The train had stopped in the middle of nowhere, and Benjamin had – to no one’s surprise – fallen into some kind of stupor, his cat pressed against his chest and washed-out wide behind the shock of messy curls that was always falling in his face. Announcements had been made, meant to calm the students within the train. Would his father be around to take him out of here and bring him home? No, because even if Mister Flourish would be around, he had duties to fulfil and couldn’t just drop them all to pamper his son. Not that he had ever pampered his son in any way. Benny was sick of being a bother to everyone around him, watching as students hurried through the aisle between the compartments, apparently careless of the plea to stay in their seats. Marbles meowed, and the boy raised the cat enough to press a kiss in between his ears, shivering although it wasn’t cold. It was summer after all, bad things were not supposed to happen in summer.

And yet they did – they happened all the time, and Benjamin’s wishful thinking of closing his eyes and counting down to ten only to undo these happenings did not work out. He had tried several times, calmly counting only to inhale so hard that his lungs had started hurting for a moment. It was too much – he needed to get out of here, no matter what had been said. Scrambling his belongings together, Benny abandoned his suitcase and only took his backpack, shouldering it and holding Marbles closer to his chest as he left the compartment, pausing when he heard yells from another train wagon, accompanied by banging sounds. If that was what under control sounded like, Benjamin did not want to see what utter chaos meant. Slowly he moved, regretting that he had chosen a part of the train where barely anyone seemed to be sitting. But was it not always like that? In the end, he was all alone, staring into the void until they reached King’s Cross Station.

The doors he passed swung open, exposing the dimly lit area that had to be a tunnel the Hogwarts Express usually passed. Why had they paused in the first place, and where did these screams and banging sounds come from? The badger did not know and tried to abandon all his fears. Yet they were always there, digging their claws into his shoulders and breathing against his neck – a breathtaking and all-consuming anxiety Benjamin could never shake off. Some people were meant to be heroes, but Benny was not one of them. He was a coward, scared of his own shadow in the right light. Fingers held onto the door grip for a moment longer before he descended the stairs, sneakers meeting the concrete of the tunnel, gravel crunching underneath his soles as he took two hesitant steps forward. There were no members of the Ministry of Magic, no wands raised to illuminate the tunnel. The boy gulped, and Marbles meowed softly when his fingers dug into the feline’s thick fur.

The dim lights of both the train and the tunnel itself painted shadows on the walls, and Benny could have sworn he had seen people hurry by fast, turning around to try and figure in which direction to walk. He just wanted to be home already and curl up in his bed, but it did not look like this was going to happen any time soon. Instead, he walked forward, suddenly spotting another figure that was about to leave the train. He held his breathe before speeding up his steps, cat clutched to his chest like a shield against all evils of the world as he shook brown curls out of his face – only to stare at the familiar and feared face of Andre Elkins, scarcely brightened by the flickering lights.

Andre was not pleased about the stop that was preventing the students from traveling to London. He wanted to get home, far away from the castle that held moving staircases and ridiculous people. He wanted to be home and playing Quidditch with his older brother - if he was even home. His brows furrowed together and he made a soft irritated noise. Of course, there was no reason for Max to be at the Elkins' family house when he was being a star Quidditch player without Andre. A scowl fell upon the boy's lips at this passing thought, but when exactly wasn't there a scowl on his face. This situation was irritating, to say the least. Why was it that everything in this past year was so irritating and downright crazy? It had all started with the decision his parents had made about the twins transferring to Hogwarts.

His fingers twirled the wand around lightly. There was no doubt going to be reason to use it soon, with all the screaming and loud banging noises all over the place, to say the least. Shouting was happening, panicking students all around the train as they were trying to follow the instructions that had been sent and get to the portkeys that that the Ministry was sending so that they may all get home and able to see their families for the summer. The train certainly hadn't been much fun, getting lost in trying to get out. He always had been bad with new places - just ask his twin, who was sure to tell you, snarky-like, that he needed a map wherever Andre went.

His lips pressed together as he shifted his wand to his teeth, gently holding it in his mouth as he needed to use both hands to heave the train door open. It was stuck, so it took all of the might that the snake had - the little strength that he had in his limbs to begin with - to be able to shove the red thing open. Heaving a sigh, his brow furrowed, Andre finally stepped from the train, his wand moving back to his hand and the other pushing the blue tips away from his green eyes. What a day this was turning out to be already. This was why the students should've been allowed to use portkeys in the first place, rather than riding the wretched train home.

