WR’s Special Requests, Abilities, and Items Policy

So you’d like a special request for your character -- great! Here’s the rundown on how to have one approved.

what is a special request?

On WR, special requests cover several categories: abilities, traits, items, and character types.

  • Abilities include things like wandless magic, Occlumency, Legilimency, Empathy, Divination, Animagi, etc. -- basically, things that your character would have to actually work towards in order to master.
  • Traits are innate (or comparatively innate -- think all or nothing; you either are this, or you aren’t) and would include Lycanthropy (werewolves), Vampires, Metamorphmagi, and Parselmouths.
  • Items are pretty self-explanatory: anything that would not typically belong at Hogwarts (extremely rare treasures, Invisibility Cloaks, status markers of a magical sort, magical pets) would fall into this category.
  • Finally, character types are just characters that aren’t part of your basic set of Hogwarts students and staff: Hogsmeade residents, Clash-only characters, ghosts, beasts.
  • Pets that are unusual but not magical no longer need to be ranked for, but you do need admin permission. Read more about pets here.

how do i obtain a special request?

Special requests are considered incentives* for participating in the ranking system. Requests are not available for use until final Review Team approval at Novice. At Novice, we will review your request and give you an official approval or denial. If you are approved, congratulations! You are now able to use this ability in threads and future profiles. If you are denied, you may reapply for the ability when you next rank.

If you do not have a special request in mind from the beginning, or decide you would like one after your character has begun to go through the ranking system, you may apply at any point at Novice or after in the ranking system for that request. If you choose to apply for a request, you may not incorporate your special request into your profile until after you have received approval. If you are concerned about how your special request fits in with your profile after receiving your request, you can always request a profile review here!

Allusion to special requests is not allowed in Beginner profiles.

*The only exception to this is for certain special character types, who will be approved for abilities or requests upon admin approval for creation.

An Introduction to Some Basic Special Requests

Occlumency

Occlumency is an ability which, at its most basic level, shields your mind from outside influence. The word Occlumency brings to mind preventing others from reading your thoughts, memories, or emotions, but advanced Occlumens are also able to control the parts of their mind they shield. Occlumency is a difficult ability, requiring strict mental and emotional discipline, and is usually studied in conjunction with Legilimency.

Legilimency

Legilimency is an ability which may be considered the opposite of Occlumency. Specifically, this would be the ability to invade other people’s minds. In addition to reading people’s minds and thoughts, Legilimens can also see the memories and feel the emotions of those minds they have entered. Furthermore, advanced Legilimens are able to influence the minds of those they enter -- for example, sending them false memories. Like Occlumency, Legilimency is a difficult ability which requires strict mental and emotional discipline, as well as a significant amount of training.

Empathy

Empathy is an ability which revolves around the sensing and projecting of emotions. Empaths can not only feel the emotions of those around them, but depending on the potency of the ability, they may also be able to influence them as well,, either voluntarily or involuntarily. Untrained Empaths may have problems controlling the emotions they feel or project, and they may not even be aware they possess this ability. While Empathy is classified as an ability, it is unlike other abilities in that it is hereditary, meaning that it usually exists somewhere back in a character’s family, whether recently or not.

Animagi

Animagus is the ability of a witch or wizard to transform into an animal at will, and is closely related to the subject of Transfiguration. An Animagus is only able to transform into one specific animal, and the animal in question usually reflects something about the witch or wizard’s personality. A transformed Animagus retains their mind, although their thoughts may be more simplified, depending on the animal in question. Officially, Animagus are required to register with the Ministry of Magic, although there are certainly those Animagi who do not do so.

Lycanthropy

Lycanthropy is a disease that results in the affected human’s transformation into a large, powerful wolf on the night of the full moon. The only way to contract it is to be bitten by a werewolf in their wolf form. An attack made by a werewolf in human form will nonetheless result in permanent physical scarring and changes in personality to reflect more feral habits, such as preferences for raw or undercooked meat.

There is currently no cure for lycanthropy. On the night of the full moon, the affected human undergoes a painful transformation into the body of a wolf. Although Muggles are only rarely able to distinguish between a werewolf and a normal wolf, most magical folk will have received enough education to be able to tell the difference: werewolves are generally larger in size, with a rounded (rather than pointed) snout, more human looking eyes, and a tufted tail. Physical traits from the human body may manifest themselves in the wolf form in characteristics such as fur and/or eye color, discoloration due to scars, etc.

Beyond the physical changes, lycanthropy also affects the mind. A transformed werewolf no longer retains a sense of humanity and has an insatiable need to attack specifically human beings. Currently, the only way for a human to keep their mind under transformation is through regular doses of Wolfsbane Potion. Missing a dose on the night of the full moon will hold the same results as having never had a dose at all prior.

