The overcast sky swirled with subtle patterns that teased the eyes of anyone who tried to make since of them. A light mist made the air feel heavy and threatened to fill the rest of the day with yet another bout of rain. Occasionally, the wind would sigh and causing the landscape to stir during its otherwise deep slumber. As if agitated by the disturbance, the trees would shake their leafy heads, causing miniature showers to fall on unsuspecting folk.

The rough tree bark pressed into Rode’s back as she supported herself with its trunk. Moisture seeped into her clothes as the ground cradled the rest of her. With pale skin and hair the color of dying embers, she stuck out amongst the muted earth tones of her surroundings. Peeking out from the bag next to her was an assortment of study equipment that had been forgotten in favor of an earthworm who was visiting the surface world.

“Well aren’t you a brave little creature, It's dangerous up here for something like you.” noted the young woman as she scooped the wiggling critter with a handful of mud. She spoke softly, her voice punctuated with an Irish lilt. As if in response to her comment, it exposed more of its tubular body to the damp spring air before diving back into the moist earth.

“I wonder what it’s like to be you. It can’t be very exciting, eternally tunneling through darkness with no destination. Maybe you’re different though. I mean, there must be a reason you came here after all. Are you an adventurer? Or maybe you’re just lost.” Rode gingerly placed the handful of dirt containing the worm back on the ground. Attempting to clean the rest of the muck from her hands, she gave them a hard shake followed by brushing them off on her knees.

She wished it farewell and good luck as it disappeared back into the bowls of the planet. “If you ever happen by me again, maybe I’ll show you something new.” She whispered quietly after it with a sigh. “But probably not.”

Liam Andrews was often found outside, if he wasn't in the library. While the library was one of the young man's hideaways from the world, the eagle also liked to do things with his hands. So it was out to the greenhouses that he went for a bit of planting, watering, and generally enjoying the little bit of green that they had to offer the world. Outside it was dreary and spring had not quite touched the grounds of Hogwarts- though if the rain was any indication, it was trying. At least the flurries had turned into the soft misting that was happening right now. He supposed that he ought to be going back to the castle soon. The eagle had hoped that maybe the rain would let up and he would go visit the mermaid in the lake, but that didn't seem to be Mother natures plans for the day.

Wiping his hands of the potting soil that he had been using, the young man exited the greenhouses and looked up at the sky. The clouds were swirling and billowing. The air had that distinct smell of rain and Liam knew that it would only be a matter of time before the clouds opened and the rain poured from the heavens rather than the fine mist that was hitting his face right now. He pulled the hood of his sweatshirt up anyways, not that it would do a super lot to protect his face, but it was something. His hands burrowed into the pockets of his jeans, keeping them protected from the combined combination of the air temperature, the misting and the slight amount of wind that was in the air.

He started to walk, make his way to the castle and the little bit of warmth that the castle would offer - it was dry at least, even if the school was notorious for being on the cooler side. His blue eyes wandered around as he moved towards the castle, slightly disappointed that the weather was going to keep him from going to the lake. He supposed he could use charms to protect himself from the environment and go there anyways, but he knew that the chances of Nasha showing up in this type of weather was probably slim to none, so the eagle was going to skip that little bit of an adventure today. His fingers in his right pocket curled around the seashell that she had given him and a smile formed on his thin lips. A promise between them to keep the secret that she was even in the lake.

His eyes fell on a figure that had her back against the tree. She seemed to be talking to herself, or something that her hand was holding. Liam couldn't see from where he was what it was, but he knew the girl. "Rode!" he called out, his voice raising above the wind and the mist, as well as enough to cover the distance between them. "It's going to rain!"

Rode’s pale eyes remained glued to the spot the squirmy creature had just been. After a few minutes of silent watching, the young lioness figured the worm wasn’t coming back. Likely, it had only poked its head out from its hole on accident. It was just as well, the surface world was just not a safe place for an animal like him. Even if he made it past the early birds and the boots of the unsuspecting, he had to deal with well-intentioned adventurer wanting to take him on her escapades. The red head closed her eyes and smiled at the notion.

As the breeze teased the girl’s hair, she imagined herself as the captain of a pirate ship. The light spring mist turned into the salty ocean spray. The water swirled as the brewing storm around her. As the sails whipped wildly in the wind, she fought the gales for control over the boat. Rode opened her eyes again, and shook her head. Definitely not a safe situation for an earthworm. There wasn’t enough dirt on a ship, for one and it also would have probably been swept away in the storm. The world was a cruel place for such small, vulnerable critters.

