them with something like invisible gloves, keeping her rings and nails from getting covered in mucus while she was quietly humming to herself. The flobberworm mucus was used to thicken a potion and often came in rather odd bottles that needed to be held by the top and never the bottom, unless one wanted to risk tipping it all over and spilling it. For a moment, a thought crossed Maddy’s mind - maybe someone had spilled the mucus, as it was a perfect explanation for no one having replaced the contents yet. She reached into the bigger jug that contained the wiggling flobberworms, and there was not a moment of disgust as she picked one of the worms, dropping it on the table and handling it just like she would have handled a lemon she was about to juice: squeeze and twist until there was a satisfying result.

Holding the wiggling worm over the jug was the hardest part of it all, and she pressed her black lips together in concentration, relieved to see that they wouldn’t need too much mucus for this, and one flobberworm did the job just fine. With a small grin, she closed the lid of the jug again and shoved it aside, another flick of her wand removing the gloves. “Now, that’s done. The spines have to go in first, I can measure the standard ingredient?” she offered helpfully, only now realising they would have to wait an hour once the first part was executed. Oh dear, she had not planned this in.

Liam snorted softly under his breath as the Disney song reached the depths of mind changed from [ii] defeat the Huns[/i] to defeat the potions. He couldn't help it, it was something that had hit him out of nowhere and was probably thanks to growing up muggleborn that the eagle knew the song at all. Hopefully his new teammate wouldn't exactly think that Liam was laughing at her, but the clicking of her heels was echoing in the dungeons because of the stone floor. The young man shifted and grabbed the pestal from his bag, leaving the contents open before reaching for her lionfish spines. Liam checked the page that her book was flipped open to, before the pearly blue eyes returned to the task at hand.

Maybe he should've offered to do the dirty work of getting the flubberworms, but the truth of the matter was that one could often tell what kind of partner they might have if they refused to do the dirty work for the potion. No doubt that the other eagle was probably also sizing him up, but for once, the young man didn't care. His gut was telling him that Madeline Poe was going to be an excellent partner, especially since the young woman had not even flinched about the worms. Plus, he could get the spines all powdered and then help her with the worms as the first part of the potion was brewing. It was clear that the eagle had read up on the potion that the two were doing in the gloomiest part of the dungeons beforehand - while the potion was brewing the spines, he would be able to help Madeline and make sure that it was done right. It was a win-win sort of situation for the student that cared so much about his grades.

Soon, the spines were a rough powder just a the text book had told him to make it and Liam looked up to his fellow housemate as she spoke, "Go ahead." Logic was that it would be heard to mess that step up anyways. The seventh year hummed softly as he crushed the last of the spines in a small container that he had brought with, so that it would be easier to get the powder to the cauldron. Liam wiped his brow on his sleeve with his left arm, the one that was not holding the pastel in his fingers. With the heat on under the cauldron, even the coldest part of the school was quickly warming up.

Liam looked up to the blonde haired housemate, surprised when she mentioned that the worms were already done. Clearly as he had worked, she had also done her part for the potion. A little bit of a grin crept into his features, approval coming. "Very nice. I thought I'd end up helping you with them while this first part brews for the first forty five minutes to an hour. It's nice to have a partner that actually cares."