The Ministry of Magic currently holds a registry of all werewolves. Werewolves are stigmatized and ostracized in society, often leading to them being discriminated against and treated more as objects than people. Thankfully, lycanthropy is not a genetically inherited disease; children of the bitten are not born with this condition.

Other common manifestations of lycanthropy present without the full moon include:

  • Increased senses, particularly smell
  • Self-isolation, shorter tempers particularly around the time of the full moon
  • Premature aging, although this may be exacerbated by limited access to necessary medical attention
  • Increased pallor as the full moon approaches

Metamorphmagus

Metamorphmagus is an extremely rare hereditary trait in which a witch or wizard can change their physical appearance at will. This extends to physical features including, but not limited to, coloring, gender, race, and age. While Metamorphmagi have an unlimited ability to change their appearance, the usage of their ability may be influenced by their mental and emotional state. Strong emotions may manifest themselves in involuntary physical transformations, and likewise, depression or extreme sadness may render the Metamorphmagus unable to use their abilities at all. Metamorphmagi manifests from birth; babies are able to change their appearance within the hour, although they are not able to comprehend what they are doing.

Parselmouths

A Parselmouth is a witch or wizard who has the trait of being able to understand the language of snakes, called Parseltongue, and converse with them. This skill is traditionally associated with Dark Wizards and Dark Magic, although this seems to be more superstition than anything, as Parseltongue is a rare skill which appears to be passed down along hereditary lines, except in extreme circumstances.

Vampires and Half-Vampires

Vampires are a magical creature classified as Beings by the Ministry of Magic. They can be distinguished by their pale skin, sharp fangs, avoidance of garlic, and of course, their consumption of human blood. Additionally, Vampires have enhanced senses, including their senses of smell, sight, and sound, as well as increased agility and increased strength, as well as an extreme sensitivity to light. With their classification as Beings, Vampires are afforded a certain degree of participation in Wizarding society, but at the same time, they are also studied in Defense Against the Dark Arts classes at wizarding schools, including Hogwarts. Of course, not all vampires are created equal. There are three general categories for Vampires:

  1. Ancestral Vampire
    • An Ancestral Vampire is defined as a Vampire who was born to Vampire parents. These Vampires are considered dangerous to humans, and are not allowed to attend Hogwarts or other wizarding schools.
  2. Transmogrified Vampire
    • A Transmogrified Vampire is defined as a human who was bitten by a Vampire, and subsequently turned into a Vampire. While Transmogrified Vampires are allowed to attend wizarding schools and possess wands, they face a number of external and internal challenges, including prejudice against Vampires and the emotional toil of being transformed.
  3. Half-Vampire
    • A Half-Vampire is the child of a human and a Vampire. Unlike Ancestral and Transmogrified Vampires, the Ministry of Magic considers Half-Vampires full wizards, and for the most part, Half-Vampires function like human wizards. However, Half and Part-Vampires are influenced by their Vampire genes--usually in the form of heightened sensitivity to light and heightened senses.

Seer

Seeing is the ability of a witch or wizard to see into the future. Traditionally, Seers use forms of Divination such as tea leaves, crystal balls, or tarot cards to see into the future and predict prophecies, although more often than not, their abilities will emerge in other ways. A Seer’s abilities vary from person to person, and likewise, vary in accuracy, shape, form, and frequency. A Seer’s prophecies are recorded and stored in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic. Seers are rare, and while the ability to See is hereditary, the cultivation and control of this ability is a learned trait.

Wandless Magic

Wandless magic is a skill which is usually introduced late in a Hogwarts student’s career, and involves the casting of spells without the traditional wand. Many students find this skill difficult, due to the amount of concentration and technique required to cast a spell without a wand. For this reason, certain branches of magic, most notably Transfiguration, are not conducive to being used in conjunction with wandless magic. Taking difficulty into consideration, the majority of students do not bother to develop their wandless magic abilities, preferring the comfort and security of a wand.

Other Special Requests

The Review Team will take your special request into consideration even if happens either to be not on this list or not explicitly existent in the canon wizarding world. We look at three things when it comes to approving requests:

  1. Does it fit into JKR’s canon magical world? If not, would it fit into existing canon?
  2. Does it fit into WR’s canon world? Does the ability or request exist in other characters on WURR, and if so, does your interpretation follow or coexist with the interpretation of other writers on the site without conflict?
  3. Does the ability or request affect your character’s development in some way, or have the potential to affect your character’s development in some way?

Some potential sources for other special requests include world folklore and mythology, variations of existing special abilities, and your own wide imagination!

If you are unsure about your atypical special request, you can always contact an admin and we can give you an unofficial sense of whether we would approve your special request or not.