"Lumos," he muttered, irritated at the flickering lights all round him. Who thought it was a great idea to have students wander off where there was going to be trolls and centaurs fighting each other, to begin with? Irritation slipped through his expression once more. This was ridiculous. A sound came from behind him and Andre and he spun around, lifting his wand to see who was coming. A flicker of something - relief maybe? - flooded through him and the boy heaved a soft sigh, "Well, well, well, if isn't it Benny himself. Is that cat going to make a good shield for you?" Being unkind was always a decent way to hide your own fears, wasn't it?

Instinctively, Benjamin flinched as Andre decided to point his wand at him - out of impulse, it seemed, and yet there was always something incredibly threatening about the way the snake was acting. It made Benny more than uncomfortable whenever he was close to the other boy, while at the same time he did not have the courage to speak up against him or simply walk away. He had never had much of a spine, yet Andre had a way with the boy turning into a puppet without any free will at all in his presence. This was not any different, and the badger did not know where to go all by himself, with only Marbles as company. And so it came that the younger boy was still a better ally in this than a cat that could not even speak, no matter how mocking his words were once more and how threatening he was acting towards the boy with the messy, dark curls.

The tunnel was creepy enough, and despite the wand that was raised, Benjamin inched closer to Andre, fingers still dug deeply into his cat’s fur while washed-out eyes stares at the snake through a curtain of curls, panic more than just hinted in them. They were going to die here, and the last person he had been with would be the boy he feared without having an actual reason for it. Maybe it was the way he was always so confident and full of himself, how easily he gave commands without a care and how terrifying he could become in stressful situations - one only had to look at the boat race they had been in, although those memories were blurred for poor Benny: everything was drowned in too much water and the bitter taste of bile.

“It’s not a shield,” he muttered - only to prove his own words lies because he was clinging even harder to his cat until Marbles protested quietly. If only he had been with Rosalie - or Idys even. They would know what to do, because the women in his life always seemed to know what to do, no matter how tricky the situation might be. Instead, he was stuck with his pet and a boy he was scared off, too deep in his own anxiety to even voice how much he needed help. Eventually, finding the Ministry workers would help - eventually, his father would be here to pick him up and get him home before anything worse was going to happen. The boy shuddered, gazing around and wincing as something howled in the distance. Was it just the wind that blew through the tunnel, or something else?

It was a decision by seconds to move Marbles on his arm, holding the cat like a baby that had to burp over his own shoulder, while pale and slender fingers reached out, tugging on Andre’s sleeve. For the second, it did not matter whether the boy would mock him even more, because he was scared and did not know what else to do. “Let’s go,” he whispered, staring down at his shoes because Andre would know what to do, wouldn’t he? There were more sounds of heavy steps and of breaking wood, and they only urged Benjamin to tug a little harder on the snake’s sleeve.

Should have kept the lights off!

Ah, yes, trolls, what wonderful creatures. Known throughout the world because of their large size, aggressive behavior, and, well...incredible stupidity. It was often that wizards compared their brains to that of bugs, and much alike a bug, it came as no surprise that one particular troll saw itself drawn to the dim light of a wand. It had stepped into the tunnel thanks to the promise of food, the scent of terribly scared teenagers resulting to be as delicious as Grandma’s freshly baked cookies. Oh sweet pheromones. And surely they could smell it too, for hygiene was not a priority among forest trolls and there were suspicious chunks of whatever the creature had been eating stuck to it’s bushy green beard.

Quiet voices, tempting smells, and an oh so attractive orb of light.

Crunch went the twigs as it stepped on them with its large two-toed feet, but the creature did not care, as it’s eyes were wide and fixed on the light, taking heavy steps towards it with the stubborn conviction of...a troll. That was when it saw the boys, a large grin revealing yellowed and sharp teeth as it laid eyes on it’s meal. Resembling a slobbering dog, drools fell onto the floor as a hand reached out for the cat (What? Everyone loves a good appetizer, even a troll). The tips of overly dirty fingers attempted to grab onto the feline before giving into the frustration that came with a lack of fine motor skills, a roar thundering through the tunnel as its hands closed into fists, attempting to smash the boy who was holding his snack. Maybe, if they were mush, they would be easier to eat.

(Just like a bug, a rather foul-smelling troll sees itself drawn by the light of Andre’s wand. It tries to make a snack out of dear Marbles, but when it fails to grab her, it decides to try smash Benny into mush instead! What will happen? Will Benjamin meet his tragic end? Find out on the next episode of: ‘Troll In The Tunnel!’ -Available now on Quirrell TV)

Benjamin flinched as though Andre was going to attack him and the snake snorted in laughter slightly - why would he want to waste his time to attack the older boy, even if he was slightly pathetic? It was a waste of energy and time, in Andre's opinion. His eyebrow rose as Benny grabbed onto his arms, a snarky comment on his lips just as things started to change - as a huge sound seemed to shake the tunnel that they were in, that the train had stopped in the middle of. He stepped away from the boy next to him and lifted his wand to see whatever it was that was making the stomping sound.

