Save for the sound of the merrily crackling fireplace, the room that the young woman sat alone in was completely quiet. The fire was a bit too warm, but it made the girl feel warmth from within and so she had cracked the window to let the cooler evening breeze trickle in. The room was small tonight at her request, as anything bigger continued to feel empty. And feeling empty, whether in a room or emotionally, was to be avoided as much as possible. All that adorned the space was the fireplace, the window, and an overstuffed sofa with various types of pillows thrown around to make it feel as comfortable as possible. At first glance, it appeared to be a very cozy setting, a vibe that Kiska only continued to embody dressed her sleepwear and the blanket that sat across her lap as she sat on the floor, back pressed to the couch. To someone who knew her better, or spent any additional time looking her over, they would a heavily cracked surface.

Shifting a bit, Kiss allowed a curtain of her hair to fall forward, in effect shielding her face from the doorway. As eight drew nearer, the tension in her body continued to grow until it almost felt as though every muscle were vibrating. She had never known such a reaction before and, truthfully, didn’t know what to do with it. Perhaps this was why some people paced around a room when they were waiting for something or weren’t sure what to say or do in a particular situation. Nervous energy. Wasn’t that what it was called? But her nervous energy had coiled inwards and was displayed only by the way that her fingers kept playing with a loose thread in her lap. Over and over they wound it around before loosening and starting over again. Her gaze dipped from the flames to the fabric covering her legs, fingers running along it for probably the hundredth or so time. It had been one from home that she had stowed away in her trunk on her way back to the castle; it had provided her comfort then and continued to provide her comfort now. It just couldn't prevent the thoughts swirling in her head.

Had this been a good idea? Had this been a bad idea? What would she end up saying to him? And what would he say to her? Would he leave?

Questions plagued her mind and, having tried very hard to either ignore or address so many questions in the months prior, the desire to flee was springing forward. She needed to leave before he got here and continue to avoid him and Liam and everyone else in the corridors and classrooms. That was surely the answer and surely the way to keep things flowing. Dutifully, the side of the girl’s brain that had prompted her to leave that basket on JR’s bed kicked in. More than being tired of the questions, Kiska was tired of feeling alone. That, too, was an entirely new feeling and it was certainly not welcome. While some friends had come and gone in her lifetime, she had always been able to count on a select few and two in particular. She didn’t want to hide from them anymore. Well, she did. Because to face them meant to face everything all over again. Or, for the first time.

Her fingers went to play with the ends of her hair and the lioness shook her head to try and think of something else that didn’t make her heart race. No easy feat, when the thought of JR on a good day had that same effect on her. Their relationship had started to turn a corner into new and uncharted territory when she had left, territory that Kiska very much wanted to continue to explore with him. But what if he had found someone new in the time she had been gone, certain that she wouldn’t be returning? It weren’t as though he could be blamed – while Kiss was willing to wait forever for those she loved, she didn’t expect the same from others. Perhaps that was why she had been so hesitant to partake in any sort of romances previously. Love. It was such a powerful emotion and she distinctly remembered telling the Gryffindor boy that she loved him, too. Even the memory now made her pulse quicken in her veins. There was no question that the girl had meant it then and it was still true now.

Shaking her head again, the first attempt to think of something different insufficient, blue eyes again turned to the fire. Her expression was blank but they gave away the turmoil within as her mind jumped from one idea to the next. Had he liked the treats inside the basket? Growing up, food had always been a way for her large family to come together. To share news of their day. To share time with each other. To make each member feel comforted with foods they loved and filled their bellies full to bursting. So it went without saying that when words and actions eluded the Gryffindor, her fallback was always to spend time in the kitchens to create something, anything, for any particular person in her life that may have needed a reminder that there was someone out there who cared for them. Or, in other cases, as a pick-me-up if they were having a rough time of things. Taking the time to hand-make something for someone else was a far more personal way to reach out to them and, so far, those that were on the receiving end had seemed appreciative of her efforts.

Kiss wasn’t sure if JR had doubted, or was still in doubt of, the authenticity of the note she had left with that basket. If the roles were reversed, the young woman knew she would be highly questionable of it as well. But it would be very hard for him to doubt the basket with pastries that she had left with it. That sort of action had her name all over it, and she could only hope that her fellow Gryffindor would remember that. Short of accosting him in a crowded corridor – something that she absolutely wanted to avoid because there would be no privacy for talking – there weren’t any other gestures that had come to her mind to put an end to the sightings across the grounds. If this chance slipped through her fingers, there was no telling what that would mean for the two. There were no more next times.

Had it really been months since the last time he had seen her?

His piercing green eyes roamed over the basket of goodies that was left on his bed. His fingers tentatively took the note in the hard fingertips. His tongue darted out to lick his lips, which were suddenly dry. His body shook ever so slightly - even if he only on the inside. Gingerly, he sat down on the edge of his bed, heart beat matching his racing mind - trying to figure out a possible solution to the puzzle at hand. It was crazy that all of a sudden she was reaching out to him; yet, the basket full of apple turnovers amongst other favorite things - this was no trick. It was a new development, one the lion did not exactly understand. JR ran his free hand though his hair, trying to think of what could have caused months of silence. None came to him.

He sat there for ages, staring at the parchment; at the looping of her handwriting, every letter carefully carved onto the paper. Memories flooded the young man - from the very first moment JR had met her when he was eleven years old, to curling up in the common room, to meals spent together, playing in the snow, watching Disney movies one summer, to walking away from her when the pain had been too much - when he had been spelled so he couldn't speak of the pain he was in. Or at least, JR had tried to tell a professor once and when his tongue had gotten to the top of his mouth and he had been forced to spend three days in the hospital wing, the boy assumed it would have been that way with anyone.

The hours passed; his roommates came and went, giving him odd looks. The sun went down and still, JR made very little moved to get up from his bed. He stared into space; he got out an old scrap book and looked at the pictures of the three friends - his two former best friends and himself, something made and given to him by one of them at the beginning of fifth year as they had been trying to make him get out of his funk. Probably Kiss. Liam didn't do stuff like that. But still, there were pages with his handwriting as well, so the eagle must've helped for parts of it. His eyes filled with unshed tears - and then, suddenly, it was time to go.

His footsteps were quiet in the corridors as the young moved through them, dressed in a black sweatshirt and faded jeans. Normally by this time of the day, JR had sweats on rather than jeans, but when seeing the love of your life for the first time in months, one needed to look at least halfway decent. JR squared back his shoulders and mentally put walls around his heart - an old habit he hated that he had at the moment, but at the same time, wasn't quite past yet. The lion breathed deeply once, twice, three times, before opening the door that had mysteriously appeared in front of him where the Room of Requirement was.