In the distance, the red head heard a vaguely familiar voice yell her name. It was barely audible thanks to the wind and sprinkling rain so she couldn’t quite place who was speaking. She sat up and looked about for the source of the shout. Even with the poor visibility, her eyes were able to pinpoint the caller. It was a fellow student, a Ravenclaw named Liam. She had seen him around the grounds on several occasions and they had spoken once or twice. He was nice and seemed to share some of the same interests that she did.

No particularly wanting to engage in a shouting match with the eagle, the lioness stood and dusted the moist earth off the back of her skirt. With a soft sigh, she stretched, her muscles stiff from being curled up so long in the chilly spring air, then gathered her things. As she started towards Liam in a gentle but steady jog, she heard him call out something else. Rode wasn’t quite able to make out what he was saying but she was fairly certain is was something about the rain. Her pale brow furrowed as she tried to think of what he was trying to get across when a fat drop hit her dead on the nose.

It took mere seconds for the weather to turn from just overcast and brooding to a full-on shower. The young woman lifted her bag above her head in an attempt to stop the onslaught of water droplets intent on assaulting her but had little success in keeping herself dry. She cursed herself for not being better prepared for such a scenario before remembering that she was a witch. Briefly, she stopped to, pull out her want a cast a spell to help keep the rain off. That was better. At least now she wouldn’t get completely drenched.

Continuing her journey, the lioness soon arrived within speaking distance of the other student. “What was that about the rain?”

Thunderstorms had and always would bring a smile to the eagle's lips. It reminded him of his childhood when the young boy would stand in the garage with his father, watching the water impale on the earth, the trees dancing in the storm as the wind guided their movements. It had always made him squeal with laughter and excitement; the two of them had spent hours watching from the safety of the rooftop in the garage. Of course that was before Liam had known about magic and being able to keep himself dry in the storms. His laughter came above the wind and the droplets that pelleted the two students on the grounds. He lifted his hands to the storm and looked up, purposely catching the drops on his face and tongue, squinting slightly even as he enjoyed the wetsness. Soon he'd be drenched and need to go inside, but for now, the eagle enjoyed mother nature's fun.

His tongue caught the liquid and he swallowed, his hair became soaked. He looked back at the girl next to him to find that she had casted a charm to protect her from the rain but he just grinned at her, his hands returning to his sides as he grinned. "I said it's going to rain, and look, it has." He laughed and took some playful steps towards her, but the eagle didn't know her well enough to be playful - that was something that was reserved for when he was with Kiska.

How many times had he, Kiska and JR ran out into rain storms in their younger years, enjoying the wetness all over them, laughing and pushing each other in the mud and just generally being the trio that they were known for? How many times had the young man sat by a window as a storm came in since fifth year and wished for those sweet moments to come back as memories plagued him? Liam didn't have the answers, bt now that he was caught in this storm he could tell you that it was perfect - the rain would soon have him shivering with cold and running inside but in this moment - this moment was bliss for the Ravenclaw that had missed the times that he had spent with his muggle father watching the rain from the garage or running through the lawns with his two best friends without a care in the world.

Those times had passed though; Liam could only hope to make new memories now. With the fleeting memories he took off towards the castle, although he turned back to the lioness that was standing there in the rain, protected. "Come on," he yelled out over the wind, his face clearly expressing his happiness, his giddiness, his excitement over the storm. "This is fun!"

Rain had never been something that had bothered the red head. There had been days where she would come home soaked from the rain or from playing in left over puddles. Many a new dress had been ruined from falling into muddy holes or playing by the creek near her home. It would drive her mother crazy, of course. She was afraid Rode would fall ill or seriously injure herself. Her fears weren’t unwarranted. The lioness had quite the scar collection from an uncountable number of skinned knees and elbows, cuts and bruises, and even a few broken bones she had acquired.

The faint sound of thunder pealed through the air. The lioness looked around as if expecting to see the accompanying spark of lightening fill the sky. Her face turned to her fellow student and she grinned when he mentioned the rain. “Yeah, so it has,” she said, matching his chuckle with a soft laugh. “No surprises there. At least it’s not snowing anymore. Maybe we’ll have some warmer days ahead.” The idea of spring made the girl excited. While winter had its exciting moments, like the first few days of snow and Christmas and New Year’s celebrations but once the end of January hit, she was ready to move on.