The light from his wand lit only a small area around the two boys, but it didn't take long to see the huge creature that was coming towards them. Too bad that neither one of them had noticed soon enough to run away before the troll - yes, that's what it was - decided to make a grab for Benjamin, or more specifically, the cat that the boy was holding in his arms. Andre's scowl fell from his face as he realized what was happening - a gut clenching fear rippling through him as the boy stared at the troll. There were spells on the tip of his tongue but in that moment - for the briefest of seconds, the snake seemed stuck. Lost in his own fear - he had been hurtled back down memory lane to a time when he had been stuck against a wall as two huge boys came towards him, his own arms clinging to a loaf of bread much the way that Benjamin was hanging onto his cat.

His heart was pounding faster, the heart beat in his ears drowning out the yelling of the other students around them or even outside of the tunnel. They seemed to be trapped inside of the tunnel, just the way that Andre had been backed up against a wall when the older boys had come to take the loaf of bread from him. The similarities were striking for the boy - yet at the same time, he was much older and this time, he had magic on his side to aid him - if he could remember that the wand in his hand could help them get out of this situation. For the moment, it was like Andre was frozen in his tracks and this was not a good feeling at all.

The cat made a horrible yowling sound along with a hiss at the troll as the creature tried to make a grab at it - it was just enough to make Andre snap out of his temporary immobility, though. His signature spell came to his lips the fastest and he shouted, "Alarte Ascendare!" Andre didn't know that it would work against a troll, nor was the boy about to stick around and find out the consequences for it not working. His free hand grabbed Benjamin and he yelled, "Run!" They needed to get out of there, and they needed to get out of there quickly.

Too caught up in the distress of the moment, Benjamin did not even notice that Andre had been snorting at his behaviour - and even if he had, it would not have bothered him too much. The snake most likely had his reasons to dislike him or mock him, and there was no way Benny was going to stand up for himself right now while something big and loud was approaching, cracking twigs as it moved forward - straight towards the two lost boys, as there was no other way to call them right now. The badger shivered, and once he could see the troll in the light that came from the train and from Andre’s wand, he felt like his heart was sinking in his pants, skipping several beats. A troll. If there had been any colour left in the boy’s face, it was fading now as the giant creature reached for Marbles. Washed-out eyes widened in utter shock, and he could not even move away from the troll, too stunned to even defend one of the things he loved the most in his life.

Never before had he felt like such a coward and so aware of it, while greyish fingers reached for his pet. The feeling deep down in his guts resembled the one he had experienced while watching a horror movie with his mother during the holidays, as she had insisted on keeping a TV in the house. Marrying a wizard had not exactly thrown her out of her ways, and despite having a toddler to deal with, she always tried to make time for Benjamin was at home, smothering the boy in hugs and asking what he would like to do - although they always did what she suggested, because Benny had little preferences. It was also the same dreadful emotion that came over him the one time he rode a ghost train on the fair - the fear of the dark meddling with the anticipation to see what lingered in the dark, twitching so hard whenever another figure emerged out of the darkness that his whole body had been hurting from the tension afterwards.

This was different - this was the reality of the moment, a real troll threatening their lives while all Benjamin could do was to close his eyes and tighten his grip around Marbles. If he could not do anything, he would at least die with his cat - that was the only sacrifice he could give right now, anyway. It was Andre’s voice paired with the sudden growling of the troll that dragged him out of his stupor, and finally, the badger managed to take a step back and stare at the younger boy beside him, his heart beating hard and fast in his chest while he could hear the blood racing through his veins in his ears - sounds of war only audible for him, as it seemed, while Marbles screeched and dug his claws into the boy’s arms.

Run. Benjamin was good with orders, yet not good enough as it seemed. It took him a few moments more to realise what he had been told to do - and paired with the drag on his arm, he finally nodded as he sped up, running along with Andre while the troll collided with the ground. The earth shaked for a moment and the train vibrated - even more so as the creature got up and howled like a dragon, each step he took a small earthquake as he moved to follow his snack that was so clearly running away from him in this moment.

Time seemed to slow a little as the two boys ran, the troll staggering. The spell probably hadn't done exactly what it was supposed to, since flying trolls was probably not in Andre's magic capacity as a fifth year student. Still, it had bought enough time for the two boys and the cat that Benjamin had to be able to get a good distance away before the troll fell - a second time. Was this troll tripping over it's own feet? The whole tunnel shook again, the sound magnificent as it echoed off the stone walls that were surrounding them. It was so close to them that Andre could smell the nastiness of the creature as they moved away from it; yet it was far enough that when it landed on the ground, it didn't hit them - though Andre felt his foot hit a rock at the unexpected shaking trembles of the earth beneath his feet, tripped and fell.