He stood, the door closing behind him, his fingers stuffed in his sweatshirt pocket as Chance peeked out from the hole. He scratched the kitten's head, swallowing hard, the smell of a fire hitting his nostrils, the brightly lit room surround him with warm. These were not things JR paid attention to as he spoke softly to the kitten, "Shh, you're okay." Looking from his pet to the actual inhabitant of the room, his heart started to pound. A lump formed in his throat even as a sickly feeling settled in his stomach. Yet, JR was more healed now than the last time they had met, was more healed than he had been in years since first enduring his mother's abuse. So much so, his thoughts and feelings didn't focus on running, or even about anything close to himself. Instead they focused on the beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed doe who was in his direct line of sight.

"Kiska," he breathed. "You're alive. What happened to you?"

She heard it. The sound of a footstep just outside the door, the creak of the old hinges as it swung inward to allow whomever was on the other side to enter. Though of course the girl knew precisely who it was that was entering. It felt like ages before the hinges ceased to make noise and the door latched back in to place. In hearing it catch, Kiska knew he was in the room with her and there was no time to further contemplate running away. It was time to face JR and at least some of what she had left behind and had missed so dearly. But in facing it, would she be able to reclaim it? Or was it already too far beyond her grasp, never to fall back within her reach again? Sucking in a deep breath to both steel herself and try and get rid of the lump that was starting to form there, the girl tucked the wavy curtain she had previously let loose back behind her ear and turned to look to the boy that had finally joined her.

For someone that had rebelled against the ideas of intimacy and vulnerability before, Kiss had never felt quite so vulnerable as she did then as she met his astounded green gaze. It struck her as cheesy even as the thought passed her mind, but ‘drinking him in’ was a good way to describe the way her eyes roved over him now – it might, after all, be one of the last times they were on potentially good terms for awhile. Her own gaze wandered, noticing how he filled out both his sweatshirt and his jeans, as well as the companion that was tucked away in to his pocket. It made her briefly wonder where Shadow was off to on this night before another thought cut in and gave herself an internal finger-wagging. Focus on now. Focus on JR. Certainly, the girl didn’t mind focusing on the boy. He was handsome and she had the fleeting, irrational thought that she wanted to claim his as hers. But she couldn’t.

So the lioness gave the boy a smile that she knew still didn’t quite touch her eyes and brighten them in the way they were both accustomed to. It was an improvement from where it had been but had quite some ways to go before it was back to where it used to be. Shifting over on the carpet amid the mass of pillows and her blanket, her gaze briefly dipped to the kitten before back to JR’s face. “Hey, babe,” she started, a bit haltingly. Her voice was on the hoarse side, too, from a lack of using it. You didn’t tend to talk much when you spent all your free time with your cat or writing essays. “It’s not really such a long story… Not really a good one, either. Would you please join me?”

So Kiss had been wrong. Now she had never felt so vulnerable as she did then, reaching out for him both physically and emotionally in the hopes he would reach for her, too, and join her on the floor.

How many nights had they sat here or in the Gryffindor common room, surrounded by blankets and a fire in front of them? Flames licked at the logs and the young man turned to the heat source in the room. Spring was coming; it was so warm in the Room of the Requirement that Kiss had even cracked a window. Brow furrowing, he shrugged to himself to dismiss the confusion as he let Chance out of his pocket. The grey kitten with a black stripe down the side of his body sauntered over to the girl and with a soft noise, plopped down on the blanket at her feet. Well at least someone was comfortable. JR's sweatshirt came off as he laughed softly at his pet before slipping off his shoes and coming to plop down next to the young woman.

Somehow, it was easy to slip back into his comfortable state - this was Kiss, not anyone else in the world could make him comfortable with just a pat of her hand and a carefully directed smile his way. Of course, flutters settled into his stomach now; but this was better than the sick feeling that she was going tell him good-bye for good. His piercing green eyes went to the flames licking the logs, reds, oranges and yellows swirling all together to make a beautiful site. It reminded JR of the sunrise or sunset - he couldn't decide which one the lion liked best. Both, for different reasons, he supposed. The start of a new day with the sun rise, the peacefulness that came with the sunset. He loves watching them both and the array of colors was a sight he would never stop loving; much like the girl seated beside him.

JR shifted, picking up Chance and placing him on his stomach - of course now, the young man was shirtless. In the company of those he was comfortable with, or actually, anytime it was even decently warm, JR got rid of shirts. To him, they were itchy and pointless - especially when the scars he had on his body were covered by glamour charms. There was never a time that his skin was not covered by magic on his back and torso, because JR never knew when he would want to take his shirt off and he wasn't going to deal with that headache.

Not that it truly mattered, Kiss knew about the scars - but still, most of the world judged upon appearance and therefore, it wasn't worth the risk. It wasn't worth the stares and the apprehension that would feel people's eyes, the same way it had filled doctor's eyes or others' before Kilsha had oblivated their memories when they saw JR's skin. It was just better this way. His fingers brushed through the soft fur of his kitten, glancing to the girl beside him. "This is Chance," he said, in way of introduction. "He was given to me towards the end of last summer by a Ravenclaw who thought I needed my own kitten when Erik's kept following me around."

He was filling the air with words, filling the silence with things that were unimportant because he wanted everything back to normal - back to a time when they could laugh and be happy together no matter what was happening in the world around them. JR longed for this in every fiber of his being. He gave her a small smile as he settled back against the couch, continuing to stroke Chance's fur as he let the silence settle before them to give her a chance to explain this time, to give her a chance to talk. After all, isn't that what he had done in this very room, so long ago, before exposing the scars to her?

A heat that had nothing to do with the fire crept in to the young woman’s face as JR discarded his sweatshirt without seemingly a second thought. It did not slip her notice that he was with his glamor charms but that would have to be another topic for later, or even another day. Her gaze slipped to the fire and, as the room seemed to read what she was thinking, the flames died down a bit. While it was growing warmer outside, there were days that were still cooler than she might have liked and fires were just so cozy. Inviting. Not to mention the fact that the two of them had met by firelight many times before and that had played a huge part in what she had desired for this evening. Looking back to the boy that had now joined her without so much as a second though, Kiska was filled with such relief that the only thing she wanted to do was fling her arms around him in a hug and potentially never let go. There had been an instance before, she recalled, where she had done that in the lake and he had kissed her. That, too, renewed the blush and the curtain fell once more to spare her that line of questioning.

Focus on now. Focus on JR.

Composing her thoughts into something far less embarrassing, Kiss shifted on her knees to face him, letting the blanket sit forgotten on the floor for the time being. The carpet, mercifully, was soft and plush and made sitting either on her behind or on her knees not only bearable, but comfortable. The way to tell him everything had had much time to go through revisions this afternoon – but not a single one of those revisions came to her mind. Instead, the girl was just watching her friend as he stroked his kitten and looked to her. Just watching him as he tried to take it slow for her to ease in to whatever needed to happen next. The years of friendship had enabled him to know what she needed when she needed it, and her the same for him. She could have kissed him right then for the thought but, again, that was another topic for later on.