Come on! This is fun!” And with that, the eagle sped off towards the school. Running in the rain looked tempting but Rode hesitated for a second then uncast the charm keeping her dry from everything except her bag. There was no need to ruin her things. With an excited shout she sped off after Liam, her feet pounding against the softening earth. She laughed once again as she tried to catch up. After pushing herself into a sprint, the girl finally made it next to the wizard. “You’re right! This is fun!” Her words came between short little gasps for air.

It hadn’t taken long for the water to plaster her coppery hair to her face and neck. Her clothes were sodden, the blouse clung to her skin and her skirt, now heavy with water, twisted and tangled itself around her legs as she ran. The canvas of that made up her shoes was not waterproof in the least and they squelched with every step through the now muddy field. While her exhilaration kept her warm now, she was sure that she would feel the chill later on down in her bones. Not that she cared, this was fun. “So,” she panted, “what brings you out here?

His eyes swept the grounds - there was no one else out of course, but watching the rain left an exhilarating feeling in the young man's bones. His blue pearls shined with laughter and mischief and the eagle felt happiness soar through him. His grin was infectious and finally the eagle stopped to look. His body was under an alcove now and his breath was coming more rapidly, but he didn't care. There was something about a good rain wetting the earth that he had always loved. Mother Nature reminding them all that she was in charge of all the doings of the sun and the skies. His eyes found Rode, who had followed him and the young man pulled her under the shelter, still grinning like a mad man. "This is so great," his voice louder than usual only so she could hear him above the rain.

Now any other teen boy might find it difficult to concentrate with a wet female next to him, but the young man had no thoughts of anything like that on his mind. Liam was as innocent as they come. In all of his seventeen years, nearly eighteen, since his birthday was coming soon, the young man had never been kissed before. Not that he had thought much about that either. It was simply something other people did, while the eagle was busy studying or doing other such things. It did not mean that he was not the type to notice a pretty girl, but it was rare. Then again, it was even rarer for the eagle to notice these things about boys. It just wasn't where his interests lay.

Running fingers through wet hair, the eagle let her arm go and gestured out with his fingers towards the greenhouses. "I was out there, doing some planting." It was something the young man had found himself doing for the last few years, each spring making the trek out to the greenhouses and helping the Herbology teacher with the plants that grew in the greenhouses. His eyes settled again on nothing in particular, his ears, eyes, and nose smelling the sight, sound and the smell of the day. "I love the rain, don't you? There's just something about it that reminds me of my childhood, watching it."

Rode felt a sudden shift in her momentum as the eagle grabbed her by the arm and pulled her so that she was now standing under a protective alcove. Not having expected to be dragged like this, she stumbled briefly but managed to relocate her footing in time to save her from taking a dive onto the muddy ground. The witch shook her ginger locks to dispel some of the water that had collected there in spray of tiny droplets. Yet another laugh managed to escape her lips as she wrung out the remaining moisture in her hair, then moved on to working on the hem of her sodden skirt.

Once she had had her fill of pointlessly trying to make a dent in drying herself off, she let her fingers wander outside of the protection of their temporary shelter. The fat drops hit the palm of her hands with a barely audible plop, creating miniature splashes as they struck the surface and lost their form. Now that she was no longer running, she could feel the chill start to seep through her skin down to her bones, a process that was expedited by the occasional rush of wind that whipped the two students. Rode didn’t mind being a bit chilly, fairly used to the cold stone castle as well as her parents’ drafty house back in Ireland

What were you planting?” asked the redhead a she pulled her arm back into the dry area and hugged it close to her body. Her pale blue eyes wandered to the dreary yet beautiful landscape then began darting about as they tried to keep track of the innumerable droplets that were falling from the sky. “It is quite beautiful, especially when you think about the way it brings everything to life. I always liked to play in the puddles when I was younger. I would pretend I was a frog. It was fun, but I always got so muddy.” She looked down at her shoes, now soaked completely though and covered in a shell of wet earth. “Kind of like right now, actually.

The eagle shifted his footing and sat down on the cold, wet stone that was underneath the small bit of shelter. Using his hands to push his body backwards, he rested his back against the stone wall. He was quiet for a moment as the young woman asked her questions, spoke of running in the puddles, his gaze staying on the heavy rain drops that the heavens had opened up and dumped out onto the Hogwarts' grounds. His smile was still tickling at the edges of his lips and he realized that for the first time in a while, he was a peace. Even the gardening he had been doing hadn't quite reached this level of tranquility in his body. His breath released in a soft air and his head relaxed against the wall as well - it certainly didn't matter at this point if he got a little wetter.