His heart was pumping blood through his body in a way that Andre only enjoyed when he was playing Quidditch - not out running bullies - or in this case, trolls. His breath was heavier and as he shifted to move, pain sprang up from his ankle. The boy groaned and turned his body to face the giant creature that was now laying on it's stomach in the middle of the tunnel. His brain was finally aware that there was yelling and screaming from students around them, but there was no connection between any of the voices and someone that Andre might know. He used his left hand to help position his foot, taking a moment before trying to get up. Oh good. There was pain, but he could stand on it and put some weight. Andre had once heard that as long as you could put weight on a foot or a leg, it wasn't broken. Still, it hurt like a he couldn't believe and the scowl that was present on his face normally was even worse now.

Andre held his wand up to the troll, still backing away. There was fear evident in his green orbs that were usually full of mischief, but now was not the time to be showing such a thing. He was distinctly aware of blood trickling from down his arm and the boy glanced at it only a moment before turning his attention back to the troll. It didn't seem to be moving - and yet, Andre wasn't about to turn his back; just in case he needed to cast another spell at the thing to be able to get away. What was that saying? Never turn your back on your enemies? Surely it applied to trolls as well.

Brow furrowing, he looked around for Benjamin, who thankfully, had started to run as Andre had and the boy didn't need to do something like save the older, more pathetic boy from the trolls clutches. It really had been a close one for them both. As Andre looked to Benjamin and started to say something, the troll got up and started heading towards them once more. Two falls and this troll couldn't stay down? What the hell? Andre couldn't even run anymore, as it was. "Alarte Ascendare!" he screamed out, hoping that the troll would go down for good this time - instead he watched in both horror and fascination as his spell missed and his a pile of rocks and they started their decent downwards from the side of the tunnel.

Benjamin did not know how many times he had wondered why he just could not be a normal boy without a single grain of magic in his bones, a boy who did not have to go to boarding school to learn the techniques of magic and a boy who did not have to run through a dark tunnel because he was being attacked by goddamn trolls. It was a miracle that he still had the nerve to think about such things while breathing became increasingly hard, panic constricting his airways as he was running with his cat clutched against his chest, barely feeling the pain of Marbles’ claws any more. Panic was always a sensation that flooded over every other feelings or thought - like thick syrup, it was poured over his mind and slowed everything down while his body was merely functioning, no longer ruled by his brain. It was not a pleasant feeling, yet one he had grown used to over the years - often finding himself on the edge of panicking even when no trolls were involved. How strange that in this very moment, he was thinking of his little sister at home, quietly praying that she would never show any signs of magic to spare her a fate like this one.

It was the sound of a smaller body colliding with the ground that made him pause, looking over his shoulder only to see Andre on the ground - most likely because he had tripped and fallen. This was bad - this was more than bad, because Benny had no idea how to defend himself or the other boy from the troll that was not defeated yet. But Andre got to his feet all by himself, and Benny simply continued running, because it was clearly the smartest decision he could make in this very moment. The earth kept shaking, and screams from other students still echoed through the tunnel, being thrown from the wall to the train and back again, hitting ground and ceiling alike. It was a nightmare that refused to end, and even the repeated spell the snake had casted only seemed to help for so long before the troll got to his giant feet again and followed them as if they were the most delicious snacks it had ever seen.

Did trolls even eat children or was it just a myth? In this moment, Benjamin could neither tell nor did he know, because he was busy running, swallowing down the bile of fear that kept rising in his throat. Marbles meowed - no, screamed at him, but the badger merely adjusted his tom cat’s position in his arms and kept running for his dear life. Behind them, the troll roared, pebbles on the ground trembling dangerously. There had to be another spell, one that actually silenced the beast that was following them. Small fingers that were shaking just as badly as the rest of his body reached for his wand nonetheless. There was a time for cowards and a time for heroes - and while Benjamin usually belonged to the former, he wanted to belong to the latter today. All he needed was a spell that would be powerful enough - and wasn’t it the problem, given he did was not the best wizard?

Sometimes it was easier to act instead of thinking, and he made half of a turn, raising his wand as he yelled with unknown noise and strength “Bombarda!” at the troll. Honestly, Benny did not even want to see what kind of damage his spell did, he just sped up even more - everything only a blur of colours and sounds while he could only hope the troll would finally stop running after the two of them. In the distance, he could see the figures with glowing wands in their hands - Ministry of Magic workers - and he had the slightest hope that his father would be there as well.