“I was back home for all these months that I’ve been gone,” Kiss started, clearing her throat to make her voice sound a little stronger to her own ears. There hadn’t been much chatter or laughter or really anything for her in that timeframe and sitting on the floor right next to her was the opportunity to start on the path to change it. “Mum hadn’t been doing well… And then she passed one afternoon.” Her brow furrowed as the words left her mouth – it still felt the same as the detached way she had gone about cleaning up around the house a few weeks afterwards. A moment of disassociation hit the Gryffindor then; this still wasn’t entirely a reality for her yet. She still hadn’t fully processed. It was all very matter of fact and then the emotional part would be able to be overlooked until they didn’t feel as raw and then there might even be no need for any tears to be shed. But of course, that wasn’t how emotions worked.

Shifting away to sit back against the couch, Kiss swallowed against the lump in her throat again. She didn’t want to cry, not right now, and not in front of JR. She needed to continue to be strong and be one to lend an ear to him or Liam for how they might be feeling after her absence. Once they were all sorted out, then she could have her own private time in her dormitory, or an abandoned classroom nobody liked to be in, or even in the stables on an afternoon where nobody else bothered to come out. Drawing her knees in to her chest, she somewhat lamely tried to continue on with an explanation. “So, ah, it’s been a hell of a time.”

His fingers froze in Chance's fur, his piercing green eyes on the girl in front of him. JR watched her as she spoke. The kitten must've sensed that there was something brewing between the two humans because with a soft 'mew' he got up and stretched, leaving JR's lap and wandered away. This left the young man with no where to put his hands as he processed the information, no where but his thighs, tapping them lightly as he watched her. It only took moments before the lion sat straighter, before his mind was racing, before memories came flashing. In seconds, JR had moved towards the girl and wrapped his arms around her, hugging to her him the best he could because Kiss was wrapped up in a tight ball.

His breathing was slightly faster, his first instinct, as it had been for the last few years was to run, but his arms were already wrapped around the woman he loved; the one who had been his best friends from first year and then JR had fallen for the young woman. Now was not the time to dwell on this, however. Kiska needed him and unlike when he had been focused on himself, JR would be there for her. He knew what it was like to lose a parent. The lion had spent years running and trying to cope with the pain of that and receiving an awful one in exchange for the one he had lost. He had made grave errors of judgement in his decisions; but this was easy. It was easy for the lion to choose to be present for the ones he loved.

JR had been there whenever he could - he and Erik had become friends after JR had half carried him to this very room. Erik had been drunk and it had been the start of a give and take relationship - one that JR found himself easily participating in. When he didn't think of putting himself in front of people to be vulnerable in front of, it was easier to be present and engaged for them. For Kiss? That was always going to be easy. He would always be there for her. No matter what. After all, hadn't it been said already he wanted to marry the girl?

His body shifted lightly from his stance, finally letting her go. Shifting from his knees, he sat back on his legs, voice soft. "Kiss, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I'm here, okay?" His eyes were shining with compassion, his fingers squeezed her forearm lightly. He couldn't imagine watching his father pass away. As much as it had been a shock that he was never going to see Joe Zerner again, JR hadn't been there for the end. He hadn't seen his father week and hurt. Still, he knew the pain of losing a loved one and he knew the horrors of going through it alone. "I'm here, Kiss. I'm here." Nothing else mattered in this moment than to break through whatever wall forming and have her understand this.

It was really hard not to let everything that had been bottled up the last several months come rushing forth all at one time as JR’s strong arms slipped around her body. This wasn’t like the polite hugs that had been exchanged between family members as though they were enough to console a person whose world had been turned upside down. No, the circle of his arms brought with it much more understanding and comfort and the promise of more to come than Kiss had thus far experienced. He, too, had lost the only parent he had known and had endured all of it alone. Of course, that had been his choice, and only her persistence had helped to get them back around to this point. But he very much knew how she was feeling right now and, so far, wanted to be there for her to unload all her thoughts on, whatever they may be. The only problem was that the girl didn’t know how to let them out without letting them all out. And she just wasn’t ready to do that.

She also wasn’t ready for him to pull away so quickly. Somewhere in her mind yelled for him to come back and tried to verbalize it, but the words stuck in Kiska’s throat. There was actually a lot stuck in her throat right now and it was making the concept of talking feel like a far-off possibility. Her vision blurred and she shifted a bit to use the neck of her old t-shirt to wipe at her eyes, fingers getting momentarily tangled in the necklace she now always wore. This very boy had given it to her, although Kiss didn’t expect him to remember that. It had been such a long time ago… Blinking the moisture away as much as she could in order to look at him without the edges becoming blurry, the girl took in a deep breath as though it were going to do anything by way of steadying the volcano that was simmering below the surface. One word or action or even thought could make it erupt and there was no telling how long it would erupt for.

Shifting around, Kiss grabbed the blanket that she had let lie alone on the floor for the brief period of time. The fabric was soft as ever to the touch, used many times in the Ferdenova household. Tugging it to her again to draw what comfort from it that she could, her next words simply weren’t coming. Hold me sounded entirely too needy and the young woman just couldn’t bring herself to say those words, even if that was exactly what she wanted. It had a ring of desperation or vulnerability, concepts that her mind would always rebel against. Clearing her throat to try again, the Gryffindor nodded to the couch and got to her feet. “Will you sit with me?” she asked, realizing the question was essentially parroting what had been asked of him earlier to join her on the floor. If only she were better at this. How did you say that you needed physical contact when that wasn’t something that you had ever specifically requested before and had only taken in small doses?

The couch, as with the rest of the room, was incredibly soft and comfortable, as inviting as an inanimate object could be. It was set deep, too, the seats extending enough that Kiska’s feet dangled over the edge if she sat back far enough. Spreading the blanket out over her lap with her eyes downcast, her movements in doing so displaying the tension she felt in her body, the lioness finally looked up and reached for the lion again. Her eyes were bright with the struggle not to let tears get going; she was trying so hard to hold all the cracks together but it might as well have been trying to scoop water out of a sinking boat with your hands. It was just a matter of time before it sank and you either sank with it or swam like hell. Which would it end up being?

But JR was here, and she needed him. All the support and understanding he could give, she needed. More than that, she wanted it. Someone that could see you at both your best and worst times and still want to spend all those times and more with you was always worth holding on to; that was one of the reasons that the stubborn girl had held on to him all those years when he had been so hell-bent on pushing both her away in spite of advice not to, that it wouldn’t ever be the same. Maybe it wouldn’t be – but the difference that had come of it was shaping up to be for the better.

JR stood, watching the young woman who had captured his heart long ago. His piercing green eyes gathered together the picture of her the lion had in his mind - tired, sad, hurting, and his heart raced a little with the thought that she had asked him to come and be here for her in her time of need. He couldn't screw this up as the young man had before - walked away from the lioness and their mutual friend. Where was Liam tonight? Did he know that Kiska was hurting? That she needed people to lean on in her time of need? Or had he been the one holding her up since she had returned to Hogwarts and now this was JR's chance?

