She had realized it as she was leaving the library. Tori's fingers lifted up to her neck, intending to trace the chain usually strung around it down to her locket. Except the chain was not there. She froze and her fingers splayed out across her throat, hoping she was somehow missing the touch of metal. But it did not come and she frantically looked down at her chest; no spot of silver gleamed out against her shirt. She hurried back into the library and carefully searched the table she had been sitting at as well as each row she had meandered down earlier. Nothing. She rushed out and down the stairs to the empty Great Hall, watching the floor as she moved. The table, benches and floor were all devoid of so much as a speck of dust, let alone her locket. This being a Saturday, there were very few places she had actually gone and she had not been to the Hufflepuff common room since she left it this morning so she turned on her heel and walked out of the castle.

Her stride became quicker as she neared the greenhouses and she had to force herself not to run through to her own plot, dodging around the few people that were there without even noticing them. It was perfectly organized, but only to her. The plants were a mix of magical and muggle. Prickly ash sat perfectly trimmed next to tangling flutterby bushes next to an overgrown-looking shrivelfig. She had spent hours here earlier, carefully tending to each of her plants as she had learned from her mother once she was old enough to walk. Now Tori knelt heavily on the ground and her hands moved through the branches and vines.

The longer she looked, the more frantic she became, no longer taking heed to the thorns that would occasionally bite into her or the leaves she would accidentally pull off. She could feel the panic welling inside her chest and her eyes prickled with tears. "Where is it?" She asked of her plants and herself. It had to be here. It was all she had of her mother, she needed it. She couldn't just forget about it. It had to be here. "It has to be here," she repeated aloud as she moved on to the next plant. She intended to check all of her plants until she found it. Hell, she would check the full greenhouse if she needed to! Some of these plants had minds of their own and the ability to move their feelers out of their own plots. There was always a chance a plant such as that could have grabbed it from where ever the locket had fallen.

Liam was very good at minding his own business. His mind was deep into the thoughts that he had about the plants at hand, not about the people that were around him - if there were even people around him. The eagle had been working in the greenhouses all day, really, any second that he could spare in the last three. There was much the that needed to be done, much that needed to be planted and transported and ready because spring was coming faster and faster. The young man was humming softly to himself, content in his own corner of the greenhouse, having completely forgotten the necklace that he had tucked into his pocket and would put in the lost and found area on his way back to Ravenclaw tower.

His fingers were black with the remaining smudges of dirt that were left; now that he had been here most of the day his transplanting was finished, but the task of watering all of the plants lay ahead. His hum changed to a soft whistle as he rubbed the back of his neck as his eyes wandered over the section of plants that he would water next. Rolling his shoulders, the young man moved to get the hose - only after getting his gloves on. This section of plants were known for not being the friendliest of sorts, but it didn't matter. The eagle would care for them as much as he cared for the rest of the green shrubbery in the greenhouse. If he wasn't learning about some sort of magical creature or with an animal of some sort, the young man was working with plants. Three things were more important than anything else in his life - learning, magical creatures/animals and plants. The only human that could make him give up any of these was Kiska Ferdenova and since she was so busy as of late, the eagle was even more content with these three parts of his life.

He got to work watering the section of plants just as there was a girl that stormed into the greenhouses."Tori!" he called out. "What's wrong?" The young woman seemed frantic and Liam couldn't imagine what might have ruffled her feathers in this way, what she was storming around the greenhouses for. It was disrupting the general sense of calm and peace that the place had and it was clear that she was acting out of her emotions rather than being logical about whatever it was that was going on - something that Liam stayed away from. In order to problem solve, one needed to be rational, not emotional.

She knew once she settled down a bit she was going to regret being so frantic. She had carelessly knocked leaves and buds to the ground, the hard work of the plants being wasted in her haste. The hufflepuff was usually so careful with the plants one might think they were her children. Tears slowly began trailing their way down her cheeks, leaving small dark circles on the ground where they hit. She ignored them as easily as she was doing the leaves.

Tori had never lost her necklace before. She rarely even took it off at all except to bathe and even then she would put it right back on afterwards. The heavy weight of it swinging on the long chain and hitting against her torso was soothing to her. When she was scared her hands would often find the silver locket and grip in for comfort as one would do another's hand. Her fingers would trace up and down the fine chain while she was deep in thought, somehow entrancing her further. And without the ability to do any of this she felt lost, floating out in the middle of an ocean while a storm came rushing in. In the future, when she would care again about her plants, she would chastise herself for relying on such a small item as if it were her boat in the water.

She jumped at the sound of the older ravenclaw's voice, coming back to herself as she tensed up. Quickly she wiped away the tears on her face, smudging dirt across her cheeks as she did so. She took a shaky breath, telling herself to just be calm, and stood up, spinning to face her friend. "Liam! Hi, sorry. I...I'm fine." She put on a small smile, her hands moving up to grip at a lock of her hair. "I was--was just looking for something. I lost..." The badger's voice shook as she spoke, her eyes darting back to the ground momentarily as if she might happen to catch a glimpse of silver in among the green.