"Just some plants to help with potions later on," his answer was vague not because he didn't want to tell Rode what it was that he was planting, but because he didn't exactly think that she would be interested in listening to what he had been doing. Liam knew that most people weren't quite into the the green plants that fascinated him; that was okay, though, because everyone had their own likes and dislikes. He nodded at the second half of her response; still looking out over the grounds as drops formed puddles in the grass and the pathways that led over the school grounds.

"Puddle jumping is a great activity," he grinned at her, excitement seeping back into his voice, just as it always did when his emotions were starting to rise up. His blue pearls found the girl in his sights and for the first time did he notice that the person he was with was just as muddy as she was wet - which caused him to look down at himself with a small laugh. They were certainly quite the pair; wet and muddy. They would probably have to retreat to the castle soon enough before they were cold and shivering as well, but in that moment, the eagle didn't want to move. Liam was content and happy in that moment - there was no lingering thoughts of kiska or JR in his mind and his body was relaxed as he watched the rain keep coming down. Maybe all that the eagle had needed was a peaceful rain to make things all better again.

Letting her body slight down the damp coolness of the rough wall, occasionally fighting her skirt to keep it from snagging on the bricks and riding up her legs, the young witch sat on the ground, she came to rest at the bottom, her legs chilled by the stone tiles as she tucked them up under herself. Rode’s cornflower eyes briefly shifted their attention from the ongoing downpour to the company next to her. What a sight they must have been, not that anyone was wandering about to see them in weather like this. It seemed that they were the only two brave or stupid enough to be outside while the sky threw its tantrum. It was better that way, though, as she didn’t often get to escape the hustle and bustle of the castle very often. With spring approaching, the grounds had become quite a bit busier as the student body started taking advantage of the warmer weather.

Back home, gardening wasn’t an activity that captured the lioness’s attention very often. She preferred more engaging activities like hiking, climbing and trying to catch animals that made their home nearby hers. Magical gardening was different though. Working with plant that might try to bite your face off or kill you with their crying added a quite a bit of excitement that was lacking from its muggle counterpart. Then there was the added bonus of the exciting uses that magical flora added, piquing Rode’s interest further. The girl raised an eyebrow at Liam’s lacklustre answer. “What sort of potion are you brewing?” She didn’t want to press too hard, but her curiosity begged her to get some more information from him.

The witch laughed as the eagle commented on her childhood past time. It was a rather enjoyable activity, that was for sure. If she was completely honest, it was something she still occasionally indulged in even now. There was something satisfying about feeling the water splash up around one’s ankles or the feeling of invincibility gained when wearing wellies. The cobbled streets outside her father’s butchers shop had been the best place to visit. Then uneven surface allowed for an abundance of water to collect during rainy days. Her mother hated when she would play in the water when they were in the city, though and she didn’t get to splash around there often.

So, you garden and brew potions, what else do you do?

Mother nature had clearly not decided that she was done with this storm yet as it started to pour harder over the Hogwarts grounds, the wind picking up slightly. Liam wanted to freeze this moment in time where peacefulness was great and he was with someone that could appreciate the weather as much as he did. A part of him ached for it to be Kiss instead, but the girl was busy and this was something that he was not going to dwell on today. Rode was enjoying the storm with him and it made him smile; the way that they could share with each other and have this easy back and forth exchange. It seemed like lately all of the conversations that Liam had shared with people were borderline emotional and for someone as logical as the eagle, he didn't enjoy them very much.

His gaze drifted back to the greenhouses from the young woman next to him, still smiling. "Dittany can help with some healing things, so I grow it. Especially helps during Quidditch season, you know?" Liam had been recruited to play on a team as a reserve this term and he had yet to meet the team, but he knew that eventually someone was bound to get hurt. It was Quidditch, after all. The eagle always did like to be safe rather than sorry. He knew that this batch of Dittany wouldn't help him, but the reason he was growing it to replace some of the current stash of the plant that he thought he would inevitably be using for teammates.