The questions fell away like shattered glass because in the end, they didn't truly matter. What mattered now was that they were here, in this room where the two Gryffindors had been together so many times before and Kiss was hurting. He couldn't offer to take her pain away or to heal her pain with a simple spell, but he could sit with her, he could hold her. With a small thought to the room, the couch was transfigured - into a bed, where they could both lay down. He climbed onto the soft mattress, shifting to gently tug the girl closer to him as he laid down on his left side, facing her. His skin prickled as he touched her - an electric shock the young man knew was due to the fact that he loved her and felt strongly towards Kiska. His eyes moved over her, asking her what words could not, to not only sit with him, but to lay down with him, to let JR hold her as though all walls were down around them once more.

A soft breath escaped the young man's lips, his piercing green gaze looking over her shoulder and around the room as memories of them snuggling together over the course of the last seven years seemed to blend together - where had the time gone? The laughter and the warmth of being in each other's arms, the teasing they had endured over the years about being a couple even as they were only friends. His lips curved, trying to form a smile for the woman he loved and it was a sad attempt, a futile thing - except that at the same time, he was just so happy to see her.

"I'm so glad you're here, babe," the words rolled off his tongue without a second thought, his fingers moving to brush hair from her forehead. "I'm here, Kiska. I'll hold you as long as you need me to. Forever, if you let me." The words afirmed the love, in his own head, he could only hope that she felt the viberation come from them as well. That somehow through the fog and the haze of the emotions she was sure to be engulfed in, Kiss could hear his words, feel the sincerity, and know that he wasn't going anywhere, this time.

The couch the young woman had been perched upon was abruptly switched in to a bed, as soft and as plush as one might have wanted it to be. Having been leaning into the couch, the absence of the support against her back caused Kiss to flop backwards into the sheets with some sort of startled sound slipping from her mouth. Not that she minded – the sheets were soft against her skin and the bed provided just the right amount of give and support. The room was going all-out tonight in terms of cozy and comfortable, for which Kiska was quite glad. Turning her head, her eyes rested on the boy as he crawled on to the bed towards her. Admittedly, her heartrate picked up and in realizing this, a flush crept in to her cheeks. Hopefully JR would just attribute it to something else entirely or, better yet, not even take notice. How had the girl missed all of these signs and signals before? Had she really been so blind not to realize that her emotions in regards to this particular boy were far removed from friendship and indeed ran much deeper? All of the books she read, and not one of them had actually helped in identifying in herself the same feelings that seemed so blatantly obvious in the protagonists. Perhaps you really shouldn’t compare yourself or your situations to those in books. Now there was a thought.

He was tugging her closer now, though letting her make the decision as to how much closer she wanted to be. Grateful for this, Kiss didn’t move in further just yet. The setting felt more intimate, now, than it had moments before. In spite of knowing that wasn’t the intent, a small seedling of uncertainty crept in. Should she move? Should the bed transform back in to a couch? Should she go back to sitting on the floor? Should she just settle in with him like she would have in times before? Why did emotions have to complicate things so thoroughly? Could they just be turned off for awhile? If you didn’t think it was actually possible to have about a fifty questions running through your head at one time, Kiska was here to prove you wrong. So much self-doubt sprang to the surface as she watched the lion, though his gaze was elsewhere, flickering around the room as though thinking of other things. Good. Perhaps he wouldn’t notice the flash of panic that had taken a second to reside on her face before she rubbed her eyes to both distract from it and give her a second to compose herself. It was just JR.

Except it hadn’t ever been just JR. They had done a lot of growing up together since their first year when they became friends, seeing each other through the bad times and sharing the good times with one another too. Detentions, classes, trips out to the lake or even the Forest, when they thought they were pretty hardcore twelve-year-olds… Sharing the same House had meant more nights that they could spend by the common room fire together, when they weren’t trying to sneak around to the kitchens or some off on some other adventure that may or may not have been perfectly safe. He would let her blow off steam when she needed to, usually about a bad mark in Potions and how the cauldron wasn’t really that burnt anyway and it looked better now besides. Or she would help him to get mended up when he was out flying around on that stick with some twigs attached that she still thought was a sport that just actively invited trouble. For years, they had been the sounding board for one another and had grown so close, understanding on a deeper level what made the other tick. And then those years where he withdrew had come and oh, how Kiska had missed it. Had missed him. There were no more common room fires, there was no more waking him in the dead of night for an abrupt midnight wandering because she couldn’t sleep… It was all gone, just like that.

Focus on now. Focus on JR.

Well JR was here now, and he was making it very clear that he had no intention of going anywhere else. He was watching her now, his green eyes laced with concern as they watched her own. Her blue ones were considerably less clear than his, blurring quickly without time to make it them stop. The lump that had been present since before the boy had even entered the room grew stronger and tears that she had been trying to build a dam to hold back burst through, the pressure that they had placed on her too strong to continue to fight against. Before he could continue to study her face, or so the lioness hoped, she moved towards him, tucking her head in to his chest and using her blanket to press her face in to while she cried. Too long had she spent trying to be strong for others – for her own self too, in a way – and it had taken its toll. The solid form and warmth that JR emanated as his arms slid around her was all that she needed in that moment as a few years’ worth of frustration and grief came out and mingled in with the more recent loss and even relief that she felt in knowing that not only did she have Liam, but she had JR back too.

[r] for sexual feelings implied

She pressed her face to his bare chest and within moments it was wet from her tears - not that the young man minded. At this point, the only thing JR did was shift and pull her closer, make it so that they were both laying down, her mostly tucked into his body. His arms were wrapped around her in a tight embrace, trying to let her know he was not going anywhere. From this position, JR could smell the sweet scent of her strawberry shampoo he realized in that very moment he had missed a lot. His fingers ran down the length of her back, pressing in on points where the lion thought he remembered where Kiss held her tension, his gaze going back to the flickering flames in the fireplace.

The colors swirled together to make a blaze swirl. Every so often a snap, crackle, pop, could be heard from the wood - a sparkle might fly up, but he was sure the fireplace had magic surrounding it so that a spark would never quite fly out of the fireplace. Just one little piece of information he had learned over the years from living at Hogwarts. There was many things the young man had learned over the years, living at the magic school, but at that very moment the pieces he cared about most had to do with the lioness who was crying in his arms.

The sound filled his ears and tore at his heart - but he didn't mve. He didn't try to comfort her with words, he knew there were no words to be said. However long the young woman had been holding it in - and it was clear that Kiss had been holding back a while - she needed to let all the pain out. Who had been there when JR had cried over his father? Who had been their when he had cried over his brother. There hadn't been a soul - and that was by his choice. However lost and upset Kiss felt at this moment, JR was absolutely determined his friend would not feel alone and have to deal with this pain without anyone holding her. He had been there, done that. He wasn't going to let her fall into the trap. It was very deep and dark hole.