She chewed on her lip, trying to avoid eye contact with the young man. "You, uhm, haven't seen a necklace around, have you? With a silver locket?" She asked meekly, her voice full of hope even while she told herself that there was very little chance of that. He would probably find her actions here annoying, causing such trouble and disturbing him to such a degree that he actually had to ask her what was wrong, and even more-so knowing it was for a piece of jewelry. Still, she really couldn't help it much more than a three-year old could help crying if they lost their favorite teddy bear.

The greenhouses brightened his mood; the earth stuck to his fingers and the smell of the soil filled the air and made the young man feel free somehow, like all was right in the world. There was nothing to worry about other than helping the seedlings turn into sprouts and then grow into plants. It was a place that was a safe haven to the eagle that was so in tune with mother nature and the world around him. He loved every part of being outside; but the greenhouses were just an extension, since the place was filled with things that could not be grown outside the walls for a variety of reasons, most of them having to do with the air becoming cooler and snow covering the ground for a lot of the plants in the houses.

Now, his brow furrowed as he watched the badger move about, knowing that the section of plants that she was tearing through was one that the girl had tried to be so careful with and this puzzled him. "Take a deep breath," he called out, trying to be helpful, his rational side of him filling him - she should be more careful or she would regret her actions at a later time, when he was more calm and thinking of the plants that she was trashing rather than whatever it was that was wrong in this moment. Feelings rarely stayed; they were fleeting, but destroyed plants could not be fixed.

Blue pearls watched her as he brushed his fingers against his jeans, leaving dirt streaks on them that he would have to get out later or feel guilty about the poor house-elf that had to tend to his laundry this week. "Please stop," he commanded softly, unsure if at this point, Tori could even hear him, but the young man couldn't bare to watch more plants get trampled in her search. "It's going to be okay," he called out, louder this time, knowing that the badger would be able to hear his words more clearly now. He finally caught her attention and his fingers grasped the edge of the table as she turned to him, trying to explain what was running through her head - or rather her heart, because it was clear that the young woman was not thinking logically but emotionally at the moment.

She wasn't looking at him, a clear sign that Tori knew that she was acting out a little bit because of whatever it was that bothered her. At least she was aware of the fact that she might be acting slightly ridiculous. His eyes were not unkind as he watched her, even as everyone that knew him knew that the eagle did not like to deal with emotions and preferred things to stay rational and logical. "Oh!" he exclaimed, finally understanding what was happening now that the badger had taken a moment to explain what was happening. Dirty fingers dug into his pocket and pulled out the silver chain with a locket attached, giving her a small smile. "I found this about an hour ago. I was going to take it to the lost and found when I was done here. It must be what you're looking for."

Her left hand went to the spot on her torso, just at the base of her breastbone, where the locket usually hung, fingers gripping at her shirt in the absence of the cool metal. She should have checked it more carefully before, she knew the ancient hook and eye clasp the necklace used was not the most reliable. She had meant to update it ages ago but never seemed to be able to find the time to do so, or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that she was afraid of changing anything about it. It wasn't uncommon for her to reach up and find her necklace was starting to slip off, usually she could feel it sliding across her skin and away from her body. She must have been too deeply engrossed in her work to notice it today, however, which is what put her in the predicament she currently found herself in.

Her emotions swirled around inside her chest, her heart rammed against her ribs and she felt like she must be close to a panic attack. Odd how something so small could cause all this, how she could become dependent on that locket as if it were a cigarette. Her eyes studied her feet as she waited for the ravenclaw's response. She had tried hard in the past years to remain composed around him, friendly, calm and polite. Had her necklace not been at the forefront of her worries she might have been concerned that she had just ruined any chance she had at making the crush she harbored towards the boy something more substantial.

She felt certain he would chastise her for acting so rashly, for being so emotional rather than using the logic he preferred, yet he surprised her by saying he actually had found a necklace. Her head snapped up, first taking in the small smile he was giving her and then focusing more closely on the chain he was holding out. "Oh!" The small sound rushed out of her with her breath as she delicately took the piece of jewelry. She inspected it just to be sure, her eyes catching the engraving of the Deveaux family shield. A smile lit up her features and she threw her arms around the eagle, hugging him almost as tightly as she held the silver in her palm.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I could kiss you. Really, I could," the words flew off her tongue without much breath and with no thought as she let him go. Without much more time wasted she looped the chain around her neck and made sure the clasp was secure this time. She took another shaky breath as her eyes started to tear up again. "I'm sorry for disturbing you. I just..." She stopped herself before she could truly express how panicked she had been. The pain in her chest was beginning to abate now and the whirl of emotions inside had started to settle. Her hand still held firmly to the locket however, as if a part of her was afraid it would vanish again.