Coldness had seeped into his bones, as the young man gazed out across the grounds and he sighed softly. He knew that it was time to go in, even if he did not yet want it to be. The eagle turned to the lioness beside him and gestured to the castle with his hand closet to the building. "I suppose it's time to go in, isn't it? Eventually the coldness of the rain gets to you." He sounded a little more down this time - for someone who didn't like emotions his seemed to fluctuate in his voice very easily. Shoving his hands into his pockets, the young man turned towards the school and started to walk, the rain still pouring from the heaven's and leaving a beautiful sight and sound in the eagle's opinion. His right hand grabbed the door handle and he tugged it open; holding it for the Gryffindor to come through before he went himself.

The pattering of rain turned into a roar as mother nature gave up slowly pouring water over the fields and chose to dumb the entire bucket all at once instead. Had the lioness been cozied up by the fire with her cat after a warm shower she may have been able to have a nice nap. The sounds of heavy rain were always something she found very soothing. It was probably a good thing she was in cool, damp clothing that were further chilled by the gloomy weather they were experiencing. Their run had left her feeling a bit tired and the atmosphere was far too relaxing for its own good.

Rode leaned in closer to the eagle in order to hear him speak over the volume of the weather. There were so many things in the magical world that she could have gotten a lot of use as a child. Dittany was definitely one of those things. The collection of various small, fading scars on her body would be much smaller if she had had access to it during her childhood adventures. She did get to make some use of it now, though. There were still times she would crawl into bed with a scraped knee or a cut elbow. “Actually, I did know that. I’ve used it my fair share of times. It’s great stuff. I’m sure those Quidditch players appreciate that you’re growing more,” she responded with soft laugh, “I would. Any if they don’t use it, feel fry to send it my way and I will.”

The cold had started to get to the witch. An involuntary shiver had settled into her body, causing her to hug her arms around herself tightly and rub them in an attempt to create some friction and thus create some heat. It didn’t really work, especially since the wind was intent on making sure she stayed cold by cutting through her wet clothes, causing goose pimples to pop up all over her pale skin. When Liam suggested they go in, the lioness nodded in agreement and pushed herself off the ground. She tried to brush some of the dirt and gravel stuck to the moist cloth of her skirt with little success. Picking up her, bag, still charmed to protect it from the rain, she followed the boy back to the castle.

“Oh! Thank you!” she chirped as she stepped through the open doorway into the much warmer interior. As much as she had enjoyed her little jaunt outside, it was nice to be inside again. Even with the overcast sky, it was still quite a bit brighter outside and it took her eyes a moment to adjust. She turned around to face the eagle and smiled. “Any other plans today?”

At some point or another, humans were bound to get cold from the rain. It was a sad thing, really, for the young man that loved being outside so much in the storm. Coldness was making his body involuntarily shiver and he shifted from foot to foot as he held the door with one hand, trying to stimulate some warmth to flow back through his body. It was a useless try, but it was worth the shot anyways, right? As Rode moved through the doorway, Liam stopped for another moment to gaze out and watch the storm, blinking water that was running down and into his eyes before wiping at it with a soaked sleeve. Again, a decent try, but an unsuccessful one at that.

Once they were inside, he pulled out his wand and made quick work of drying charms for both of them; but he was still cold inside the damp castle. Hogwarts wasn't known for it's overly warm temperatures and Liam knew that a hot shower would be on his list of things to do very shortly. "I'll be sure to remember that you want Dittany. When I'm not freezing, you can explain to me why exactly." Still shifting around a bit to try and get some warmth back into his limbs, the eagle looked to his friend and gave her a smile. As far as he knew the lioness was not on any Quidditch team. Briefly he wondered why she might need it, but it was not really his place to ask.

The castle was warmer than it was outside, for sure. Liam moved away and to a window, his heart still longing to be out in the weather, the way that Nasha could be in the water during the storm. A sigh slipped though his lips; playing in the rain was how he and Kiss had met when they were kids, first years and new at the school. They had both been running towards the castle when caught in the storm and had ended up playing in the mud together. It had been another hour before they had finally given up the rainstorm for being cold, laughing and best friends from that day forward. He longed for those days, when things seemed so much simpler. Pushing his hand off of the wall of the castle, he turned back to Rode once more. "I'm going to shower and study, but I'll see you soon and let you know about the Dittany."

It was probably rude of him to walk away as he turned and did, but he was done with emotions for the day. Done with the illogical amount of memories that plagued him. Liam was ready for his books and his bed after a hot shower and that's just what he was going to do.