His fingers reached and searched for the pillow above him and tucks his head under it. Lifting the fingers from her back, he pulled a sheet up over her. They could do this all night. Stay here, in this position. It was warm, comfortable - perfect, even. Sure, he was holding her as she cried but at the same time. there was no place else JR would rather be. There was not thought in his mind that this was where he should be. Except that there was also a burning desire starting to course through him. One that he wanted to welcome, but now was definitely not the time for. No, it was not - and his body was about to betray him. This was not good. How would he ever explain this to the girl he was holding? A lump formed and JR swallowed hard, a flush starting to heat his neck as his thoughts raced for any type of solution. Think of Chance. Cats always did the trick, right? Wrong. Oh, so very, very wrong.

It wasn’t too terribly long before the swirling thoughts had a moment to settle back, not demanding such harsh attention from the girl who possessed them. Kiss started to quiet then, her breathing going from the more jagged breaths that it had taken on to something more normal, more even. She didn’t move yet, not wanting to shift in the hold JR had on her. There was a feeling of security that had settled with it, a feeling that there wasn’t anything that need trouble her at this particular moment. It wasn’t necessarily a feeling that she could recall having before and she couldn’t help but to revel in it. Wrapped up with him and the blankets now, there wasn’t a single place that Kiska could have imagined wanting herself to be instead. No other place would be able to ease the worries that had plagued her as quickly as he had, would have given her exactly what was needed in this case: just silence. Just understanding. He hadn’t tried to talk about the thoughts or feelings she had been running from, he hadn’t tried to ask more questions. He hadn’t tried to push for more than she could give. This was part of the understanding that the lioness had missed so dearly and to have it back in this serious time of need was indescribable.

Taking some time to hopefully let her face come back from the red splotchiness that befell most people when they had a moment, Kiss pulled back from his chest a little, tilting her head to look to him and offer a half smile. It probably hadn’t been much fun just lying there while a good friend cried, but JR seemed to have taken it like a champ. Her head still rested on his arm and so she didn’t yet have much need for a pillow; he was taking being something of a lounge for her in stride as well, and she made a mental note to thank him with another something from the kitchens. Doing so had clearly worked for her last time. “Thanks, babe. I didn’t really intend to go off a little like that,” she shook her head, gaze dipping away from his face for a moment as she took in their positioning. They were a bit of a tangle at the moment, between their limbs and the blankets. But he was so warm and there was no desire to be outside the circle of his arms for very long. Moving back in closer, Kiss tugged the sheet up for them both, nuzzling his neck lightly, lips accidentally grazing against his skin. There was a purely masculine smell about JR that the girl hadn’t yet placed. It, too, worked to calm and console.

She tilted her head back again to look to this boy that held so much meaning, eyes tracing his features before her fingers came to lightly follow their path. His jaw was strong, just a little rough with stubble. His eyes were her favorite shade of green – perhaps her favorite shade because of his eyes. And his lips looked as enticing as they had the last time she’d really taken a look at them. Not that Kiska had many kisses to compare it to, but they were pretty good at that particular activity, from what she could remember. Now wasn’t really the time to be thinking about testing them out for a reminder; her eyes were probably still a little red, her hair was probably a bit tousled, and she had just been crying. But they were so inviting… was she leaning in?

Eventually, the tears stopped and the young man returned the smile. Of course he saw the red blotchiness the crying hard left on the girl, saw the tear stains on her cheeks, even felt the wetness drying on his chest. But this was Kiska Ferdenova looking up at him with blue eyes, this was Kiska Ferdenova who was on his arm, snuggling into him. This was Kiska Ferdenova stretching upwards, her lips brushing against his skin as she spoke and nuzzled his neck lightly. Reflexively, his arm tightened around her, his body shifted under the sheet that was covering him. Of course, her body was also still wrapped in the fuzzy warm blanket she had brought, but suddenly, the warmth in the room had nothing to do with the fire crackly lightly in the corner and everything to do with the girl hugging his arm.

An electric shock wave roared through the young man as her lips grazed his skin, as she tucked herself into him again. His fingers lifted so the pad of his thumb was brushing away the wetness on her cheeks. He would take care of her, if it was the last thing he did. There was very little that mattered more than making sure Kiska Ferdenova was safe, happy and healthy - there was even fewer people that mattered more because simply put, she was the love of his life. Sure, there was Erik and Sammy - people he'd be close to, but without Kiss, what was he supposed to do with his life? It was a thought he didn't want to think about, something he never wanted to be faced with. Hadn't it been said that she was it for him, there was nothing else left? Fire curled in his stomach as desire came, desire to be everything in her life - as much as she was in his.

She was looking at him with such trust, such adoring eyes - he wasn't going to push her into anything that she didn't want tonight, but it was clear the way her blue orbs settled on his lips, there was something she wanted. They had shared kisses over the last few months, shared heated ones in the corridors in the dead of the night, in the lake where they had held each other close. Still, there was something different about this situation - was it that they were in a bed? Perhaps it was. Licking his lips, JR fought off the battle of wanting to kiss the girl - after all, she probably didn't want to be kissed right after crying, right? Yet, Kiss was looking at him in that adoring way, that trusting way and suddenly, he knew - she wanted to be kissed too.

He leaned in, meeting her halfway and suddenly, their lips were fused together like fire. JR's heart raced and his arms brought her closer to him, deepening the kiss. His fingers traced lines in her back through the blanket and his eyes closed, lost in the moment of perfection. No, there was no other place in the world he wanted to be, because having Kiska in his arms again was a dream come true.

[r] maybe sexy feelings ahead? idk

Apparently Kiska was not the only one thinking about kissing – a realization that made her feel a lot better about the fact that she had most definitely been leaning in towards him. As JR’s lips met hers, a rush spread through her, sending something fluttering against the walls of her stomach and chest. Were these real-life butterflies in her stomach she was feeling? They had to be, because the only times Kiss had ever felt anything remotely like it was when she was in this exact situation with this exact boy. He alone could press all of her buttons, buttons that the girl didn’t think had come equipped or were functional until these stolen moments with him occurred. And when that happened, JR pushed every last one. There was intensity in the kiss he met her with, in the way he held her closer, pressing her to him. She was again struck by the feeling of peace and safety that enveloped her and her arm came free from the blankets to slip around him, too, fingers coming in to contact with his bare skin and the hard muscle underneath. Abruptly, the desire to see and touch and kiss more of him crept in and so, too, did a hot flush in her cheeks as she broke away, taking in a breath to steady her nerves. She needed to catch her breath, too; he had stolen that right along with her heart.

But the lioness wasn’t quite ready to be done with this kissing business between them just yet. There was a lot of time to make up for that they could have spent doing this or just having time together in general. Adjusting her position to be a little more comfortable rather than tucked down in between him and the bed, Kiss studied his features once more, fingers tracing lightly over his cheek. Her attention drifted to his hair and its soft texture, running her fingers through it, too. She had always liked doing that, and he had always seemed to like it, too. Her breathing was back to normal, but her heart was still racing. “I have missed you,” she finally said, her voice softer than it had been when speaking just minutes ago. As much as this was a time to explain where she had gone, this was also a tender reunion between the two after months of absence and uncertainty as to whether moments like this would ever happen again. Having spent her entire life thus far writing off feeling this level of intimacy with anyone, she could start to understand how so many books were written about it. It was a wonderful feeling to have and to be able to share with someone. Biting her lip a little, Kiska leaned in to kiss him again as a way to convey how she was feeling. Actions spoke louder than words did anyhow, right?

Kissing was magical - or at least, it was magical when kissing the right person. A newfound energy filled the room. His heart raced as JR shifted on the bed, his entire focus on the girl whom was between him and the bed. His piercing green eyes roamed over her lightly, taking in her swollen lips as they sucked air between them. Her blue eyes watched him and JR felt as though he could fall into them - literally be surrounded by warmth and light with her embraced. His fingers moved to her shoulder, running down her arm lightly as her fingers traced his back and then his jaw. He leaned his cheek against her fingers and sighed softly, contently, feeling wonderful in this moment.

Nothing mattered other than the young woman who held his attention in this room. He would stay forever if he could; stay forever if there was a way to keep everything else out. His lips parted, sucking in a breath, his bare chest still rising and falling. There was no apprehension in this moment, no reservations. There was no fear of being rejected because Kiska had already accepted him a long time ago. JR wasn't worried about being judged; Kiss already knew there were glamour charms on his body and she hadn't cared either way. There was absolutely no reason to be worried. Instead, JR was confident, composed, drugged with an emotional high because the girl whom he had finally admitted to loving was here with him in this room.

Except, what were they? Best friends didn't seem to quite fit, but at the same time, they hadn't exactly been on a date. JR knew what he wanted and at this point in time, he was on such a confidence kick, he was sure he knew that Kiss wanted too. JR shifted on the softness of the sheets, his bare skin sliding down the cool sheets as he kissed her shoulder. "Kiss," he whispered, looking up to her, green eyes meeting blue. The words were lost as she leaned in to kiss him again and a whole new wave of warmth filled the young man all over again. Breaking away before he could forget, JR drew in a breath and released in slowly. His fingers curled into the ends of her blonde hair, giving her a smile, a row of white teeth shiny in the dim light of the room.

"We've been best friends so long, 'Nova." JR started again after another moment, curling the hair around his fingers, still watching her. "We're obviously more and I like this. I like this a lot. Can I call you my girlfriend even before I get to take you on the date I promised you before you left?" His eyes wandered her face and suddenly, the confidence was shattered; JR could suddenly felt a shiver run down his spine. Fear seeped in at the edges of his heart, gripping it in it's claws because this was new, this was scary. He wanted so much for her to say yes, but in this moment as the fire crackled and Kiss processed his words, it drove fear into him. He was holding his breath as he waited and all he could do was hope for the best.

Please say yes.

Everything felt wonderfully right in this moment – if it were daytime, the sun would be shining. If it were raining, the rain would stop and the clouds would part. If this were one of her books that she liked to read, this would lead them in on to their happy ending. With all of these thoughts swirling through her mind as warmth filled her veins, Kiska was a bit surprised when JR was first to break their kiss, pulling back to watch her as though something heavy weighed in on him. Was now perhaps not the time to be sharing a more intimate moment, and instead remain more matter of fact as they discussed her departure and the reasons for it? Was he not really satisfied with the answers that had been provided and needed more? Had she misread a signal of some kind? Given that they were both quite aware of the experienced the girl lacked, misreading him was certainly a possibility. Self-doubt was a loathsome thing and it was creeping in to the young woman’s consciousness now. It spread its fingers and took hold, even as the boy twirled strands of long blonde hair around and around his fingers. It was something that Kiss would very much do if she were feeling particularly nervous about something – was JR nervous in some capacity?

Before the young woman’s mind could continue to wander around aimlessly in circles between wondering why her companion may or may not be nervous and why he might have pulled away, the other Gryffindor was speaking again. She watched him as he spoke, the words that were coming out taking longer to process than they might have typically. That was largely due in part to the fact that she hadn’t ever expected to hear them – not when they were a little younger and the stirrings of a crush were beginning to be experienced and brushed aside, and certainly not after the long stretch of absent months. It had seemed almost certain that the two of them would never get to this point in time, yet here they were. And sure, they had exchanged heated moments and meaningful words beforehand, but that didn’t mean that JR couldn’t have found someone perhaps a little less flighty and better-matched to him. Someone who could be reliable, wouldn’t leave him high and dry, wouldn’t judge the scars he hid with charms, would be patient when he needed them to be. Was he sure he wanted her to be that person?

Apparently the self-doubt wasn’t done having its way with her.

Although reluctant to do so, given how comfortable the bed itself was coupled with JR’s presence being so close, Kiska sat up to be able to study him a little better without feeling lightheaded because of his proximity. She might have said yes to anything if they had continued with their kissing, a position with consequences that she didn’t want to dwell too intently on. Blue eyes, bright with something that could only be described as hope deep within them, met green once more, the green marked with an uncertainty that made the girl want to lean in to kiss it all away again until it was nothing but a distant memory. A smile slowly started to overtake her features as the lioness realized he had actually meant what he had said, that the words themselves weren’t going to be taken back. Once more, sun started shining in the deeper recesses of her mind and she wanted nothing more than to just bask in it. It had been put out, covered by gray cloudy days for so long with occasional crashes of thunder and flashes of lightning. But the clouds were finally, mercifully, beginning to part.

Realizing that he was probably hanging on her answer, Kiss blinked and gave a nod. The smile was still in place as she leaned forward once more, feeling almost giddy. These emotions were at the complete opposite end of the spectrum of what she had anticipated to feel this evening and it was an incredible feeling to be wrong in the positive, for once. “I like this a lot, too. I’m sorry that this and that and the other thing have taken time away from us, but I’d like that very much.” Closing the rest of the distance between them, Kiska kissed him again. She wanted to be wrapped up in more of that sunshine… and JR, too.

Most of life was trying to stay out of darkness - or at least, for JR it was. There were so many years where he was forced to literally live in the darkness - from being alone to sleeping in a basement with no lights. Piercing green eyes swept over the girl laying on the bed next to him. The blanket had fallen away from her shoulders this point - it didn't surprise JR, since it was warm in here and they had been occupied with other activities. For years, he had been running away from Kiska, been running away from this warmth and happiness. For what? Why? Why had he been so stupid? What had been so difficult about being wrapped in Kiss' arms, about having this?

Somewhere in the back of his mind, JR knew that it had been fear that had driven him away from Kiss and Liam - that his egg donor of a mother had edged the fear in so deep that he had been afraid she would hurt them, the way she had hurt his father, the way that she had hurt his older brother. But now, she was gone, there was no fear lingering that Kilsha could hurt anyone in his life. This caused there be freedom with his actions, because there was freedom in his heart. This moment, where Kiss was accepting the proposal that they were a couple? This moment needed to last forever.

Returning the kiss she offering him, his arms wrapped around her and pulled her on top of him. The feeling was back - the feelings of desire and want, starting to build within him. Arms wrapped around Kiss as he returned the kiss, the blanket covering them both. Still, there were warning signs going off in the back of his head and he shifted, pulling away, breaking the kiss as JR sucked in a breath, trying to steady his breathing. His chest heaved, the warm, gooey emotions filling him and JR struggled for control. He needed control in order to be able to do this right. The young man didn't want to scare her away two minutes after asking her to be his girlfriend. Fingers roamed her back as he took a moment to stare at the ceiling, counting to ten slowly as he worked to regain control.

Chancing a look back to her, he gave his friend - girlfriend, he reminded himself - a grin. Kissing her was intoxicating. It was amazing and perfect, but he needed to remind himself that she was in a darker place - her mother had just died. Unlike the freedom he felt when his own mother had passed, she was sure to be more upset. "Hey," he whispered, fingers running through her hair. "I'll stay with you. All night. As long as you need. I'm so glad you're home."

To be flatly honest, Kiska didn’t really take much notice when JR pulled her on top of him; she was still too busy kissing him to be aware of just about anything that didn’t include his lips. Her body settled along the length of his, vaguely aware of the lean mass under her; she knew he ran, often, in addition to playing Quidditch and his physique displayed the attention he paid to it. It wasn’t until the boy was the first to break their union that Kiss took notice of their positioning. She hadn’t actively thought of it again up until this point, but the first matter of business was that he was shirtless. Again. As usual. Like normally. It had the same effect on the lioness that it always did – the ability of her brain to form coherent thought immediately scattered while a flush tinged her cheeks and she sort of just stared at him. Even the Stop staring, you idiot! warning in somewhere in her head didn’t serve much purpose for a solid few minutes. Luckily, JR had also taken an opportunity to look away, hopefully to gather his own thoughts. Though more likely because her gaze might have made him uncomfortable.

Blinking as though coming out of a daze – which, in a way, was accurate – Kiss shifted a bit on him, trying to move her hands to where they weren’t touching his bare skin. That was quickly proven to be a fruitless effort and she finally just rested them in the bed on either side of his ribs, pushing her torso up a little. Was it suddenly incredibly warm in this room, or was it just her? And the blanket? And the fire?

Putting at least just a little space between them helped to lessen the heat to the girl’s cheeks, though it didn’t disappear entirely. He was saying something now and it took a second longer than it would have under normal circumstances to process. Home. The word helped to quiet the mess of thoughts that had all crowded in when JR had broken their kiss and instead focus on different paths of thinking. The dictionary probably had the definition of home listed something along the lines of ‘where one physically lives’ and that was it. It didn’t tend to include any of the thoughts or feelings that might be associated – or not associated – with those that shared the home and those that were outside of it. Kiska unquestionably and absolutely loved her mother, but most of her summers had felt like she was just sort of there for awhile before it was time to come back to Hogwarts. Only Demetri really shared the house with her, their mother spending a lot of time at work as she usually did with so many kids and then grandchildren.

Did that not, then, make Hogwarts feel more like a home than her actual one did? Especially when you considered that Liam and JR were here, and her other friends, too…? Well, if they hadn’t all been pushed away, but that was another thought for another time. She spent more time of a year here, felt more at ease and more herself, less like she was just biding time until it came around to September again.

Kiska’s eyes closed as his fingers ran through her hair, a feeling that she didn’t get to experience too often. Ordinarily it was done up in some fashion, not down and loose over her shoulders as it was now. Her head leaned a little into his hand and her eyes opened once more, a little bright with sentimentality. Home, for this girl, was more about the people than the place. She smiled again at JR, gaze wandering over his features as though they weren’t already memorized. “I’m glad I have you. It has been one heck of a rollercoaster, and you know I’m not a fan of heights.” That was an understatement, but the other Gryffindor knew that. Shifting a bit more, Kiss briefly pondered on how best to reposition herself. Sliding off of him and settling at his side again was probably the best option, as her arms were growing tired from holding herself up and the alternative of laying back down on his bare chest would only serve to make their conversation nonexistent. Moving carefully, lest any stray limbs end up in rather delicate places, the girl settled along his side once more. Probably more comfortable for them both this way, anyhow.

“Can you tell me anything about what has gone on while I was gone?” Her gaze had been fixed on the ceiling and turned back to him now, the blanket discarded alongside them. It was still at sweltering degrees in the room, whatever numerical value you wanted to assign to that. She was grateful she had gone light in her shorts and t-shirt, though his jeans probably weren’t doing him any favors. Even if they look nice. “Still working hard in classes? Still doing Quidditch even though it’s just a stick between your legs many feet from the ground?”

He regretted the words the moment they fell from his lips. Home was different for most people than it was for JR; home was not Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A sigh escaped his lips as she pulled away from him, as fear came alive within once more. He was suddenly aware of how hot the room felt, even though he had no shirt on. With the thought, the Room of Requirement seemed to start an internal fan for the room the fire distinguishing in a moment of a huff like the big bad wolf blowing a house down. JR shifted slightly on the bed, waiting for Kiska to lay into him, or worse, start crying all over again. He had screwed this one up and he couldn't blame her for being upset.

Except it never seemed to come; she looked at him with glassy eyes sure, but the way that Kiska looked at him - JR could only feel smoldering warmth and happiness that came along with the heat of the room they were in. He was thankful for the soft breeze against his skin, as sweat had started to form in the most uncomfortable spots when one was with the girl they were in love with. The lion haphazardly wiped his brow on the sheet that was clinging to him and his jeans were rather uncomfortable in certain places. He shifted his body, trying to be discrete about the situation as a whole but also delicate and JR wanted her to know he was paying full attention to her.

His eyes never strayed from the girl as he shifted to his side, pulling the sheet slightly over his waist, despite the heat. His body was starting to calm as the teen boy's breath started to return to his normal, his chest was still pumping blood to all parts of his body but despite the fear she'd be upset with him, it was red hot and sweltering. Somewhere towards the end of the bed he heard a noise. His eyes finally fell away from the doe's blue ones and landing on what should have been the form of his kitten - except his kitten was buried. Laughter suddenly ripped through his chest, despite the fear and the fire in his veins swirling around and freed his body from the constraints he felt strapped in.

After unburying the kitten and Chance jumped off the bed, JR looked back to Kiss once more, relief finding it's way through his heart and stomach as she settled down next to him. A smile came as lighthearted conversation began to start and JR tucked a pillow under his head, watching her with a smile as he propped himself on his elbow in order to be able to see her better. "Roller coasters are fun," he teased, his tone lighthearted. "But it's the Ferris Wheels that are amazing - let you see for miles, just the way being in the sky above the treelines on a broom does. You have to watch the sunset with me sometime like that."

His smile was bright - easy, kind, loving. In the back of his mind, JR was consious that it wouldn't always be this easy for Kiss to rebound from tears and he hoped there would be many more nights she demanded his attention by reaching out by owl - or just crawling in his bed as she had in years past, when they were just kids. The lion would be sure show with his actions as well with his words that he wanted to be her support system, it was only a matter if Kiska would let him be.

"Classes are pretty much the same," he responded, although the smile seemed to fade from his lips slightly and his eyes, as he considered telling her what was happening in his life. What was happening in his life. JR blew out a soft breath as it all started to flood back to him; as if seeing Kiska had stopped time from continuing on, stopped all the events of life happening. What could he tell her? That Sammy was now a ghost? That he and Liam weren't really friends anymore? What was something good something they might be able to talk about without any more hurt than already filled them? "Erik got me this really amazing book for Christmas on wandless magic and I might finally be able to cast something..." Another laugh bubbled up as he whispered a cooling charm incantation.

...And nothing happened. "Or not," he grinned at the pretty girl in the bed with him, winking. "But yeah, Quidditch is coming up again soon. You'll be my number one fan, right?"

It was easy to settle in next to him now, now that the conversation was turning to more normal topics that the two could share. They weren’t emotionally charged either positively or negatively; they were just facts, statements of events that had transpired while the girl had been absent. The step back in to feeling like it was old times again – before the events in their worlds had served to both tear them apart and make them grow up – made Kiska's chest feel lighter and more tension that she had been feeling started to ease from her shoulders. Of course, it was also serving to make her feel tired. One could only endure so much self-inflicted emotional pressure before it really bogged them down and resulted in exhaustion. As Kiss lay there next to JR, it was exhaustion that settled in her bones now. The hard part was done with, to an extent. This romantic relationship business was going to be trickier but there wasn’t another person that she would have wanted to conduct this business with.

The flush that had been present in her face had subsided and, with it, so too had the sweltering feeling. It helped that the fire had been put out by either the room or JR – perhaps he had experienced the same flushed state that she had. Her hand grasped around for the blanket that had been discarded just minutes before, settling it over herself before her fingers played with the familiar frayed thread on the one corner. She had charmed it so that nothing would unravel or be damaged… hopefully. Her charms’ work still needed a bit of attention.

Looking back to her companion, Kiss gave a smile as he talked before her expression switched over to more of a grimace. She had been joking about Quidditch and naturally JR was not. The draw of flying just thoroughly eluded the lioness; it was a stick with more thin sticks attached to one end and it was supposed to keep you from plummeting to your death or a lot of broken bones, at the very least. Why anyone would voluntarily participate in such a thing was beyond her grasp of reasoning. What if you borrowed a broom that was older or that you weren’t used to and you meant to go left and it shot you right off sideways and down you went and then plop? Perhaps she was being a bit dramatic in her line of thinking on the subject, but also maybe she wasn’t. It could happen. Crazy things were pretty good at happening in the wizarding world. Once you threw magic at something, look out.

“Of course I’ll be your number one fan, cheering you on while simultaneously pretty sure you could die at any moment.” A soft laugh slipped out in spite of the complex thoughts on the subject, a smile tugging at the corners of Kiska’s mouth. He was a good player, there was no doubt of that. It wasn’t a question of his skill so much as the usual worry that crept in whenever she watched someone she cared for out flying around on the Pitch. She didn’t want to dwell too much longer on that, as Quidditch season would soon be upon them and there would be plenty of time to worry about it then, so she latched on to the other bits of information he had brought up. “How long have you been looking in to wandless magic? Is there any particular reason you want to be able to use it?” Now that was something a little more interesting and less worrisome that they could talk about.

Until her eyes closed, anyways; the girl’s eyelids were beginning to feel heavy. For the first time in too long, everything felt okay. Not great, but not bad. Okay.

JR couldn't remember exactly what had led him to wanting to learn about wandless magic. Had it been when he had met Erik in the dark corridor and sent a warming charm his way - no, because JR had pulled out his wand for that. There was the Hufflepuff he met who was practicing it for herself once when he was in the communal common room. Yes, that must've been when the idea first crossed his mind. Perusing it had started to come through reading different Charms books of course - it had taken JR months to even try the techniques that came with performing the magic without a wand.

He had spent a lot of time ordering books and reading them. The money his father left him had finally been given to him fully when he turned seventeen - even though all of his school expenses had been paid until then, now it was nice to be able to buy extra books or different things that he wanted. Yet, JR was conscious of how much money he spent and how when the end of this year came, he would be graduating. It seemed far away, but at the same time, JR needed to keep this in mind as well because he would need a job and a place to stay and whatever else. The Leaky Cauldron would only be acceptable for so long.

However, this worry was not for this night. Tonight was to hold Kiss and talk to her - to feel warm and fuzzy, to feel as though he would be her knight in shining armor forever. While his stance on the outside was that JR was a stern, mature young man who could keep his stuff together at all times, JR was actually a warm teddy bear for Kiska - she was more important than pretty much anything in the world. His piercing green eyes never left her as his fingers brushed hair from her face once more, her smile and eyes drawing him in, made him feel as though the lion was in a bubble full of love. Leaning forward, his lips brushed her forehead, still smiling. "I know it worries you; I will be careful." His voice was quiet, hopefully soothing his friend - girlfriend.

Settling back again, he shrugged. "I saw a girl trying to get it to work one day and I just... I like to help people, you know? Warming charms, being able to cast lumos without a wand, a cooling charm, whatever. Small things. Just to be able to help people without drawing attention to myself?" Attention was not something the lion wanted or needed. JR had never been one to enjoy the spotlight; especially since his Kilsha had come crashing into his life the summer after fourth year. "I dunno. Charms is easy for me, too. This gives me a little bit of a challenge, you know?"

This was perfect. Lighthearted and nice, warmth and love surrounding the two teenagers that lay in the bed together. His arm pushed it's way under the girl beside him as they lay together and brought her body closer to him. The smell of her shampoo was intoxicating, but now was not the time for those thoughts. Kiska looked absolutely exhausted as she did beautiful and JR couldn't blame her. His fingers pressed lightly into her back, automatically remembering exactly where the points of stress gathered in her muscles, slowly coaxing out the spasms. Silence fell over them, but JR didn't mind. He was exactly where he wanted to be as his eyes closed, thinking that perhaps, with Kiska by his side again, there would be no nightmares. "Sleep, 'Nova" he whispered softly, hoping to soothe any of her worries she might've had about falling asleep as he held her.
